At this stage this repair video is a fail! However - since I finished filming, I've had some more thoughts and there could indeed be a Part 2! Anyways, come along on a journey of discovery and frustration!!

I know the feeling of being intrigued and enjoying the challenge. Good on you for being able to quit when the problem isn't worth the effort. I have a problem of not being able to let something go. I would buy a new one and dismantle it also to find what the original fault was. But i usually end up more confused.

Haha, well I have more parts on order and there will be a part 2 soon - so I guess I'm in the same boat of not being able to let things go!! 🤣🤣

Switch mode power supplies can be a bit of fun like that. I have never had a faulty transformer in one and I have fixed hundreds of them in all sorts of equipment. Its usually something switching the transistor, or transistor inside a chip in this case, hard on so it basically shorts the power out and is turned into a short circuit. I learned to always check all the resistors in the primary for high or open circuit as they do fail. Its best to replace any small electro caps also even if they measure OK on the primary side. Also that unit has an optocoupler feeding back from the secondary which can sometimes cause an issue, eg a faulty cap on the secondary can affect the primary, though it usually results in overvoltage or no output rather than a dead chopper transistor on the primary. I think all that silicon or glue is just there to stop the parts moving during the wave soldering process and I have never bothered to replace it. It might also be to stop high frequency vibrations or something but leaving it out doesnt seem to cause any issues. That sort of supply usually fails with a short circuit, so a slightly higher value fuse shouldnt matter, though it may not pass safety regs for a manufacturer because it might take a few milliseconds longer to blow.

Definitely the switcher FET (inside the IC in this case) went shorted. Replace the IC
@TheUltimateRecycler

Many thanks Steve, really appreciate your input here! I have found a shorted rectifier diode on the secondary side - and I'm wondering what shorts in the low voltage circuit would do to the transformer?? Is it possible that this produced extra current and shorted the semiconductors on the hot side? I've ordered another chip and the shorted diode - and will try again with a dim bulb to see what happens..

@@TheUltimateRecycler Normally they should go into protection mode with shorts on the secondary, and not damage the primary side at all, but you never know with the cheaper designs around these days. Some switch modes would blow up if they had no load on them though. That is why there are sometimes load resistors on the secondary side like you see in computer power supplies.
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler Жыл бұрын
@@StevesElectronicRepairShop Ah, ok. Strange then that the big diode is cooked on the secondary side! It's like they took a vote and every semiconductor decided to short out simultaneously!

If you are feeling bored have a go at dismantling a dyson battery pack, they are a nightmare so I made some special tools to dismantle them and no war wounds. I get heaps of those dyson chargers in hard rubbish. I did find a charger for something else in hard rubbish and when I got home it was plugged in. There was the loudest bang I have heard for a long time and plenty of scorch marks on the power point. So I opened it up, it was full of water!
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they are definitely not waterproof and almost impossibly to dry out if they have been submerged! It bugs me that these chargers are not made to be easily opened! It's pretty clear that manufacturers simply do not want them to be saved!

Yeah, although I think they would be unlikely to start a fire. An exploding fuse just makes things black - it doesn't generate much heat.

Yeh, if you look at the video at the stage your second fuse blew, there was a wisp of smoke arising from that IC, and if you'd smelled around there, I'm sure you'd have identified what had burnt! Secondly, there is no space to lie that fuse down, so, standing on its head like that, there is a bare wire with 230V leaving the top and diving down to the board again. That is why it is covered in heat shrink!
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler Жыл бұрын
Given that these units are glued closed and not supposed to be opened, I wouldn't think they would bother heat shrinking the top of the fuse just for safety - but you never know!

I don't think the other supply was the same output voltage. Replacing a fuse with wire usually just buys you a much bigger explosion/meltdown.

Yes, the Dyson power pack needs to output 26.1 Volts - so other chargers are not suitable. thick wire to replace a fuse is just asking for trouble!!
