Thank you for this. This was a completely fair assessment of DVC's (and Disney in general) failure to provide competent websites to run their products. It's ridiculous. In this day and age there is no excuse for it. I think what bothers me the most is that Disney just keeps pushing everything digital, requiring everything to be managed online and yet have systems that simply do not work. I don't remember exactly which show it was - maybe one of the Tuesday ones - when the suggestion was made to have Disney executives sit down and plan a Disney vacation online with no help from anyone. Have them reserve a room or DVC villa, make park reservations and ADR's. Make them get up at 7 AM every day for a week and try to book Genie + and ILL reservations. Only let them in CS restaurants if they can successfully mobile order. No one would help them. Make them work the system on their own. Maybe then they will understand how difficult coming to Disney has become.

Yes !!! I have a vision impairment and all of this dependence on smart phones with the inaccessible app has made it impossible for me to do hardly anything by myself . I totally get it that those of us who use screen readers are a minority but c’mon you can hire someone to fix the app 😐 I would love for all of the execs to have to use a screen reader with the screen curtain on .

Unfortunately the executives aren't going to do that and as long as people come to the parks and spend their money, there is no incentive to change anything from which they benefit financially, regardless of how the masses feel about it. They. Don't. Care.

That was originally why I bought DVC. After 10 years we no longer are DVC members the amount of points over the last 4 years to get into anything has just skyrocketed and the 150 points we bought because we could afford it back in 2012 just didn't go anywhere near as far as it used to and when we did try to book anything, everything was already full.

I work in IT as a project manager/business analyst and IT is overhead. Period. And we know how Disney likes to be able to make money so I can see how they’d not want to invest in IT. Plus lack of staffing (our company is hurting for good staff, too). But perception is reality when you’re talking about customer experience and this seems to be starting to catch up to them. When enough people are speaking up it’ll make a difference. So hopefully things will change for the better.

We were AP holders for years and were pondering DVC. Then Covid hit. Not only did we thank God we didn't tie ourselves up in DVC, but we opted out of the APs because of all the lower experiences, less shows, price increases and more hassle with reservations and fast passes going away. We were DONE!

Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen Pete that pissed off before. I do find this to be one of my pet peeves with Disney lately, an unwillingness to go the extra step to secure my repeated visits. I have ranted on this page before, but let me be clear that I love Disney. It is a place that can still be magical in these troubled times and that’s what people are counting on. To be able to have that escape from reality. Now we still have 21 years left on our original contract with DVC. That’s a lot of potential visits, considering that we’re over 30 in the first 19 years. They’re not adding to their bottom line by upsetting the loyal customers. The ones that book a vacation and decide to add to it while there. The ones that visit the restaurants, even though there’s a full kitchen in the room. The ones that spend the extra money for annual passes to make multiple trips in one year. The ones that will continue to visit hoping you hear us and change. If you can’t keep that crowd happy, maybe you should just close your doors. After all, we may be complaining a lot lately, but it’s only because we have a right to be upset with what is going on (or in some cases not going on). I agree with Pete, with amount of profit this company has…no excuse for having a poorly designed and functioning website.

Coming from IT, my guess is that Disney refuses to pour adequate money into their backend infrastructure to run these websites. They probably instruct their IT teams to perform bare minimum work to maintain their servers and the software running them because they probably don't see it as a big enough issue. We must not be complaining loudly or frequently enough. I will say though, whatever group made the Disney+ app and website were geniuses. Never have any issues with that service. It looks great too. They need to get that team to redesign the websites for the Parks, DCL, and DVC.

I have been prescribed blood pressure medication just based on the borrowing glitch from DVC. I bought 2 contracts resale and I ALWAYS get that horrid 7 dwarves “page is down” when I try to book a room by borrowing points. By the the time I get through to someone after ONE HOUR ON HOLD, the room I need is gone. That’s IF it’s not later in the evening when the phone lines are closed. Also, am I the only person who submitted room requests TWICE with MS yet when I arrive at the resort, they say there are none on file? GIVE ME THE DAM CREDENTIALS TO DO THE BOOKING MYSELF INSTEAD OF MEMBER SERVICES AND YOU DONT NEED TO PAY ME DISNEY. Do you really need to get a supervisor to borrow points EVERYTIME I CALL. What the hell is going on over there?! I need my medication.

Disney finally migrated from Windows 95 in 2017 I think it was. Coming from an IT background, when a user insists on utilizing a phased out version, they have to pay a third party for support. And that's typically very expensive. Disney was too cheap to upgrade their hardware: PCs, cash registers (yes they were running 95 also). It's extraordinarily poor business practice. And to say it's a rarity to use a 20 year old OS, is an understatement. What version they are on now - I have no idea.

Unfortunately, I see very little incentive for Disney to do anything about issues with DVC. As members, you have signed a contract which obligates you to pay them regardless of their level of customer service. The only way out of it is to sell it to someone else, which does not hurt Disney, so again no incentive. Maybe a class action suit could do something, but Disney would need to be violating the contract for that to be fruitful. Hopefully bad PR could be enough to motivate them to do something about it.

Years ago I was in a tech class on Agile and the trainer was bragging how his company had helped Disney implement Agile methodology. Anyone in any complicated IT environment will also be rolling their eyes and groaning at this comment. It works great for small isolated IT groups/projects, but personally it’s caused me no end of grief in a very large multi tiered environment. I suspect Disney is suffering from the same issues (and needs to regression test better. 😂)

I've been in IT for a really long time...Agile works if done properly....that said I've never seen it done properly. 1-2 changes, validate that they work properly before you change anything else. Instead it turns into ok, we'll change 30 things really fast and hope for the best - now we're AGILE! Nope. As is the case with all processes in IT it gets bastardized to make it fit into someone non-IT's idea of what it should be.

I used to work for HGVC a decade ago and honestly have no idea how this could happen without anyone realizing it that long. Pretty huge eye opener about how bad their systems are - what I used was bad but wouldn’t have been able to do this. Inventory doesn’t work that way. Also - what rooms did marketing end up retaining for those dates? I’m sure they kept their normal allotment. 20:00 they transferred hotel inventory to you to use as DVC inventory. It’s rare but can be done at the hotel’s discretion only, not DVC. The inventory belongs to different owners, essentially. As a timeshare agent booking timeshare inventory it’s something I wouldn’t be able to offer or sometimes see depending on the system. These workers were at the front desk and worked for the hotel, or at least had access to release hotel inventory.

I’m just amazed at the hassle DVC can be. I don’t understand how people pay 10s of thousands of dollars to deal with spending hours on the phone a year in advance just to plan a vacation to Disney, not to mention the frustration of dealing with Genie and the rides when you get the parks. If this was my vacation , I would look forward to going back to work!

I was very unhappy with how Disney handled things during the Pandemic. I had banked 2019’s points because the plan was to book a a big cruise early in 2020. We planned to use 2019, 2020 points and 2021 points. Never got any notification at any time either by snail mail or email that they were going to begin limiting borrowed points to 50%. So the pandemic happened and obviously I couldnt book a cruise an I had banked points that were going to expire. I made multiple calls to find out if DVC would allow the points to roll a year. Not only could I not book a cruise but I have a compromised immune system so I wasnt going to be booking any travel especially at a theme park. No one ever had an answer. They kept telling to wait until later in the year to see if they had made any decisions. I resigned myself to the fact that I was going to lose the points. As it worked out, they did end up rolling over the points automatically but never communicated that to the people answering the phones in Member Services.

Not making any decision was the worse thing they could have one. Not communicating at all was the second worse.

There is also certainly issues with companies not willing to spend money when they have a captive consumer base. I mean, what other options do DVC owners have. They only have one place they can go to book their DVC reservations. This isn't like a hotel where they can just go and book at another hotel chain. They have to use the DVC website. We were supposed to cruise in Dec 2021 but ha an issue with immunizations. I had booked using my DVC points. So I spent hours on hold trying to find out if I was going to be able to change dates while sitting in our hotel room. Member Services was wonderful. First phone call was me waiting while they worked out with the cruise line if we could change our date. She did all the work an I listened o Disney music. Second call wasnt so great. I waited on hold for over an hour an then they hung up on me. I did call near the end of the day but imo if you are in the call queue they should answer your call. That’s just a matter of scheduling people a hour beyond their normal advertised hours. It did make me angry because I had to rebook the cruise by that day and I was concerned they wouldnt allow me to rebook but when I called back th next day and she asked I explained I had called and got hung up on so they honored the rebooking. When we did finally rebook, it took well over an hour to find staterooms on a sailing that met my needs ( 2 staterooms near each other for a different cruise on one of 2 sailing dates at the right price [had to pay for some because it was a pricier cruise])). She did all the work with the cruise line and just checked with me for price and stateroom class/location. The Member Services Reps were always polite and helpful as they always are.

IT departments are almost always a dotted line when it comes to administrative accountability. Tech teams in many large companies are so disconnected from the users/operators that all suffer as a result. It poses an almost philosophical question when it comes to org structure: Is it better to have a centralized IT team that has a sub-optimal cookie cutter platform that all umbrella orgs can use OR is it better to have multiple customized or specialized niche systems that perform well on their own but may struggle to interact with each other?

Pete, you hit the nail on the head when you accurately stated that not everyone is an internet-stalking psycho. You'd be amazed how many people I've met, who have purchased a very expensive DVC membership, who have absolutely no idea "how many beans make five" and are totally clueless regarding their membership. Some of them can't even tell you the name of their resort. They can only tell you that they're staying at "the DVC Club!" wherever that is??? Then, when the Company starts to have glitches, the clientele is ill-equipped to know how to work around the issues since, in my humble opinion, they bought the product but did not understand what that entailed. It's not a fire-and-forget missile; you need to understand the whole package, what it entails and No! it isn't a baby-sitting service, the onus is on you to understand the entire DVC offering and what you will need to know and do to navigate the package. In some cases, tongue-in-cheek, some people have more money than sense. They don't understand that a DVC membership requires that you have to assess your "position", your liabilities and what effort-level you will be required to perform to manage your DVC membership on an annual basis. The membership doesn't self-manage and I think a lot of people miss that.

I purchased a new DVC Annual pass in the brief interval they were available this fall after my previous annual pass expired. I have two trips planned for this spring. We are staying at DVC properties for the trip. I have a trip in two weeks that was supposed to piggyback a CME trip onto a short Disney trip. The CME course was cancelled, probably due to Covid concerns. I was able to book the weekend days at a non Disney good neighbor hotel, because there was no available DVC rooms, because of the princess marathon. I was unable to book park reservations for both days I was staying at the good neighbors hotel. I thought I should be able to make a park reservation even if not staying at a DVC resort. But, I don’t want to call and be on hold. I am a physician, and while at work, I am seeing patients. I use my personal phone at work for sending prescriptions. Availability is such a problem. We bought 300 points for Boulder Ridge years ago for big family trips around the holidays. 11 months out.... booked solid. The entire season. Nothing. Tried calling. No help. What good is the home resort when it’s worthless

This booking glitch is minor compared to the daily crashing of Disney websites. Yes daily. They websites work less than they do. I don’t understand how a Fortune 500 company can have such bat IT. It is just awful.

I live 20 mins from DL and go to VGC for staycations often. This hotel is just garbage these day. The rooms need soooo much refurbishment. I’m not a snob, but if I was paying rack rates like lots of others I’d be really unhappy. My friends room last week had water pooling on the bathroom over the sink ledge. They realized it was dripping from the sconces. I mean WTF Disney? The manager gave her points back and gave them $400 in comps. So our dues are going towards their poorly maintained rooms. I’m,renting out GC more than staying there next year.

A part of the blame is actually on Amazon. AWS did have some recent outages which affected several Disney back end systems including the website, bookings, transportation, etc. Truthfully Disney really need to fix their sites tbh.

Yeah, you’re right in some regards, but this decline started at the software development and maintenance phase. Overall, Disney doesn’t want to build right at the get-go. Just. Sad.

I was a DVC member services call center cast member so feel free to pick my brain BUT 1. DVC would literally pull us into a room the same morning a promotion or something major was happening, give a quick 10-15 minute run-down, and then send us to the phones. 2. "Supervisors" are a whole segment of people who used to be regular advisors, they have the same information as any regular advisor, and the only difference is that they are able to hold and override inventory that's shown inaccurately. 3. To check if information from the hotels is imputed properly, the advisor has to call the hotel desk to verify and only if the hotel says there is unshown availability then a supervisor can override the system. 4. Same-day inventory is never accurate. The only way for an advisor to find out what's actually open is if they call the hotel directly and ask but they are NOT allowed to do that. They can only call to verify if the hotel is showing a same-day opening.

We have been DVC members for 25 years. Every year our dues have inched up. This year our monthly dues jumped from $120/month to $144/month with no explanation. It feels like a money grabbing tactic! Are other DVC members upset about this?

My partner and I have not invested in DVC for a lot of reasons. We watch DVC Fan occasionally. Thank you for confirming our informed decision to rent points and not own points. "Saying something" will not work as long as Disney is selling new memberships. No American corporation fixes a customer issue as long as their customer accepts their irresponsible and disrespectful customer service experience. Disney has found, with the support of its most rabid "guests" (DVC "guests" being at the top of Disney's revenue food chain), that price increases on everything year after year (with the exception of the "pandemic years") is met with more demand and better quarterly calls for their executives and stockholders. It's going to get worse. Chapek is in charge and he's proven that the only "guest" who has value is the board, the stockholders, and his compensation. Expect to be disappointed ss long as all of you coalesce to Disney's insipid policies and poorly designed digital "guest" experience. We'd be very remorseful had we invested $40,000 in a real estate investment scheme. Best of luck to all. We hope things change for the better at Disney. BTW ... we rented points last October to stay at The Grand Californian this September. PSYCHED!

Cheaper to rent a condo within walking distance of Disneyland, and now my timeshare with II trades into DVC-why on earth would I spend thousands and thousands for DVC? SSR available mid august through september right now if had any desire to go back to Disney(more $ for less experiences-nope). Would rather spend my money on 2 weeks in Hawaii this summer. And don't get me started on HORRIBLE Disneyland paris-STILL don't hav emoney back from cancelled trip from May 2020!! NUMEROUS communications, have sent what they need THREE separate times and still nothing

I give up on DVC. In 2021 I saw all these great deals on DVC rental at a Disney hotel but every one of them 7-10 would come back, “Sorry this deal is not available.” If they’re not available why advertise and make it possible to make the reservation? I dunno.

This is one of the reasons WHY I don't understand why DVC owners think DVC is that much better of a timeshare to buy over Wyndham and Marriott. They've all got their good and bad. Personally, I'd rather deal with the scumbag salesmen and marketing ploys at Wyndham and Marriott than a crappy website. Marriott and Wyndham don't have these kinds of website issues and they're just as easy to buy resale as DVC.

ALL! of Disney’s Apps, software and websites SUCK (per your words), Pete. Note that the decline continues exponentially since they fired the stateside team and contracted the work overseas. Contract work only develops what is in the contract. They don’t’plus’ it, they don’t create for the guest experience, they push out ‘new’ for revenue generation only. They don’t carePERIOD!

This just adds to the VERY REAL and VALID comment that is: DISNEY DOESN'T CARE!!!!! It's all about $$$$$ and nothing else. People who have been loyal Disney supporters (like me) KNOW what is horribly wrong and missing. Any new family/person coming to Disney doesn't know what to expect or miss. They just don't know any better and THAT is the demographic Disney is hoping for.

I think its awful as a long time Disney stock holder and DVC and annual pass holder .. we have been coming to Disney since my parents went there in 1974 on their honeymoon.. we are stock holders and annual pas holders up until Covid hit .. we surrendered our annual passes because of uncertainty and park closing for Covid .. my dad has a health issue and can’t be vaccinated yet . We were scheduled to go to Disney before Covid hit and parks closed .. we never would have surrendered our passes of Disney had told us we couldn’t renew !!! We are scheduled to go in August , Sept and November!! And having an annual pass back would be a lot more beneficial to us than regular park passes .. Disney can easily check our history of trips over 40 years and our annual pass history!!! It’s unfair !! Especially in light of my dads medical condition.. can Dis Uplugged help !! I know someone that went to Disney springs with similar issue and was able to get a Incredapass renewal after making a scene !!! Come on Disney I know you can do better !!! Especially considering the circumstances

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for any meaningful change under the current leadership. Chapek cares nothing about the guest experience and the stockholders are not likely to vote him out because he makes their bank accounts grow. By the time the current bubble of obscene Disney profits bursts, permanent damage will have been done throughout Disney sphere that may irrevocably damage the brand. This is just another reason I don't believe in ghosts because if Walt could see what has been done to his legacy, he would have surely stopped this downward spiral with Eisner and would have never allowed Iger or Chapek to get anywhere close to the head office.

Remember a few years back when Disney fired all their IT staff, replacing them mostly with Indian IT workers? To add further insult, they forced the then existing workforce to train their replacements in order to get a "severance". THIS is a DIRECT result of that attempt to lower their cost-point for their IT "Human Capital". While it is the result, it is definitely not the cause. I have worked in IT for 35+ years, on many large gov contracts, including ObamaCare, where we saw the same type of issues occur with the workforce. As long as there is a way to further maximize profits, CEOs and the leadership of publicly traded companies are basically forced to take these measures, otherwise the "NYSE Profits" do not continually increase under their reign, and they are deemed a failure and replaced. So while the website is definitely the problem to the issues you have identified here, it is just one very visible downstream symptom of many much larger issues further upstream. The mentality of these profit-based leaders is one of widgets. They see every worker-bee position as a widget. At their level, they just know that they need "x" number of widgets to staff a ride, or run a restaurant within the park, or service a hotel. They are disconnected from the physical interaction with said widgets, some of which have incredible personalities that make our vacations "Magical", while others are detail oriented and would be better placed in a planning role; you get the idea. The corporate Generals of this greed model will ultimately destroy the Disney that we all know and love.
