I've always thought that a normal monster "archetype" could be interesting. Like, a skill Drain retrain that requires you to control a normal monster or a trap/spell card that negates your opponent's monster effect and then gives a normal monster you control that effect.

an underrated place for normal monster support are pendulum based decks. cards like arc pendulum and the igknight archetype are able to essentially be normal monsters with effects, meaning they aren't a brick if you only draw them

I really appreciate that they want us to play Normal Monsters. I just wished they'd actually reward us for doing so, for example by giving them decent support.

I miss the old DK days when Effect Monsters were weak stat wise, and a powerful one was a rare and beautiful sight.

I love the normal monsters. and would like to see a huge powercreep on these. Effects like flawless perfection of the tenyi are broken cards but make a balance fighting against effect monsters.

Either of these cards might decent in a HERO deck since depending on the build you could summon Rainbow Neos using Neos, as well as perhaps adjusting your deck to fit either Neos Alias as a “technically” normal monster, or one of the OG HERO monsters like avian, burstinatrix, etc

I'd be very happy to see Normal Monsters make a comeback in the game, as a lot of my favorite cards (mostly due to being old school cards) are Normal Monsters or non-Effect monsters. It would be fun to build a deck that's maybe not meta-game competitive, but at least casually competitive that has mostly Normal Monsters. I've had decent success lately on Duel Links playing Normal Monsters that can still beatdown effect monsters and can easily go into generic Synchro and Xyz monsters. Cyber Slash Harpie Lady has been a good generic Synchro on Duel Links in a Normal Monster focused deck. I could see the same kind of builds working in the real world card game if Konami made Extra Deck Monsters that worked best as Normal Monster bosses. That D.D.Derby card would be excellent if your Main Deck was Normal Monsters and the Extra Deck had Xyz and Synchros that had competitive level effects.

I've always liked using Unexpected Dai for some silly Normal adventures.

That new card isn't as restrict as we might think. It's effect is also applied if you control a monster summoned with tokens, which isn't really rare in most decks.

Would it be too op to make a Gemini field spell that allows you to have an additional summon but only for normal/gemini while restricting special summons to only those types? maybe that could push the normal/gemini monsters into being an engine at least.

Magikey is all about using normal monsters. Its monsters gain effects based on what normal monster attributes you have in the GY.

I think konami should just go ahead and make some normal monsters with crazy stats since no one's really using them anyway. Like a one tribute normal monster with like 4K attack or A 2 tribute normal monster with like 6K attack. Wouldn't even be busted seeing as they are just normal monsters, but would be interesting

I think that D.D.D. Different Dimension Derby could also be played in Sunavalon decks because it centers around a Normal monster (Sunseed Genius Loci), and they don't have cards that banish. On top of it, Sunseed Genius Loci is a level 1 Plant monster so it can easily be Special Summoned with Unexpected Dai and Rescue Rabbit like you said, but also One for One, Super Solar Nutrient and Lonefire Blossom from the deck, Monster Reborn, World Legacy Succession, Sunvine Cross Breed, Sunseed Twin and Sunvine Shrine (Which can be searched with Sunavalon Dryas if Sunseed Genius Loci is used as a material) from the GY, or Rose Lover from the hand. I know that isn't all of them, but those are just a few cards that can do it.

I already play normal monsters......Konami is late to the party. I think it's a holdover being used to playing casually in the DM era. That part of me never really died, so that's why gravitated towards Spiral Phantasms or gimmicky Monster Mash decks. Sure none of these decks are anywhere near meta. I tried but i can't memorize the play routes from a 10 minute combo without fucking up the rulings and remembering the interactions in the grave, field etc ^.^' It's probably why gravitate towards Control Decks. Less moving parts, simplify the gamestate. Even if it means making shit slow as nails lol ;/ I find normal monsters unexpectedly to Dai for.

Unfortuantely the problem with Different dimenison derby is that its a trap, it would have obviously been way more viable as a quick play spell or even a normal spell where it says that if you summoned a card using a normal monster as material this turn then banish a card

Just comes back to effect monster power creep. Way way back used to be sometimes the best way to get over an effect monster was just to summon a bigger normal monster and beat over it. Now effect monsters dont pay for their effects with lower attack, if they could even be beat over by battle to begin with.

Shatter the Darkness... A draw 1 in an era when we have the Pot series and an atk boost in an era when its all about negation... Yaaaaaaaaaaay !! Plus, D.D.D is obviously slow as a trap plus it targets AND removing just 1 card usually won't be enough.

I think a much more interesting video would be on how you think Konami should try to balance the game to allow normal monsters to be more competitive. Such as what kind of rule changes could be implemented to give normals more use. Or what kind of deck or support they would need to make normals be worth using.

I get the feeling it might be because some of the creators are doing more narrative stuff within archetypes and being able to do flavor text allows for certain parts of the story to be elaborated before they put out supplementary material? Like in their main storyline that crosses sets they just skip over most of the actual character stuff to the point where they're speeding through character arcs as if Gigobyte skipped Gagagigo and went straight to Gogiga Gagagigo and then the next card was the Risen. Having flavor text might smooth that out just a tad.

I find it hilarious that even the flavor text for normal monsters are entire novels now just like every other card.

I actually like the idea of Normal monsters getting effects and powers based on the the cards around them. It's such a Shounen trope to always have some card that allows your monster to do something. It's why the Gemini monsters will always have a place in my heart even though they are mostly trash.

As much as I like Yu-Gi-Oh, the more I play recently the more effect monsters I come across that can pretty much do anything, and can either: Not be negated, or it is incredibly difficult to do so. And I love special summoning, but it's pretty easy to get a lot of XYZ/Synchro monsters out that can pretty much wipe your field instantly. I've still won using my own custom deck, but it's a challenge. I kinda wish they'd tone it down a bit, especially now with chain effects it's just not as fun and feels more like speed dueling. Especially in games like Duel Links, where you only have 4000 LP's and 3 monsters/traps.

We need a Fusion of Dark Dark Magicain Girl and also Buster Blader, and also another Fusion monster of Dark Magician Girl and Giai The Fierce Knight or the Dragon Knight Champion possibly!

Make a field spell card that says: Once per turn target any number of normal monster cards in your hand and special summon them (kind of like a pendulum summon). This card cannot be destroyed by your opponent's card effects while you control a normal monster card.

You know how Summoned skull now has that line of text that includes it in the Archfiend archetype? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Konami has ever made another normal monster with a similar text, and I think that's a shame, because giving a normal monster even just a little "effect" (nothing too broken, mind you) could open so many different ways to make an archetype based around that small effect or even restriction of said normal monster

Ever consider monsters that are vanillas by consequence? Best example: Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. He's got multiple effects, one of them being a way to summon him. A Galaxy deck will never use any of those effects, but needs to run him at 3.

You can’t compare Red Eyes Fusion to the Gem Knight Fusion. Red Eyes Fusion allows you to fuse from your hand, field and deck. So a normal monster like Red Eyes won’t be a brick.

Konami really shot themselves in the foot by deciding Blue-Eyes was the strongest vanilla. If they decided normal monsters could have insanely high stats for their level range than maybe we could talk, but Blue-Eyes puts too much of a limit on anything else. Which is odd since it goes into so many other cards it's not even the main attraction when you play that particular deck.

Think it would be pretty good in a Harpie deck. Between Dai, Elegant Egotist, and Hysteric Sign you very consistently have access to Harpie Lady and you'll usually use it to link or XYZ summon something, so I think it's worth it at 1 or 2

Different Dimension Derby would be fun in an Ojama deck too if you think about it.

Players: fills deck with strong normal monsters and maybe the one useful effect monster. Konami: prints good effect monsters that have great effects and stats comparable to normal monsters. Players: exclusively using effect monsters. Konami: surprised Pikachu face.

Shatter the darkness is gonna be pretty good in a hero deck with flame wingman and various other hero fusions

Another deck that can make use of derby is eldlich, since huaquero and conquistador are treated as normal monsters when summoned, and you can link and xyz them of, or even used them to summon the fusion eldlich Also dragoon being really good in that deck already

Right off the bat, had to sub, drop that like, and say that they'd make bank if normal monsters were highly desirable. I've pulled as many normal monsters of any rarity as I have collectors rates out of sealed official product since getting back in and rebuilding my collection.

I think the problem with normal monsters is that one will *always* be better. Why tribute summon Dark Magician when Blue Eyes costs the same but is 500 attack stronger

Normal monsters lost their value when their attack power kept being power crept by effect monsters that didn't waste your normal, that also had protection. Let's compare vorse raider with kaiser vorse raider. (ik they're meta irrelevant but for the sake of the argument...) One is a free special that gains attack when it destroys. The other is a vanilla that wastes your normal. If Konami wants normies to be relevant again, the most they can do is pump into their support like Dark Magician, or release level 4 or lower normal monsters with higher attack like 2200+.

I don't think Different Dimension Derby would be good in Dark Magician because it's too slow but I can see it be used in Suship because that whole deck revolves around a single Normal Monster for their plays and the same thing goes for Shatter the Darkness

For the past month?? I was seeing some Support for (and to) normal monsters since last year. Even before Suship became a thing, Konami was printing some "Normal monster" friendly decks.

Magikeys with their new support!Advanced Ritual Art or Connected Magikey. One to mill from the deck, the other to Ritual summon on your opponents turn, then banish with D.D.D.
