My Channel is NOT monetised
This video replaces my earlier video of Sunday 18th July 2021 & now includes an additional few minutes mistakenly omitted from the first version. Battery removal & refitting and a short ride to demonstrate the display & power and includes tips when the electrics appear not to be working!
My new 2021 Carrera Crossfire E 2.0 is my first ever E-Bike, it is a perfect balance between range, cost, quality, reliability and affordability. It looks great and rides great.
This is my 5th bike from Halfords; these are not bike sales people, they are bike enthusiasts and want your bike to be at its best, and for you to have a great ride every time and I make no apologies for recommending Halfords.

You have to book in for a pre service inspection. I collected it that evening and was told, service if you want one but it’s pointless, there’s nothing needs going! Summer coming. Happy riding!!

From one Peter to another Peter 😃that was really helpful as im very skeptical about E-bikes so i decided to do a test ride on one this Saturday at Halfords . I'm hoping an E-bike will become my fair weather maybe All weather commute 28 miles round trip each day because i totally don't want to ride my motorcycle in London any more . An E-bike will hopefully offer me enough assistance to make me not dread the journey home but will also improve my fitness level a little more . Not sure if these particular bikes will be my final choice but on my 6 hour test ride i will be putting it to some good sized hills . Sorry to hear you mention you had a spill on the bike and a speedy recovery i hope. Thanks

I have the old version of this bike 2017 and just picked up this new model they differ greatly the old version gives power with pressure on the crank and is much more natural feeling better up the hills the new one is how fast the crank turns so you can ghost peddle the power dies up hall has the revolution on the crank has slowed I prefer the old model good review

That’s very interesting, Amanda. Thanks for posting that. Before this one, I just had the non-E crossfire. @peterjones6733

Sorry I've not seen this question before. If you're peddling over 16mph, I believe a small amount of power may be used, certainly just above 16mph seems to help a little. So, seeing as the switch is so easy to use, I tend to go from low to no power when going downhill. Won't save a lot but it all adds up.

Hello Peter - on Halfords display model the back wheel doesn't spin half as freely as the front wheel does. It's as if the brakes are rubbing? The assistant says this is normal because of the motor, but on my current 20" folding Ebike - also with rear hub motor - the back wheel spins as freely as the front. How does your Crossfire's back wheel perform?
@peterjones6733
@peterjones6733 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Well, my bike is right in front of me so I tried it. Front wheel runs freely when suspended and spun, rear wheel has slight resistance and doesn’t spin as long. An electrical engineer will tell you it’s due to magnetic resistance from back EMF. And I’d believe them. A very good friend of mine was such. Even when powered down, the eddy currents caused by running the magnets passed the stator, or vice Verda, caused magnetic friction that slows the wheel more quickly. How’s that? Bet you didn’t expect such a detailed response :)

Thanks for a very informative review Peter. You’ve answered most of my questions and have given me confidence in the quality of the bike. I’m going to test one out in the next few days. You mentioned in the video that you can use the computer to turn on the lights. How do you do this?
@peterjones6733
@peterjones6733 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments, Steve. It’s a good question! On page 17 of the SR Suntour manual, it says push the ‘up’ button on the handlebar control for 2 seconds and the light will switch on. Another 2 seconds takes it off. I don’t have a light but when I do that, the screen changes between light and dark modes: white background and dark background. But the page includes a picture of a front light and a symbol showing when it’s on, on the main display. I can see nowhere a light could attach so am assuming there are slightly different models. On one model, you can switch on and off the bike lights, on the other, it simply oscillates the display screen. It does say ‘if applicable’ so obviously covers more than one model. Strange for Germans to include an ambiguity!!

@@peterjones6733 . Hi Peter, I’ve got the bike and had my first ride out a couple of days ago. I live in the mountains with some steep hills which the bike tackled with ease and I’m really pleased with it. As you rightly say, you need to use the gears correctly and the sweet spot for the flat is 7th gear. I used the turbo mode for 25 minutes and got home with 54% battery. I have added the same accessories as you have with the addition to slime in the tyres. I purchased a new Hayabusa 20 years ago and had a flat on my first outing that resulted in a 4 hour wait for recovery and a new tyre. Setting the clock would have been a nightmare without this video so thanks again. Finally, in all honesty Peter I don’t think that I would have considered this bike without your reviews and as you say there are Halfords stores all over the country. I’m not one for service plans but ended up taking one out with the bike as they appear to offer great value.

Hi David. I wish I did!! I actually live in Liverpool. It was a group ride between Rhos-on-Sea to Rhyl and back that helped me decide on an ebike. Mostly flat ride apart from Big hump over an outlet or something. What I can tell you is that we went into Llandudno from the north… steep hill down coming in, and left by the same route. On number 4, highest effort, maintained 15mph all the way up. It was brilliant! Remaining miles shows a lot fewer while in level 4, but it’s relative. At the top, you come back down to level 1 and remaining goes up accordingly. Only every shows 52 remaining even on full charge. But discovered when it says a mile left and you have 5 to go, it’s kept a secret stash in reserve Phew! Hope that all helps. Just checked the map. Llandulas is where the hill is that convinced me to get my ebike. What a coincidence.

Hey, thanks for that. I appreciate your comment! I got it from Halfords. Yes it is sturdy, it can take up to 26kg but can’t be used with a child seat. If buying a rack, check out the panniers first because some don’t fit well. I bought two Halfords Advanced 10kg bags which clip on and simply pull off. Top just rolls over and clips down. But they both fit this carrier really well.

If you go above 15.5mph, it stops assisting (uk). Other than that, occasionally, there is no assistance for some reason. Usually if it times out due to not being used… set at 0. If it fails, switch off at battery, not handle bar control then back on. Very rarely, you may need to remove the battery then put it back on to cure the issue. But that’s rare.

I seem to have a problem now when I’m riding the motor starts to get very loud and vibrates up through the handle bars it’s not every time but fairly often, I don’t suppose you would have any ideas on the likely cause?
@peterjones6733
@peterjones6733 2 жыл бұрын
Just to state the obvious… something ain’t right :) When electric motors are balanced and nothing is loose, there’s only a slight electrical vibration due to magnetism, and possibly a quiet wine as power is applied. If it’s loud and vibrating, something is loose or come adrift. If you turn the bike upside down and rest it on the handlebar and seat, check nothing wobbles or is loose. Then with the power on, pedal it by hand, accelerating as you would, notice how it is in stay in each gear for a few seconds. Does anything change? If you peddle harder (by hand-still upside down) is it worse? Depending on what you find, it may help identify the cause. Bad sounds can identify the area of the problem. If it’s under warranty, even if not, better fault description will help your bike shop Work it out.

When you say change down to a lower gear to go uphill, can you remind me what is high and what is low e.g the rear biggest cog is low?
@peterjones6733
@peterjones6733 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry, just seen this! Yes, with this e-bike, there is only a single cog on the front so all the gears are one the rear. Top gear, top speed is the large front cog driving the smallest cog at the rear and lowest gear, slow speeds and uphill, need the larger cogs at the back. Big front cog turning big rear cog is fewer wheel revolutions for each cycle of the pedals, but easier for man and battery to move.

Hi. Thanks for watching. Yes, my bike needs just a little more effort without the battery. The bike including the battery is 7.5 kg heavier than the Crossfire 2 hybrid non-electric bike. You may also notice the bike gets heavy to ride if your gear is too high on electric meaning high torque also. But that’s to save battery power by getting you to change down and make it easier for the bike to do it’s job efficiently. Cheers!

Hi I’m not an expert on e bikes other than from my own experience. They say batteries last 2-3 year but I guess that relates to how many charges, as I believe you’re suggesting. All I can say is that I’ve had my bike now for 2yrs & 3 months. I use it a few times a week in summer but less when cold and I don’t ride it in the rain. So not a huge amount of use really. Interesting question, thanks. I believe torque. This is why: if I’m in the wrong gear for an incline, even a gentle one, IE gear is too high, the assistance cuts out and leaves you on your own. Drop down until peddling gets easier and the assistance kicks back in again. It seems an intelligent action because it would have to use a lot more current for high gears, reducing range. It supports appropriate gear choice at all power settings. Really good, actually.

Ok. I’m not an expert but there are a huge number of ebikes around. Mine is right in front of me in my apartment living room. Though similar in some ways, these aren’t similar enough to either the Samsung exploding batteries from a couple of years ago, or those that caught fire on the Boeing 787’s. As an additional safety measure, you can take the battery completely off the bike so nothing is connected. I’m satisfied that the company who produced my Carrera for Halfords has a good quality & safety record. And the sheer joy of riding an ebike outweighs any small risk. Hope that’s useful, thanks for your comment.

@@sailingachilles7810 We didn't actually go up the Orme but we came in down the hill past the little Orme and left via the same route. It's quite steep but the bikes were brilliant! Full power (level 4) and 4th or 5th gear was perfect. I think 1 in 10 is just too much, 1 in 12 or more is ok.

@peterjones6733
@peterjones6733 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nikola. In the UK, the motor can only take you up to 15.8 miles per hour. However, you can peddle faster but above that speed, it will be your own power. As you slow back down, the motor assist will come in again under 16mph. I’ve had about 30mph while going down an incline but that was my own power. Going back up the hill of full power in about 5th gear, it maintained 15mph. Which was great.

@@nikolastojanovic4580 yes, it’s peddle assist. In the UK, it is not legal to ride a bike which accelerates by itself. People Do have them but they could get stopped by police and have their bike taken from them.

Went to Halfords today to look the bikes over . The chap you I spoke to was pleasant enough but in no way the bike enthusiast you say their staff are . If fact I'd say he was rather clueless as to the bikes qualities . Pity .

The motor stops assisting above 15.5 mph, or if you’re in too higher gear requiring excessive torque. I’ve never had it cut out in any other circumstances. Do those people understand it’s operation? The software appears very well designed to me.
