This looked like a smooth trip. The major issue for me would have been the obvious lack of sound insulation. Those kids next door were just being kids, but still...at least they were quiet the next morning. That muffin was awfully tiny for being the only food offered for a sleeping compartment. I must admit I had to look up "dreich". That was a new one on me (spellcheck has even underlined it ha, ha.)

Here in Scotland weather plays a big part in our culture, people standing chatting in the street aren't chatting about the big events of life, they are chatting about the weather, for instance we have over 100 words to describe rain; Yillen, Goselet, Upslowsin, Daggle and Drookit to name but a few, these words best describe how the rain is falling; with wind, in sheets, freezing rain, my favourite is Smitt, a fine rain that soaks you right through.

As former Rolling Stock Engineer for BR Board, after very careful evaluation, I venture to aver: no improvements will EVER be made to this MK5 Stock above & beyond the technical capabilities, ride quality & mods flexibility of the British built MK3 Sleeping Car. Current Customer Service needs to be GREATLY improved. And BR didn't need a separate office in Inverness to deliver their own pre-eminent AND Award Winning (1985 / '89 / '91 / '93....) level of quality service on their Highland & Lowland Sleeper trains. Internally & externally the MK3 Sleeper is second to none. The Danish Railway Administration were more than happy with the early batch we sold to them.

@@wharris302 as someone who didn't work for BR but did travel on the mk3 stock quite a lot I would agree with Professor Holbrook. Since you're "a train buff in the U.S." (as am I, though maybe not so much a buff these days, but, hey...) let me bounce this off you: this is not the first KZfaq video I've seen of a UK/Euro overnight sleeper and I'm always struck by how narrow these compartments are! Now, for sure, an Amtrak roomette is hardly spacious...but when the longest dimension of the compartment runs *across* the car (or carriage), you're left with that tiny little window above the sink as your vantage point for scenery! What's up with that? At least the Amtrak rooms run parallel to the corridor so you can get a panorama window to look out of. Your thoughts?

One of the most common complaints about the new Mark 5 Sleeper carriages, compared to the forty year-old Mark 3's which they replaced two years ago, is the lack of sound-proofing between adjacent cabins. Others are the constant rattling noise from the inside-frame bogies, the rough ride at speed, and the lack of storage space for luggage within the tiny cabins.

I'm delighted to see that the rooms now have running water! Lol!!! That was my biggest criticism with the new Mk5's when I rode them a couple of years ago. Both the sink and the shower didn't work in my booked Club Room all throughout the journey. Then the entire train lost power when I arrived in Edinburgh, so the lounge car kitchen couldn't make any breakfasts. Despite those faults, I love the Mk5's and I'm really looking forward to riding the Sleeper again when it's safe and fully operational. The Club Lounge car is by far the absolute highlight of that train journey. Dinner service after departing London Euston was outstanding, and there were some great whiskeys to go with it. I love your presenting style. Very watchable indeed. I am still wary about travelling on these because much as I love train travel and night trains in particular I don’t want to spend a lot of money on a premium experience only to find the shower without hot water, as reported several times by other reviewers. PS the gentle bobbing up and down as you walk adds a lovely touch!

Another great review, Dylan. The early part of this video reminded me so much of my visit to your part of the world September 2018. The weather was much better for my visit than appears in midsummer. No dreich for me! Viewing this review of the Caledonian Sleeper Classic Cabin has been a great way to finish the first day of our snap lockdown here in Melbourne (due to COVID escaping from Hotel Quarantine associated with the Australian Open Tennis Tournament). Hopefully this lockdown will be only a temporary one (at this stage until Thursday next) so contact tracing and isolation can be effected. You could have knocked me over with a feather when you started your walk to the station from just outside St.Mary's Church on Huntly Street by the river. I attended Mass there on my first night in Inverness. You followed up this delightful start by taking us up the station forecourt and through the concourse onto Platform One to the train. Such a pity the shops were closed and hardly anyone about. Then you topped it off by showing us a smile while filming within your cabin. Thanks especially for that! It's great to finally see you without the mask. The scenes enroute from Inverness to Pitlochry and the departure from Crewe brought back fond memories of my experiences. I was a little perturbed by the amount of running noise and that noisy kid next door but I suppose I have been spoilt by the quiet, smooth running of "Indian Pacific" carriages. Anyway, thanks again for a great twenty and a half minutes of viewing. Stay safe and I look forward to next week's offering.

Excellent video Dylan. I always love finding videos with the x factor i.e. about a subject I'm curious about but just as importantly, really well structured and produced. I'm desperate to ride this service once things are normal. For any Scots reading this, I've been to Scotland countless times and also allaround the world and I still think Scotland is the most beautiful place on the planet, just wish you liked us english a little more :) 😃. Shame about the noise from the next room though, I feel you'd hear a lot even from a quieter family. Keep up the great work.

First, I really liked the look of Inverness, worth a visit. The train looked fine, room well done and bedding looked comfy. I particularly noticed how clean everything was, even the shared restroom for the seated car passengers. Good thing to see during a pandemic. Too bad we can't see Culloden Viaduct from the train. Worth a picture or two as a souvenir. Thanks for the shot of the Class 92, and the Avanti ! You're right, this is the way to go.

amazing video as always dylan! seems like the problems with the new rolling stock have been fixed it still looks very posh but the best part was the beautiful views over the scottish highlands and the nice sunny weather so early in the morning in england i guess its better to do this route in summer compared to winter where most of the journey untill near london would be in darkness i defiantly want to try out this service in the future after the pandemic !! apart from that what a nice smile you did in the room :)

Riding in the Caledonian Sleeper is a great experience, I have never tried the GWR one to Penzance but would love to. It is very nice on board, I went with my family so we had to rooms next to each other so we opened the middle door and it felt quite a bit more spacious.

We did this Inverness to Euston run in 2010. This is FAR SUPERIOR than what was on offer back then. I actually loved the train, but it was singularly the most uncomfortable overnight accommodation I ever had on the rails! We still talk about the terrible "pillows." And the beds have always been too narrow! We did have much better food, which I'm sure will return. Brought back lots of memories. A great treat!

Thanks Dylan! It's great to finally see the two class 73/9s in action. I'm a RailCam subscriber and follow the Caledonian Sleepers on the diagrams, but the most northerly camera on that system is at Thankerton, just south of Carstairs Junction. Since the trains are pulled by the electric locos from Edinburgh up to London and back, we don't get to see the Diesels on the train. The Class 92 electric is the most powerful Loco on the Network @ 6,700 HP, which is why it has no problem pulling the 16 car sleeper weighing 768 tons.
