Like a hammer right? A hammer is a weapon too? And a broom handle? And a sickle? All weapons right? You demonstrated another annoying misconception. You are confusing two definitions of weapons - weapons conextually, as in "this icecicle is the murder weapon" - and weapons as objects, as in "A longsword is a weapon". In the first definition, knives are weapons, but then, everything is a weapon, including a brick, branch, keys, pillow etc. In the second definition, knives are like hammers, they are tools, which are better than most tools as weapons according to the first definition. But so are showels... So yeah.

With batoning, I think people initially think that it's the beating action that's hard on the knife. Hitting the blade's spine with a wood baton isn't that damaging to the knife, except perhaps to the pivot of a folder. The damaging stresses are in how the grain of the wood can impart serious twisting and shearing forces to the blade. You can baton hard on a thin-ish knife blade to crosscut wood grain with little risk of cracking the blade. . Drive that same blade to rip along the grain in oak, and see how a thin blade can really sharply distort as it approaches a knot in oak. That's the thing that cracks a good blade.

I don't think a survival knife needs to be stainless. You mentioned convex grinds being among the first knives. Well carbon steel knives were used successfully for hundreds of years, and are still adequate choices. I still prefer 5160 for my survival knife. But yes, the batoning stigma gets old. To think a high carbon spring steel or other modern steel is going to be damaged hammering it through wood with wood is absurd. I won't say a little knife can't do a big knife job, but I will say a big knife is better at doing small knife jobs than a small knife is at doing big knife jobs. If you've ever tried to field dress an elk with a Leatherman, you know this. Stainless steel is called stainless steel because it "stains less," not because it doesn't stain at all. Never heard the "knife people are serious," and if I did, I think I would bitch slap the person. I just had a flashback to "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels," "We need knives, big fuck off shiny ones..." kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJadjKubq9LMZ2g.html

With the improvement of certain folding knives' locks, if you want to carry a knife with less than a six inch blade you should carry a lightweight folder. A large belt knife with a lightweight folder and a multi tool will do everything you would need to do in the woods.

here in Yakutia where i live, we have our national knive called "Yakut knife", and they're always have a stiffebing rib on the blade, and ones who don't know (and there's a 95% of people who don't know) ALWAYS say that it's actually a groove to flow blood from victim or prey. And an animal should die from bleeding if you stab it and leave your knife. Man it's so stupid to hear, and they so convinced in this. I actually don't know how 95% of people don't know why smiths use stiffening ribs, but they KNOW for sure that it's a freaking bleeding groove. In russia this problem is exists too.

It should be called rust ressistant. Not stainless. There are diff types of stainless. You have rust resistant that is resistant to rust but will rust if u leave it in ex salt water or in regular water. Elmax is a stainless steel but it rusts after a while. Then u have acidproof steel. A4 and so on. This steel is used for maritime use. Screws and bolts is usualy made of these. Then u have the semisteel. It have some kind of rustressistance but yes. Alla steel rust. With time and missuse . :) so the term stainless is a false term but a knife that say stainless on will have a hard time to rust. :)

This is why I love the Mora Garberg. Best of both worlds. Small knife with heavy steel for bigger jobs.

Great video guys. I just got my Kitayama 8k in today. I love it! So nice. Puts a awesome mirror on. I sharpened a new damascus chef knife with aus10 which isn't the greatest but kind of like vg10 and I got it so sharp I couldn't even split hairs it would just tree top cut it lol. Unreal that I can get it that sharp and I'm getting better each time. Thanks to Maartens sharpening videos too! I do it just how you do it or try at least. Easier than sharpening the knife with the point coming towards you how I used to do it and could never see what angle I was holding it and would mess up. Anyways thanks and look forward to the next video adventure!
