Here are some e collar tips for beginners to help you train your dog! Some people call these remote collars or shock collars but we generally use the phrase e collar. Either way, they refer to the same thing.
The e collar should be an extension of what your dog already knows. We make sure a dog knows sit, sit stay, down, down stay, and off leash come before we consider using this as a tool! You should never teach a dog their commands with an e collar! E collars are meant to advance commands and behaviors they already know!
E collars are used to either get a dog's attention from far away, or act as a way to give your dog small and safe corrections for behaviors and commands. Not every dog needs an e collar, so first you need to determine the age, temperament, and training goals that you have with your dog.
Dogtra e collars are our go to brand we recommend to clients. They are safe, reliable, have excellent customer service, and come with a ton of features! We have a lot of experience with Sport Dog and Mini Educator collars and while they are fine, we definitely prefer Dogtra collars.
In this video, we are using and explaining a Dogtra Arc. The ARC is an e-collar system that can be programmed to use with two different dogs at the same time. They also sell other e collar systems that can handle up to 10 dogs! Most of Dogtra’s e collars have 127 levels of stim, which means you can easily customize the level for your dog. Some collars have a lot less levels, meaning there is a big jump between each level.
These collars also have a range between ½-¾ mile. The collar we show in this video is 3⁄4 of a mile! Generally speaking you will not need this range, and a good rule of thumb is take away a ⅓ of the range to account for interference. All of DogTra's collars are waterproof, so if your dog gets wet or likes to swim, the collar will function as normal. Both remote and receiver also hold a charge for hours, and become fully charged in 2 hours or less!
When fitting your dog for an E collar, it needs to fit snug so it does not move around and the contact points should be on the side of your dog's neck. They have flat muscles there, meaning it is easier to get a good fit. Good e collars should attach like a belt buckle to ensure a consistent fit.
Keep in mind that the DogTra collar we show in this video has a Comfort Pad rather than the standard metal prongs. These provide extra comfort for your dog, as well as allows you to get a better fit.

The collar is super easy to use. The Dogtra ARC is a two dog system, which is why you see the orange buttons. Until it is paired with a second collar, those buttons do not do anything. The gray button on the front facing of the remote is the vibrate function for collar 1. This can be great if your dog is far off and you need to get their attention. Just be mindful, sometimes the vibrate can be a little scary to dogs until they are properly trained and realize the vibrate is a good thing!

The gray button on the side is the correction button. For this model we recommend you keep the collar on C, which means continuous, The N “Nick” is fine, but often is not long enough of a pulse to get your dog’s attention. On the top of the remote is the knob that allows you to easily adjust the stim levels of the collar. The last button on the right hand side is blue, and if you hold that down, it powers the remote on and off.
