I think "live service" makes sense, because when the producers pull the plug, it becomes a "dead service".

My live service journey with World of Tanks is a decent example of just how well the industry "progressed". I started playing this F2P vehicle combat game in 2016, and I was almost instantly won over by the satisfying core gameplay loop, and the great atmosphere of two large teams battling it out with WW2 and early Cold War armored vehicles. Monetization mainly consisted of premium vehicles that earn more ingame currency and XP. Some of these were a little too good, but nothing too extreme. That's until the Skorpion G premium tank destroyer arrived in late 2016, with it' s cool loking but nonhistorical paint - and worse: insanely good stats that instantly made it the best TD, and overall one of the top vehicles of it's tier, and therefore quickly became the most played vehicle in the entire game. I still remember the general confusion among the community, "what were they thinking ?", and "obviously they have to do something about this". A few months later the "Defender" premium heavy tank arrived, and it's insanely tough armor combined with a high damage cannon and good mobility began dominating the lobbies. It was straight up powercreep from here on in, more and more of this crap arrived into the game, more and more frequently. More armor, more firepower, more mobility, introduction of clown camos because Fortnite became a thing, battlepasses, insanely OP reward tanks for clan wars players, wheeled vehicles running around at 100 km/h thus completely breaking the maps... The lower tiers are not as affected(as of now), maybe intentionally so new players are not immediately faced with the fact that at the upper levels the game is freemium, and indeed there's still some fun to be had here, reminiscent of the good old days. But overall, I have no idea how the hell is this game still up and running. Guess those whales really love playing...and paying.

By 2016 WoT was already an absolute disaster. I have no idea how you think the monetization was fair. Premium tanks, gold spam and seal clubbing were killing the game and making Tiers I - V and IX - X absolutely miserable. Now in 2024 things are x1000 worse.
@Mitchell_Gant
@Mitchell_Gant 4 ай бұрын
@@johnhighway7399 Having to play gold for garage slots was certainly stupid and contraproductive, and the high tier premiums were too expensive for sure. But they were hardly unbeatable or mandatory, unless you wanted to play nothing but high tiers. The occasional gold spamming "pro" and seal clubber were always a thing, but nowhere near to the game ruining extent. Other than tier 10, which was always a bit autistic, and tier 1 with it's laughable starting tanks, I enjoyed playing most of the vehicles until the current state of the game started to set in.

Have you heard that Ross Scott of Accursed Farms has started a campaign against companies killing games? The Crew was shut down recently so there is no way to play it anymore. Hopefully this makes countries in the EU pass some law which requires all games to have an offline mode, I'm not sure if it passes in America.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 4 ай бұрын
I saw that. If consumer protections like that get passed in the EU, then even if they don't get passed in the US, there's a very good chance that policies created by EU legislation will be applied to all versions of the game regardless. Sort of like how even North American websites will give the options for selecting which cookies to allow even though they're not technically obligated to under US law. We'll see, though. Hopefully that campaign is successful and we get proper games preservation really rolling.

I don't necessarily think the practice is going to change any time soon because when Baldur's Gate 3 released, which kind of went back to the gaming roots of old (singleplayer, long, immersive and quality over quantity) there was kind of a huge backlash on or about it, how the industry replied that it's not going to become any new standard, so considering that, the reluctance of the industry to change and coupled with the almost unlimited pool of money from which developers can draw from over time through products that are like live service games and have "free to play" models attached to them, things are looking kind of bleak. The whole industry changed from what it once was beginning and through the 2000's and perhaps like with other things in life, the monetization aspect has surely left an impact on gaming as a whole. A lot of games that were made in those times were and remain memorable also witnessed in the fact of how often they are always replicated but never duplicated and how the industry keeps spiraling like a snake, eating its own tale. A tale of ages.

Obviously community-run servers and a server browser will keep a game running as long as the protocols still function. It's no accident that most modern multiplayer games only allow matchmaking through the developer/publisher's official servers. My main problem with games as old as CS 1.6, specifically, is that you can't really get the vanilla experience anymore. The only servers still left with populations are heavily modded.

@@DWTerminatorI haven't played in a few years, but last time I played 1.6, and Day of Defeat it was vanilla besides maybe the quake announcer. We saw this happen though with Battlefield Bad Company 2. EA shut down the game and de-listed it from their store and now you need to mod the game in order to play it. We've also seen cease and desist orders on groups who mod these games to be playable. The current market encourages devs to not have community servers and to attack anyone who tries to get these games back up and running. If you're playing an old game, you're not being funneled into their live service casino slop. I'm frankly shocked that Xlink Kai and that project restoring Xbox Live on the OG Xbox haven't been hit yet.

Fallout 4 & Skyrim aren't live service games. Mod support is pretty much the exact *opposite* of live service principles.

I never feel entirely happy or relaxed playing live service games, they always feel tainted to me , and never like the Dev even if i enjoy the game , after wasting hundreds of pounds on hearthstone I figured out i just liked buying the packs , the money you spend never ends, cause your cards becomes useless after a bit , it was very expensive to keep up, so I quit

If you just like buying card packs, you might as well pick up an actual CCG. At least then you have physical items that you can sell later, if you wish.

I think live service is stupid. Back then we just have one complete game and we play rather than having to pay more more more more

Live service games are hampering traditional game development! I do get why so many devs are chasing the next fortnite tho. Why spend 10 years making 2 or 3 traditional games, wen u can release a bare bones, half finished, half assed live service game, then improve it for the next 10 years. But the thought of playing the same game for 10 years, turns me right off!! I dont buy or play live service games at all!

You are likely trying to appeal to _the algorithm_, but, i feel like these videos would be cooler around the 5min mark

@@DWTerminator You make great content, but - are you _sure_ you're not trying to appease the algorithm? cause, i read that 20min vids are the "sweet spot". If it is purely incidental, then i stand corrected and apologize. Either way, i love ur vid essays. i've grown fond of them over the years

My videos just end up being however long it takes me to talk about whatever I want to talk about. Sometimes they're short, sometimes they're more around the 20-30 minute mark, and sometimes they're well over an hour or two long. I don't even think Google knows how the algorithm works at this point, let alone everyone else.
