Quinn Grey all that acid in place would make it strike quickly. You might end up with color that’s unbroken but possibly more tonal contrast unless there’s an excess of pigment.

Hi, I have been watching your tutorials for at least a month now. I only started crocheting last autumn and about a month ago came across one of your tutorials. I think I may have watched all of them now 😁. I have in the last few weeks started dying my own yarn and love it. You're videos are so inspiring. It is refreshing to see an artist go through the steps from start to finish and not be afraid to experiment. I have learned so much. I see that you use the large catering pans for dying and I myself have bought one of these as a set, which included the lid and perforated steamer tray that sits inside above the water level. I am hoping this will make steaming larger amounts easier. I was wondering if you may have tried this?

Hi Sunni, I typically use vinegar as my acid. As for how much - it really depends a lot on the project. A standard ratio for me is 2 tablespoons of white vinegar per 8 cups of water - but then I will shift it depending on if I want to speed up or slow down color absorption. (in this video I started with NO acid.) I usually try to keep track of the initial vinegar set up in the "video contents" section in the description itself.

Hi again.. I love the colors. 💜 Especially the magenta color and that blue looks like a periwinkle color 😊😋 So when u say to alternate between the skeins when working with all skeins in a project when have colorways like this how exactly do we do that ? How do u mix the the skeins into a project to get a better look ?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 4 жыл бұрын
If I were knitting a sweater out of these skeins, I'd work with two at a time and every couple of rounds I might swap from skein one to skein two. Almost like I was knitting a striped sweater but you wouldn't really see stripes since the colorways are the same. This would blend the differernt skeins together a bit more so you wouldn't get an abrupt change when you realize that they're different later on. Caking up all of the yarn when you start can also help you see if there are less subtle differences between the skeins.
@KrissD.
@KrissD. 4 жыл бұрын
ChemKnits Tutorials so like me I crochet.. so would I just carry one skein and keep switching between the both skeins?

They are beautiful. I can see where it's tricky because you don't have control over liquid. Can you dye 50/50 wool and nylon? I would like to try to dye(4) for my use. What would you suggest, because don't want to invest more in than the price of the yarn. Really enjoy your videos and learn a lot. Thank you👏🏼🤗
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 4 жыл бұрын
50/50 wool/nylon would dye beatifully. nylon has a similar chemical structure to proteins (it is also a polyamide) so you can dye nylon with acid dyes. :D

Is there any dye or dyeing method that works good on acrylic yarns?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 4 жыл бұрын
For acrylic, you want a dye marketed to synthetics. The only one I've tried thus far is Rit DyeMore Synthetic and it works well on acrylic yarn. You have to heat the yarn a lot, so there will be some melting, but I have a few videos that play with various techniques.

I'd like to see you dye a more bland mixture of colors. You could use the same colors with a 0.5% solution. Well, how about the advocado and blue you used plus orange plus tan, but lower the tone so it is more suttle.

If I want to make a small amount of 1% stock acid dye- can I use say a teaspoon powder to 1 cup water?? I’m pretty new to acid dyes and -- don’t have space to store them.
@MissGroves
@MissGroves 4 жыл бұрын
A teaspoon is approx 5grams so you'd make something higher than 1% doing it that way. 1% is mostly 1gram dye powder to 1l of water
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 4 жыл бұрын
a 1% stock solution is 1 gram of dye in 100 mL of water. You can make a stock whatever concentration you want, though, as long as you are consistent with your recipes if you want reproducible results. In general, measuring dye powder by weight is more accurate that volume, but a lot of dyers use volume because its easier. I think the last time I measured, I got that 1/2 tsp is about 1.5 grams of dye in one color, but the weight:volume ratio varies with colors.

For jocard procion mix dye it says below cold water dye. I was using heat before I realized it. Is that why they color isn’t sticking too well? I mean the color is in the yarn…🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
You can use procion dyes like acid dyes with acid + heat. Procion dyes can react with water so they don't always exhaust completely. I will sometimes use heat with tie dye kits because it causes the dyes to bind faster, but they will also bind without any heat if you wait long enough.

Hi there. I’m really confused about the all the different powder dyes like from the dharma website. They have list menu for so many different types of dyes used for so many things and wats of dying. Can u just point me a beginner to dying yarns to what powder dyes I should get.. the types they have there for different yarn bases and ways of using. Like let’s say I want dyes for the wool blends and such.. and wanting to dye them in pretty much all the different dying techniques like painting or low immersion or steaming.. what dye should I get? And same thing for cottons too ? It’s so confusing. I just want some dyes to play with to use in every way dying techniques. That website is giving me a headache 🤕 lol 😂
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 4 жыл бұрын
Kriss - if you want something that you can use to dye everything then I recommend Fiber Reactive Dyes. Dharma and Jacquard both have some that people really like. If you soak the cotton with soda ash - you can use the fiber reactive dyes to dye them (think tie dye.) You can also use these dyes like acid dyes by adding vinegar with wool based yarn. A lot of dyers like these because they can be used for more fiber types than just acid dyes. I personally like Dharma Acid dyes for wool yarn. They exhaust well and washing after the fact is easy. I do have a lot more experience with acid dyes than fiber reactive dyes, though.
@KrissD.
@KrissD. 4 жыл бұрын
ChemKnits Tutorials okay.. so what is soda ash? Never heard of and where do u get? Can I just use white vinegar instead for both types of fibers with the reactive dyes ? And what is actual difference between the fiber reactive dye and the other dyes? Can u use em for any type of dying techniques as in steaming /low immersion and hand painted? Thanks 😊
