Amid Evil's great, but its main inspiration is Heretic, so it's firmly in the "standard" retro-style FPS category. Games inspired by HeXen, on the other hand, are a *very* rare breed.

Not at all. More a mix of all the awesome retro shooter RPG games.

i hoped this game would improve upon hexen. i wished for more weapons per class, less repetitive combat, actual puzzles instead of switch hunts, keep the mystery of being told little, same dark atmosphere,. etc. i wanted a true spiritual successor to it. though honestly, the writing was on the wall since the early access, and it had an identity crisis even then. for me the first bad sign was the intro sequence where you were locked in a half life esque monorail, instead of being instantly flung into the fray like in ion maiden. but when i completely lost hope for it, again in the early access, was you had a quest to light a lighttower i think, and the game has the icon of what spell to use where you had to use it, instead of trusting you to figure it out for yourself. it could have been a simple puzzle to ease you into what's in store. oh, and there are no classes. it barely resembled hexen, and it still barely does. and it's a shame too, because hexen is really underrated and often lumped together with heretic like they are the same game, ironically, given it's subtitle of "beyond heretic"

@@Linzmaus Nice, I thought they would be a good gateway for neglected devs but after them canceling deus ex after purchasing eidos, they can go suck a fat one for all I care.

But it can be excused for those games, because of the technology limitations they had back then. And even then, stuff like Doom or Quake 1 is still fun to play, even with their quirks. Graven doesn't have that excuse.

Graven is *definitely* worse than its inspirations. How many of those can you say will lock you out of finishing the game because of glitches that go back months, if not years? I mean hell, HeXen is certainly confusing and tedious at times, but at least it has an automap and combat that isn't terrible.

@@DWTerminator I have memories of glitches where the only way out is a reload of ald saves. Bad geometry was a problem back then But I am not looking to argue and I am not trying to excuse a mediocre game, I was just looking to socialize
