Dyeing Acrylic Yarn with Glow in the Dark Fabric Paint

I will use 4 ounces of Tulip fabric paint that is glow in the dark to dye acrylic yarn. I am going to use half the skein of yarn that and it is 14 ounces. The skein is 716 yards, so I will use about 358 yards. The product information label on the paint says to leave it for four hours to set it permanently.

After washing my project it did get softer and it still did glow!!!! Remember, do not wash it for 72 hours after dyeing your yarn with this fabric paint! Happy Mail/Letters welcome and will be featured on the channel in video!

How bright did this glow? would you recommend using a textile medium to help it sit into the fibers? Would you prefer for it to glow brighter?

Hi and thanks for asking! I think that it is a subtle glow and if you wanted it to glow longer/brighter maybe using more of the paint and less of the yarn to get a stronger color into the yarn. The glow on what I showed in the video is a very mild glow but the light is about 10 foot away from the actual yarn. If the yarn was exposed to a closer more intense light at a longer period of time, I do believe it would glow brighter even at the measurements I dyed it in. The paint is actually fabric paint so I’m not sure if adding anything would help it to adhere better to the fibers.

How much water to paint ratio should I use? I'm wanting to make some for my son's Halloween costume so he's not just wearing black pjs. I'm using it for the bones on his skeleton

I used 10 cups or 80ounces of water to the 4 ounces of paint. It was enough water for the yarn to have to be able to move fairly free in the water. If you were dying a smaller amount you would use less water and less paint.

How is the texture is it flexible like normal fabric or did did it change and how so? and about the consistency is it very spottet or evenly colored ?

Hello and thank you for the questions! It had a slightly more rough texture afterward. The yarn was sort of tough to begin with. So if you used a higher quality yarn to start off the process, I do believe it will yield better results. The yarn is still flexible and easy to work up. The color is all over and not spotty. Mixing the fabric paint well and mixing or stirring the yarn while it soaks helps this as well. Also allowing a large enough container for the yarn to sit loosely helps the fabric dye to get soaked up by the yarn.

Does the paint actually wash out when you wash the garment? Or is it permanently in the fiber? I dye yarn and would love to incorporate some glow in the dark

Do you think this would work on other natural fibers? Like jute or sisal? This would be so handy for camping.

Crash Vegas I think it could work if they were able to absorb the paint. The paint that I used is a fabric paint so technically it should work on any fabric or material that can absorb the paint. That would be a good experiment for me to try out on the channel! Thank you for your feedback!

Hello Kym! I think it probably will work, but it will just be a very dim effect on a darker yarn. If I can locate the rest of my fabric paint, I will give it a whirl today and I will keep you posted. Thank you for the question! I appreciate it.
