So glad there was a video for such an annoying problem on a righteous product! Had no idea I could clean out the inside of the long/purple filter. I rinsed it constantly, but never opened it up. It totally fixed the problem! Huzzah!!

You just don't know how much I really appreciate your video! I have had my V6 Dyson probably for about a year and a half, but I've only been emptying out the bin cup. However, I've noticed that so much crap is stuck, building up in the bin above the filter, but I couldn't get all of it out. Earlier today, I saw first video that I watched where a guy took out the tube filter, so I did that and rinsed it off like he did. At first I did take a straw brush to get a lot of it out of the bin cup but I decided to go for it and flipped it upside down, washed and scrubbed it without knowing how to take it apart!!! I watched two more KZfaq videos to find a video to see if I could do it right. One guy did a great video, but he didn't take apart the tube filter like you did, however he took it all the way apart, even using the torque screw driver (Holy Cow! Torque screwdrivers are expensive!!!) to get the filter piece off, which I don't think is that necessary unless you are having bad problems that can't be solved by doing the same cleaning method you just did in your video. Anyway, that guy is a motorcycle mechanic, and I'm pretty sure they love to take stuff apart down to nuts and bolts..... I think the way you did your video is enough for once or twice a year, or more for good PMCS - maintenance cleaning. Thanks!

Ok, watched your video before I ordered a new $50 battery for my V6 with the same symptoms as yours. Used a butter knife to open filter. So much dust. Cleaned, wash, dried and it runs like a champ. You saved me $50. Thank you and LeeAnn for your video!

Thank you for a clear and concise explanation. My v7 was losing power and started the pulsating. It’s a new machine (couple of months old) but before calling support, I changed the filter to a brand new one so knew that wasn’t the issue. Following your instructions, I took it apart and cleaned it out. That improved it but then it started up again. In reading your readers posts, I decided to to check the rug attachment again even though it only had a few hairs in it. Viola! There was hair and debris just visible in the opening. Removed and all is well. Thanks to your excellent video, I am no longer afraid to take it apart for through cleaning if I need to. Neighbors helping neighbors, KZfaq is a Godsend! Thumbs up 👍 given.

Hi Steve. Thanks for a great video. I thought I would have to replace my V6 until I watched your video. I rinsed out the filter before but I had no idea it could be taken off and when I did just like yours, it was a gigantic ball of dirt inside, making the vacuum pulse and then stop. Filter cleaned reinstalled and vacuum is running like a charm. Thanks again.

This is the best most clearly articulated solution for the issue of pulsating Dyson. I discarding a Dyson cordless believing it was the battery which is costly to replace and bought a new one. After a short time it began to do the same thing. Used this video and the original is now working. Now will try to be successful to unclog the newer one 2yrs old and not used a lot so that it works again. The Dysons are very expensive vacuums positioned as premium, however, they are not constructed for easy take apart and reassemble which is necessary to eliminate the frequent problem of pulsating and not working. For the price of this vacuum it should not clog so easily and need to be disassembled cleaned and reassembled to fix and be usable.

Thanks for making this video! I have a V7 and my clog wasn't in the filter, cup, long tube or roller. It was hiding in a channel near the brush head! I had to unscrew and remove the brush head as well as a narrow cover and then I was able to clear the clogged buildup. Watching your video inspired me to keep trying until I found it!

Thats spot on about the cone filter - they always get full of crap inside after a while, and just rinsing them under a tap is not enough to remove the dirt and hair thats trapped inside them. Most people dont realise how much crap is left inside after washing these filters under a tap, and of course, when you wash a filter full of dirt, the dirt inside takes longer to dry than the filter does, so this will still be wet when you put the filter back in the machine after washing it, which is no good either. The first indication that the cone filter is full of crap inside, is that the machine will only pulsate on MAX, but not on normal mode, so if yours does this, then dismantling the cone filter is your best bet, rather than taking off the shroud with a butter knife, as the shroud can be damaged doing this. Only dismantle the shroud if the filter is checked first and found to be clean and empty inside. Dyson will be making a lot of money from people buying new cone filters when theirs get full of dirt inside, and dismantling the cone filter is not something they say that you should do, but as you have proved, it works well! The exhaust filter also needs washing under a tap every few months too, and yes, it is actually washable! One other point - dont wash the dust cup in water, as this gets in the electical connectors and can cause them to corrode, so only clean the dust cup with a paint brush or something else, and dont use water. I have a V6 Absolute myself, and a V8, and I have had both of their cone filters apart like you showed, but mine were not as bad as yours. Another good tip for keeping the cone filter cleaner inside, is NEVER operate the motor when the bin is open for emptying, as you will just suck loads of dust from inside the central dust tube back through the cyclones and into the filter. Its easy to knock the motor trigger by mistake when emptying the bin, but its a no-no, so please avoid doing that, and your filter will stay cleaner longer inside.

I never thought to pull the top filter apart, but when I did I found the reason my vac was pulsing. My Dyson works like new again. Thanks so much :)

Completely took apart the filters in my Dyson Slimline V6 Animal, washed and cleaned thoroughly (had only ever washed filter and didn’t know it could be taken apart to this extent) and the problem ended up being a simple clog at the base. Someone sucked up a Dum Dum wrapper. I’m the Dum Dum for not looking there first but at least I have a super clean machine. Appreciate your video!!!

This was the solution for me! I took apart the microfilter and found it was full of densely packed fine dust. Cleaned all the junk out of it and rebuilt it. Suction multiplied by 10! Starting and stopping no longer occurred! Fixed!

Best video on this (and I've watched many). Love all my Dysons. Have always cleaned them, but this vid showed two things I'd never done (taking the cylindrical filter apart and prying off the internal cage/filter. Bravo. Watching from Paris, France, BTW (Happily Transplanted Texan).

Thanx for the insight Steve - just fixed ours. Used warm soapy water and an old toothbrush to make the long filter as new. The machine must have some kind of anti-burnout capability - a regular, simple clean is all that is required.

You are a Gem saved my day, Noticed mostly human hair winds around the Base unit, cleared that with a knife and tweezers, the cone filter was the main prob, many bounces on the rubbish bin got most of it. Thanks.

Cleaning out the filter and screens is what does the trick. Thank you! It’s not enough just to clear out the junk from the attachment head. You do need to be careful separating the pieces with something wider than a screwdriver. Now it works just as good as new.

Thanks for the video. It was obvious what needed to be done (clean it out), but it helps to see it first to be sure I'm not missing something. I cleaned it out and it works perfectly again. Piece of cake! Since its far from 90° outside, instead of washing the filter bag I just vacuumed it out with the hose attachment on my Dyson floor sweeper.

Keeping my fingers crossed that your 'fix' works. I cleaned the filter on the outside, and after figuring out how to remove the inner framework, I found and cleaned out lots of gunk. The filter is drying now. Thank you so much for your help in hopefully ending the pulsing.

Hello Steve! Thanks to your inspiring video I was able to diagnose, isolate, and remedy my issue more easily. I was about to call the very nice helpful Ladies of Dyson who provide over the phone 1 on 1 support for battery replacement as I was confident my animal filter was clean as per instructions every 24 hrs of use wash filter. Plus it was also around the 5 year mark that could mean end of life for a battery of this type. I simply removed the tube filter and engaged the power. Voila no more pulsing. Then held filter upside down in an old plastic fruit bag from grocer and was able to tap out a mass of debris that was captured inside. Replaced filter. We are now up and running like a brand new device. Thank you sooo much from a overly dry region of USA for last 18 months. Now on to the 1st Dyson which has same issue will update. Staaay Saaafe N Blesssed
