FIRE HAZARD!! In the video, he does not solder balance wires to the control circuit board. These lithium cells must stay balanced or eventually one will be over charged to the point of failure. By looking at the OEM battery pack you can figure out where the balancing leads should go. Do not omit them.

My dyson dc35 battery original doesnt have balanced charging either. They just rely on the battery over current protection within the battery cells.its not dangerous, just that bat dies quicker which Dyson will love to sell you another. Unless of course I've just got a very similar looking copy battery, which may or may not be the case.

Thank you very much. Wife bought this vacuum. House and three dogs far too much for vacuum.This is a great upgrade. Owned photo business using 100+ rechargeable battery packs. Often replaced the 3 lead cell batteries inside. Dropped a new box of batteries "Once". Within seconds the box was on fire. Thankfully no one harmed. Extra, cautious after that. Thanks again.

Cool mods. I also want to extend the battery life of my V6. The main thing to watch out for is you gotta choose cells with low internal resistance or else most of the energy will get wasted as heat (Dyson was right to warn you). But I haven't seen the resistance specified in any datasheet, leaving you to measure it yourself. Plus, power tool cells usually hold less charge. Other improvements I'd like to see: 1. power from AC adapter. 2. reverse switch to turn it into a blower. 3. disable annoying automatic cutoff when clogged - this stopped me from using the V6 for my DIY vacuum former.

Hi Please accept my apologies first. Your battery modification is ill-advised. Both type of replacement batteries you suggested are not suitable for the application. The original cells used by Dyson are Sony VTC4, which have a continuous discharge rating of 30A, also they are more expensive then the Panasonic ones you suggested. Panasonic make excellent batteries but not for high discharging applications, which is why you never see them used in power tools. Both Panasonic 18650 and 26650 cells you suggested are only rated below 5A. Dyson DC motor is rated at 350W, simple calculation suggests your cells are going to be able to deliver 111W continuously. (3.7V nominal voltage x 6 cells =22.2v, 22.2V x 5A=111W). Although they may work for you initially, your cells will overheat and degrade rapidly over short a period. More suitable replacement options are, LG HG2, SONY VTC6 or Samsung 30Q cells. These are rated at 20A and 15A respectively, unfortunately even these ones have lower ratings than the original Sony cells used. Although I personally do not condone Dyson's b*lls**t marketing tactics at all, their choice of components are excellent. I suggest if you want your Dyson vacuum to last longer, use 12 x 18650 high discharging cells in 2 parallel banks instead of 6 26650 cells. Let me know if you believe my comments are out of line, I will be happy to remove them Regards

I'm not exactly good with electronics, but I assume I could just drop in VTC5 with higher 2600mAH capacity and also the same dimension as VTC4? or put 2 parallel banks of VTC5 to double the runtime?
@seanz1983
@seanz1983 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you should be able to drop them straight in VTC5s. Although VTC5 are higher in capability, they're rated at 20A. 2 parallel banks should double your runtime, if the protection board in the battery is up to the task.

Dyson got some of those consumer screwing things going on with their batteries that ink jet printers have with cartridges. Batteries should be separately replaceable from the BMS and you should just be able to stick new 18650s in there or change out the BMS with a few screws if it goes out. Dyson has so much trouble with the batteries working. Congrats. Thanks for this video.

Lithium cells are generally a little more volatile than previous battery techs. It goes for the original 6 in the dyson as much as the upgraded/replacement cells here. Having them put in a pack with a decent charger by dyson doesn't automatically make them any safer. Get good quality cells, decent balance charger and there's zero issue with this. 18650's run at 3.7v up to around 4.2v fully charged, so long as the ampage output is at least as good as the originals, there will again be no issue. I'm another user who'd appreciate a bigger battery pack. My solution is likely to be a belt clip with a larger battery pack and the battery modified to just be a plug for the belt pack. Will see though :)

Modded my old DC34 animal pro with the battery meter. Also refitted a dying after market battery pack with 6 Samsung INR18650-25R. Only 65 watt machine, so 20A discharging rate should be safe. 2.5 Ah instead the 1.3 of the original doubles capacity. And this choice made it a cheap mod. Thanks for the inspiration!

@KallePihlajasaari 6 жыл бұрын
He did the mod first and the video came later after he had completed the mod and tested it. The intermediate steps were not videoed this time. However as mentioned in other comments it is prudent to connect all the cell balancing wires to the battery management PBC. Just take pictures as you disassemble and replace old cell with new bigger cell in a 1:1 arrangement. There is no electrical change to the circuit.

Are you, by any chance, still in possession of the original cells? I'd like to know, which ones come with the original battery pack. Upgrading to 3Ah-cells seems like a good Idea but I guess they have to provide at least 24Amps at max mode so having a look at the original cells data-sheet would be a nice start for figuring out which 18650 cells to replace them with. Thinking Sony VTC6 should be on the safe side but maybe there's something cheaper or with more capacity that gets the job done. On the other hand I don't want that thing to blow up right into my face.

If you're going to build or modify batteries you really need a battery tab welder. There's a reason that the tabs are welded and it isn't just for ease and speed of manufacture. Heat degrades the life of Li-ion cells. The heat generated by soldering the tabs can almost kill the cells. You'll stand back and be pleased with yourself not realising that the 'new' cells you've just fitted may well have as much life as old ones getting close to the end of theirs. A battery tab welder spot welds the tabs with intense but very short and localised heat, thus not damaging the cell. A crude battery tab welder can be made from a car battery, but that's another video!

Interesting idea, I was thinking though that a neater solution might be to upgrade the cells to 3500 mAh, but extend the pack to contain two extra 18650 cell wired parallel with the last two. You could then simply make an extended rear shell case for the extra two cells with very little hacking (maybe even 3d print it). An even better hack is to lose the front retaining screw and replace the rear one with a screw that has an extended thumb wheel on it. Then you can quickly swap out the battery :^)

In this video it is not used the original Dyson BMS ( batter manager system). I can tell by the position of the thermistor. I believe it's not safe to charge a pack with no connections to each individual cell, if one cell will get unbalanced it will overcharge and damage the cell. If you attempt to remove the cells from the original Dyson BMS, it will lock with the 32 red lights. There is a fix for that, in case you locked your BMS, to reset the lock by using a PICkit programmer to access the microcontroller in the Dyson pack. see my other comments

I did buy 6 cells 3400mAh in China and started following the instructions. The battery meter worked like a charm (drilled hole in the plastic). But as I managed to open the battery after over one hour I was confrontec with the battery pack with no way to open it the easy way...I am not afraid of soldering, but had no clue how to losen the contacts from the battery...indeed it also was incredibly difficult to unsolder the circuit board since the metal is so soft and leveraging does not work simple as that. Also when trying to lever the contacts on the board after removing solder paste, I somehow shorted the board, there were sparks and I was not sure anymore if I did not damage the board for good... end of story: bought 3rd party 3000mah replacement battery :-( So the video should be extended how to replace the 18650 batteries also.

Dear Dreamsci - great video - great idea - I like the phase/stage1 approach as it keeps the same physical form factor etc.... is there any chance you could upload a video show the high level steps to make the mod as you commented is need soldering etc? I'd just like to understand what is involved before I start. And from a safety perspective I work with lithium cells at work, just a lot larger i.e. 48v 756amph, so will take the necessary steps. As for AskDyson comments, please don't insult our intelligence. You have a product development plan and strategy. If you made the V6 the best it realistically could be, then you couldn't sell the V7, V8 etc.. I worked for the worlds largest manufacturer of off highway diesel engines..... this difference between 150hp and 200hp was software (and the price). Don't use Safety as defence to justify market based pricing (which is fine), but not at the expense of undermining TRUE safety.

The control ic goes into die mode if any cell fails and replacing cells simply wont work if the thats the case or you dont make sure voltages are kept to control cct while replacing cells. Had a battery issue on my v8, it started dying then it just wouldn't work. So i went ahead and bought some sanyo 20700 4250mah batteries (top of the line at the time) to replace the current dyson labeled 20700's. Soldered everything up and no go, same issue as before. Turns out I have a bad controller. So i went the cheap rout and got they china 28$ battery replacement and the casing started to melt on the first go from poor wiring, needless to say that was a bad idea and I got my money back. So I gave up and bought an authentic dyson v8 replacement battery and all was good, for about 3 months. It would be fully charged but still wouldn't work. So I said fuck it and swapped the Sanyo's over from the bad controller one I had with the new v8 battery that just started failing and Bingo! Now I have a modded Battery for the v8 and works so much longer on high! If this fails again it's going in the trash. I really like the power of the dyson, but it's not worth buying a 70$ battery every quarter.

Great video! Thanks for blazing the trail for mods on this product! As I watch the battery mods, I keep thinking about the Bosch Battery packs I bought recently (5Ah and 6Ah). They are 18V (20V Max). I could not find the discharge current anywhere, but one site suggested it was 25-30A. I'm wondering if this Bosch battery pack is close enough to the 21.6V Dyson battery requirements to use in the cleaner and avoid any damage. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
@steveclark3379
@steveclark3379 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, the 18-volt packs have 5 cells (18volts) and the Dyson pack is 6 cells (21.6volts). These voltages are nominal, with the cells in the battery being 50% charged. 5 cell battery 100% = 21v, 0% = 15v. 6 cell battery 100% = 25.2v, 0% = 18v. if you adapted the Bosch pack to fit the DC59 it would work only if the battery was kept at 100% charged, as soon as you start to uses capacity the lower voltage of only 5 cell would lead the motor control Pcb to think the battery is empty/flat and shut off the motor... The current drawn by the DC59 in normal mode 5 to 6 amps depending on the state of charge. if You run it in max the current draw is 20 to 25 amps...... the original cells in the pack are being thrashed to death 20 to 25 amps for anything more than a few seconds at a time, and that is when the battery is new (only a few cycles) and at 100% state of charge, I have upgraded my battery to 26650 cells 5500mAh. that is capable of continuous 20 amp discharge... all so replaced the BMS,

How did you get the battery meter flush against the back cover? The connector for the wires sticks out too far and I don't see how you made it fit on your mod, and I purchased the same exact battery meter that you used from Ebay... can you explain how did you make it fit on the back cover??? This is an edit. I removed my max button to make the wires go through the existing hole where the button was. I have no use for the max because it uses way to much battery power. Turns 20 minutes into 2 minutes. So my battery meter sits where the max button was.

Surely though the hoovers battery life is all dependant on the motor life etc. Putting batterys in a hoover that should only work 20mins on the single charge for one full usage. And ramming it up to a hour is possibly not the best idea for the motor and all the other parts of the hoover overheating and causing a short life span? ... I have a dyson v7. It has 30mins on a single charge and I think it's perfect! Clever bloke though. I like people who can be very handy and clever like this.

Hi i've done modification for V8 battery package following your video. I' ve seen that u made Wire connection with + pole and - pole of the entire package. ( Serial connection of batteries). When i connect package with dc recharger, nothing happens. No light blinking. As u know, the electrical circuit has 7 cables connected with batteries but in the new package ( the powered one made by 26550 type) has only 2 connection. Could you help me?

Interesting idea. In upgrading the capacity of the cells, do you need to worry about the specific type of Li-Ion chemistry used? I thought some types were better suited (safer?) for higher current draw which I assume a Dyson is. While others were better suited for higher capacity. Maybe there's a reason Dyson only included 2000mAh cells? Can anyone knowledgeable comment more on this?

Which mode I have to select for the display? Those sellers write, that you have to select the amount of batterys, so should select for the usual v6 battery 6 or 1?

Hello - good idea - been thinking of a simillar mod, being a model aviator....well !.. more a builder and repairer, so am aware of the problems/dangers with Li-ion & Lipo's. Did try to modify the old battery of my DC35 Animal a year or so back but damaged the charging cct PCB, so gave up, I've probably got a few more months left in the present 1300mAh battery pack but will attempt your mod when they die. The difficulty I had in my 1st attempt was opening the Battery case your video does help with this, it's always the case when trying to repair household equipment you never know where the little clips are and whether to push, pull or squeeze the casings, just like car trims. So is your mod viable for a DC35 animal...joe

Because, just like Apple and so many other manufacturers they are NOT green, despite all their claims to the contrary. They also deliberately use techniques to ensure that units are NOT repairable ... by ANYONE including professional engineers, who could fix these things so much more easily with the schematics being available. They want to be able to tell you that you need a complete new unit as the broken one is not fixable! Yeah ... RIGHT! Apple for instance is try to get it made ILLEGAL to try to repair their stuff! WTF!! If it's MY gear why the hell not? Who the hell do Apple think they are to tell people they can't repair their own kit on pain of prosecution? Why should I (or anyone else) be forced to pay for an expensive repair when with the right info I could do it myself?

Fantastic video. I have a question. I recently got the red light of death by using the vacuum after it shut off, twice in a row. I took the battery apart, and charged it using an appropriate charger, and it's now resting at 25v. The battery however still flashes red. Is there a way to reset the circuit board? I'm ready to buy new cells, but I don't know if my board is bad, or why it still flashes red after the cells are up to the right count. Any suggestions?

I don't have a solution. The same symptom commonly occurs when the battery pack is about 2 years old. It seems that the internal micro-controller has decided that there is a problem with the cells and has disabled the pack. When I opened my failed pack, I found that the cells were badly out of balance. When I manually charged and tested the cells, I found that they are still in good condition. There must be many good Li-ion cells being needlessly wasted because Dyson's design flaw.
