Thanks Matt. The best and most clearly explained video on battery safety. Well done that man. I would just like to add a warning on battery charging. Buy a good quality battery charger, don't be tempted to save money on buying something cheap. Even the best ones are not that expensive. NEVER leave batteries charging unattended. By that I mean leave the house or while you're sleeping. If something did go wrong you want to be around to prevent the possibility of a fire. Also avoid batteries that seem much cheaper then they would normally be. These are nearly always fake, rewrapped copies with God knows what inside. Buy good quality batteries capable of safely powering the device and builds you are using.
@ejejjeje7 жыл бұрын
I agree totally about those bad rewraps. Question about the chargers. All the chargers I've used have the feature where once batts are charged, they stop giving charge to the batteries. Is what you are saying above about the 'what if' situation where the charger may not function properly? Just curious. Thanks.
@TheMojophotos7 жыл бұрын
Yes, all chargers will cut off when the battery hits 4.2 volts but I've seen cases where batteries have over charged and caught fire when a cheap charger did not do this. As a backup to this the current charger i have also has thermal protection and will cut power if it detects the batteries are over heating. Even a decent charger could still fail and potentially over charge batteries, nothing is infallible.

I have been so confused on how this happens. The e-cigs that blow up in a persons face really scares me, and I couldn’t understand it until you spoke of the little protective white ring, re-wrapped batts, or the way your tank nib sits on the battery. I disagree. As Matt said, regulated devices provide safegaurds to protect vapers from things like shorts, too low builds, stuck buttons, etc. These things simply won't happen with a regulated mod. Yeah, you CAN keep your mech from exploding, but you risk any and all of those problems. It's not even like there's any kind of advantage to a mech. So use a regulated device, it's just better.

Excellent and informative video Matt. I'm so glad that Battery Safety is still talked about, because there are many new vapers out there who need to learn about it. I still think about a video by Big Lou, who said he was a little scared of trying out a "stacked" (one on top of another battery - doubling the power to 8.4 volts) 18650 hybrid mechanical tube mod. But, he tried it, and really liked the power. I admit, I was a afraid to use one too, but I was interested enough to get one. And after triple checking my set-up (coil build, 510 connection etc.), I tried it, and liked it. Today, I own 4 stacked mech mods. Like you said Matt, even though you (Big Lou, and myself) are an experienced vaper, we all still learn new things about vaping. Stay awesome Matt and vape on.

I am very diligent when it comes to my battery safety. I keep my sets married (I have four). I rewrap if I start seeing damage. I keep my batteries in a plastic case if im carrying them about. And I use an external charger. I just got a Smok Alien 220 watt today and absolutely love it. I honestly don't see the point in having a mech. The regulated box mods that are coming on the market are just as powerful, chuck just as nicely, and they have built in safeties. I could understand a few years ago when you couldn't get 200 and 300 watt mods, but obviously that has changed. Don't get me wrong, to each their own, but I'm perfectly content with a regulated mod. At least I know if a problem arises that requires immediate attention and I don't have to throw out a set of batteries if I get a short in my atty

You don't need to vape to explode an 18650 battery, short circuits are not the only bad thing you can do. Overcharging the battery above 4.2 volt = bad. Charging with higher than specified voltages = bad. Charging faster then recommended (too high amperage) = bad. Draining the battery too fast (too high amperage) = bad. Allowing the battery to drain below 2.8 volt = bad. Overheating the battery = bad. Soaking the battery in water = bad. Protected 18650s have a built in protection circuit to protect against this, with unprotected 18650s you need to know what you are doing and stay within the limits of your specific battery. Buy quality batteries, buy quality chargers, and buy quality hoverboards to avoid fires & explosions.
@hellothere_245 жыл бұрын
Yaxez meaning when the vape production is minimal, its time to charge the battery instead of draining it out?
@buggsy55 жыл бұрын
Most regulated devices shut down when the voltage gets too low. They also usually allow a safety margin and shut down at about 3.2 volts - rather than going all the way down to the allowed 2.8 volts. I like regulated devices with replaceable batteries, so I can vape using one while the other is on the separate regulated charger.

you are absolutely right but if people do not know if a battery is safe to use, I do not think they'll know how to wrap it and even the wrap process is definitely not for the less knowledgeable people (average users)

faisal amin I've never re-wrapped a battery myself, but there is a shop near where I live that re-wrap them for me, I just pay for the wrap itself. They even told me that if I buy my own wrap elsewhere, they will wrap my batteries for me, free of charge which is awesome! Usually I just buy new batteries though, by the time the wrap is getting damaged, the battery life is usually decaying and the batteries are not lasting as long as they used too.

What about charging batteries? for regulated most ecig reviewers say "you can charge it via USB, but i always recommend to charge it in a separate charger" is it for safety or just for convenience? i have an istick Pico and i find it tiering to always unscrew the battery to charge it elsewhere, so i charge it via usb. it didn't come with a charger so im using a usb charger from joyetech that came with an ego one. is that fine? im also using a 3 hour timer to cut the current.

SweBass charging by way of usb is safe if the mod has a good charging circuit I use a DNA 250 I have no problems and my mod will charge fully in a hour and I do not worry about damage to my batteries from taking them in and out
@Ericstraordinary7 жыл бұрын
One reason that USB charging isn't really recommended is that you can get uneven charging in a dual or triple battery mod. If it reads 8.4 volts from the battery sled, it will think that your batteries are all charged up, but depending on the mod it might actually be overcharging one and undercharging the other. This often deceases the overall lifespan of your batteries.
@Brian-ds5gq7 жыл бұрын
Ericstraordinary I've heard Tales of that with other boards but In the evolv DNA 200 250 75 they monitor each cell separates so it ain't going to happen lot of safeties build into it to make sure it does not happen as well
@LegionZer0games7 жыл бұрын
Ericstraordinary depends on your mod. Newer mods are using better charging methods. Take the smok alein 220 it charges one battery at a time. It charges B battery for 3% then switches to A battery for 3% and alternates them until there fully charged then stops charging all together.

@TylerMitten7 жыл бұрын
Gurvinder Parmar They shouldn't be done away with, just made way harder for someone who doesn't fully understand everything that is involved with them. I've witnessed people in vape shops talking about different mod/atomizers that they shouldn't have because they don't know everything behind them. If I go into the local vape shop that I always go to and there is somebody that doesn't really know much, I try to help them along with the couple that own it. I'm not saying I am some expert on this kind of technical stuff, but I sure do know enough to keep me safe. My decent sense of paranoia also keeps me safe. I bought a mech mod a while ago and used it for about a week because my batteries started getting torn up. That was last summer and I haven't used it since. I know how to be safe with it, but it's not worth risking it in my opinion. I don't see how somebody would rather use mech mods over everything else. I am a regulated mod user. That's just how I started. Without all these youtube channels about vaping, I honestly think I would know very little about vaping and would likely be one of those guys on the news. I watched so many youtube channels dedicated to vaping for like 6 months before I started vaping because I was super interested in it, not only to quit smoking, but as a hobby. It's more of a hobby to me at this point, but I couldn't just quit that hobby out of the blue. I'll probably be a vaper well into my old age..... or unless the government pulls some kind of bs to kill vaping for good.
@pdgable7 жыл бұрын
I don;t know about banning them but mech mods should have huge warning all over them--especially hybrid mechs. The Noisy Cricket is one of the biggest problem mods because it is cute, small and cheap as dirt! I saw an unboxing for this mod and it didn't even have a damn manual! That is unacceptable. Shame on you Wismec and Jaybo.
@killacoiler17077 жыл бұрын
it is videos like this that are so important to this industry. I always stress that people need to educate themselves on battery safety and ohms law not just for mech mods but for regulated as well. Unfortunately not every sales person in every shop is knowledgeable in these areas and that can lead to potentially dangerous incidents. The general media doesn't have any understanding of these fields either so inadvertently it ends up with skewed information making its way to the masses in the form of bad publicity. I think that shops should host seminars and workshops for people looking to get into using mechanical devices or interested in rebuildable atomizers so they learn how to use ohm readers, ohms law calculators, and how to trouble shoot builds that have shorts, hot spots etc. this was a well executed video Matt again thank you!

The pens was cooking the oil by itself 4. 1 pens (510 pen) started smoking 5. 1 pen got so hot it burned my friend lip 6. Was stored in vacuum seal bag Can't have 5 faulty pens. Crazy thing is the store is still selling it.

Buy a better quality device joy tech is very cheaply made and one in a thousand could be faulty I had the i joy and it wasn't firing and luckily I opened it up as the one battery was heating up so I threw it out the garden and it blew up out there but would have been a different story if I had put it back in my pocket and I did some research on joy tech amd they are a low budget device to make more profits so use it for now but upgrade when you get some extra money in your pocket maybe smok or something better

A cheap option is a voopoo drag. Great durable dual 18650 mod. Up to 157 watts. Great color choices. I have a silver with the turquoise panels. But I only use it to prefire my coils, i mostly usr mechanical tube mods.

Why would you carry extra batteries in your pocket anyways? I cant think of any reason I would.

I've been wondering the same thing. But I think those might be the people who used to smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day, so now they need to have the vape basically attached to their face at all times.

Chad Schrader single 18650 probably wont last a day for everyone depending on the build or tank they are using. I vape a lot when i get the chance at work. Even dual battery mod might not last a day if you vape on with high wattages. If people would be smart enough they'd at least get a plastic case for them...

thought this would be a cool place to post a funny story since were talking about batteries. i got kicked from a group because someone asked how to check a battery, a 18650, and i said touch your tongue to the positive and the negative, like a nine volt. thought it would be impossible and would love to see someone try but someone took it as fact i guess..well worth the ban on that one

I don't understand, why use mech mods at all? I'm interested to hear anyone's opinion on this, as I don't know if there are adavantages on using a mech mod instead of a reg mod
@yooyoo86375 жыл бұрын
Because some people just want to pick up a mod and fire it, hard to explain if you used one for a few months you would know what I mean
@buggsy55 жыл бұрын
I have used mech mods off and on for years, and still don't see any real attraction. It used to be that the only way to get high wattage was with a mech mod, but that has not been the case for years. Now regulated devices go just as high and far more safely. And they are available with large batteries, which used to be the other attraction of mech mods. A disadvantage of a mech mod is that the vape quality decreases continuously as the battery discharges. Unless you are using a regulated mod at close to its maximum allowed wattage, that does not happen.

It’s also really shitty that there are businesses which call themselves vape shops & when a new vaper comes in looking to purchase vape equipment the employees don’t explain anything & just sell anything to make money. I’ve been vaping a couple months & I’ve had to learn everything I now know by researching it online & through KZfaq videos like this. Thank you to those of you taking your time to put the information out there for new vapers. When I bought my first kit the guy even sold me eliquids with a much too high nicotine level for a sub-ohm tank. And I wondered why I had such a bad experience with my first attempt to switch from smoking to vaping. Now that I’m more knowledgeable, I know what nicotine level eliquids to buy for my tank & I’ve purchased better equipment online & I’ve made the transition from smoking to vaping without any further problems. The information available online for vapers, especially beginners, is a blessing to people like myself who are from small towns with only 1 or 2 vape shops & neither of those shops taking the time to explain the important things customers need to know.

@K-Dawgg4207 жыл бұрын
you need to make an addendum on this RE the mech mod building. you said the build wasn't causing a vent/ thermal runaway. this is false. imagine it in a circuit diagram, a short is a Co Necton from positive to negative with VERY low resistance, right? so if you make a build that is 0.01ohms you are essentially making a short, just because it's not shorting on the mod casing etc doesn't mean it's any different. other than that, keep fighting the good fight bro.
@MattFromSMM7 жыл бұрын
+AnAngryMudkip I'm gonna make a separate video on safe building. Mooch has been trying to recreate thermal runaway with low ohm builds and it's not happening. He can give you more info on this. I doubt he went down to .01 though. I'll get more info on it. Again, i didn't say it was impossible but it's not the reason for this recent uptick in batteries blowing up.
@K-Dawgg4207 жыл бұрын
Suck My Mod well if you ignore the fact it's vaping, and look at it as an electrical circuit it would be the same principle, mooch will vouch for this. but yeah maybe extreme low builds aren't as much of a problem as originally thought. however I wouldn't like to try vaping a 0.07 build on a 5a battery haha. I just think that you need to emphasise that building really low is still not a good idea, you can still vent batteries that way, I've done it myself. I'd worry about those new to vaping mechs trying to go super low and then hurting themselves (via venting) and they may come back saying "oh well Matt said it doesn't matter how low I build" and so on. more to cover your ass man.
@MattFromSMM7 жыл бұрын
AnAngryMudkip yeah I wasn't trying to make it sound like it's ok. It's still not good for the batteries regardless. I will be making a "building for noobs" type of video soon.

Bigboi666 He said that the does in the news isn't coming from low ohm builds, it's coming from the other reasons he mentioned. Batteries very rarely vent due to being used with low ohm builds.

I have had the unfortunate pleasure of experiencing 2 thermal runaways on two different Mechanical Mods. They were both high quality Brass mods and both of the scenarios Matt explained here are exactly what caused it. The first time a tiny piece of Kanthal I couldn’t see had stuck to the inside of the RDA and it happened to get wedged between the switch and the base of the mod. (Due to the magnets in the switch collecting it from my build table) I got lucky and wasn’t injured. The second time was in the same week! Made the mistake of installing an RDA that didn’t have a protruding 510 pin. It exploded instantly and burned my inner thigh plus gave me a 2nd degree burn on the palm of my right hand. It was a nightmare! Been vaping for over 3 years at the time and just got carless. I mismatched the RDA to the wrong Mech Mod tube. Cost me a weekend in the ER so it can happen to anyone!!! Please!! Always keep your head in the game while installing your batteries after a build as well as keep a clean build station!! Sounds like common sense but we all have gotten distracted while finishing the last leg of a build. Vape On and God Bless!!
