This might be the best DC39 video on KZfaq. Thanks very much for walking us through the disassembly. I was stuck for hours, trying to get the spring of the reel engaged properly, it will be easier this time!

Thanks Maik. I just couldn't figure out how to replace the Hepa filter until I watched this. They don't make it easy at Dyson for people trying to repair rather than throw away. Much appreciated, Jay

This video was fantastic. My exact same issue. Lesson learned...watch to end first!! We disassembled the entire machine and had words with the cord rewind spring upon reassembly. It won in the end, but we replaced the plug and the machine works! Cord rewind is secondary.... problem for another day. Thanks again brother.

I had the same problem. I wish I had fast forwarded to the end of the video to realize it instead of ordering a new motor (I read 115v at the motor connections, but I never checked the plug continuity. My mistake.) I never could get the plastic tabs on the sides to release the top. Luckily I didn’t have to in order to replace the plug end. Thanks!

I'd pay good money to watch you reassemble the cable return spring mechanism 🤣🤣. I gave up and bought the assembled cable return piece.
@BoydWaters3 жыл бұрын
Oh my yes. Same here. And see those two white plastic arms that just fall out of the cable spool assembly? That's part of the fun. After 45 minutes, I got the cord reel put back together... only to have the spring fall apart once again. Four beers later, the whole vacuum cleaner is reassembled, spring on the cord spool was working great but once the full vacuum is put together the spring wasn't tight enough to pull in the power cord. I decided to live with it.
@BoydWaters3 жыл бұрын
Today I learned to reassemble the cord reel, much easier to remove the spring from the top enclosure, get it started on the cord reel hub, then with the spring attached to the lower portion, get the spring back on its place in the to section, then get the whole sandwich back together. And after that six hours of work... Nope. The reel isn't pulling enough to retract the cord once the whole vacuum is reassembled. There's still some extra friction that I haven't figured out. Beer...

I had the exact same problem - a bad power cord. Would have been a 5 minute repair if I had watched this video all the way through before taking it all apart.

Thanks, people do not understand how much work it is just to make a video no mather what u overhaul. It is really funny your cable plug wire was faulty and you dissembled the dyson for nothing. Well not nothing !!! Every Dyson that we can repair is less garbidge, i just found a DC08 at the dump recycle street here in the Netherlands. I cleaned it and man o man it was dirty and smelly. But is is still working good, some new filters and now i have 2 of them. When one can dryafter cleaning the other one gets to work.

sound like you have something stuck in the flexible tube under filter element - some times its hard to see. take the filter part off, take all the tubes off and look in there
@thomasettig91942 жыл бұрын
Maik, one question concerning the reassembly of the spring mechanism for the cable rewind: When attaching the spring to the small nib on the main cylinder, on which you have to roll up the cable, the natural curving of the spring has to be looking away from the cylinder, so that you have to force the spring to be curved into the opposite direction of its natural curving to create the required suspense for rewinding, right?
@diystuff54832 жыл бұрын
has been a while, i remember i had to do it twice. but i think you got it right - give the spring some good preload, otherwise the cable does not roll up all the way...
@thomasettig91942 жыл бұрын
@@diystuff5483 Thanks a lot for your quick help, Maik! I really appreciate it. I managed to install the spring again and twisted the cylinder almost 2 full turns for the starting position, in which the cable is fully furled to give it more preload. The frustrating thing with it is, that it works perfectly with furling the cable as long as I don´t attach the bottom body part of the plastic cover. With just the upper part installed it still works, but I guess when mounting the lower half of the cover, it produces a little bit more pressure to the inner system, which is high enough to add so much friction between the twisting parts of the rewind, that the resistance prevents the rewind to pull the cable :(

How did you unhook the white tabs on the sides when removing the top? I have jammed, wiggled, and pushed with a screw driver and I can't get it unhooked
@Harry-sv2qr3 жыл бұрын
There's a Philips screw at the back, just above the cable entry, that also needs to be removed which he doesn't tell you about. Getting the white clips back in after is something I haven't managed yet!

Candace Walton use a bigger flathead screwdriver, these are stubborn

You have to use a large flathead screwdriver and push it in perpendicular to the tab and smack it firmly with the palm of your hand to pop it loose do that on both sides and it will release

Not to be done by a non electrical engineer! Also the manufacturer [warranty] dissuede's against disassmbly. Only technically qualified persons may do what you've done. This is not for the novice who simply wants to find out why the suction has gone.
