WARNING: This video is for advanced level trainers and training.
Ecollar training is one of the most humane and fair ways to train a dog. Sadly, there are people who don't understand how to use e-collars or are just plain stupid. I've published many lessons on using ecollars in a fair and humane way.
For those of you who would like to see a ready to buy version of the ultimate ecollar, check this video:

This video covers modifying your ecollar to make it more effective, more humane and an overall better tool.
I've kept this hack a secret for almost 10 years, but I see more and more people struggling with their ecollars and hate when I see the dogs suffer. Oftentimes I see dogs that get fried on the ecollar because the handler keeps turning it up and up because the contacts don't connect. This hack will help with that.
That being said, I strongly caution you to ALWAYS condition a dog to a new ecollar - AND, ALWAYS test the collar on yourself to the top level you can handle. Your dog depends on you to be fair. BE FAIR! Ecollars are not remote controls like on a TV, they are tools that send a signal to your dog.... Its a YES / NO switch.

What I found after using the stimulation for a while I switched to the vibration mode and it works just as well if not better since I have a husky with thick double coat, she is always off leash while out on trails and no matter what distraction has perfect recall!

This is how I condition dogs with thick coats to an ecollar, too. If me, a trainer that couldn't make a solid consistent connection to the dog, how could I expect a novice dog owner to do better?

Believe it or not, the vibration mode is more aversive than a working level stim to most dogs.

Robert, I have to say man. I'm in awe of your work. You inspired me to, not train dogs, but rescue dogs/animals from terrible owners. Its rough, very rough at times, but extremely worth it. I had to learn to hold back what I want to say to these people, and instead look for every shred of evidence of animal abuse, to somehow make their miserable lives even worse.

You are freaking awesome! ❤ Also, this is the truest way to learn canine behavior and hone your skills. Those who ONLY get a dog from a specialist breeder don't impress me. That's like only driving automatic cars. You can drive manual. Working with rescues means you have greater experience working with whatever comes your way.

As an engineer, adding a small supporting plate for the two additional prongs would help with stability and ensuring contact without collar twist. Either 3D printed or hand cut from thin plastic or similar. Can be mounted on the outside or inside run of the collar.

The prong ecollar is a pure life saver, with a thick coated GSD I always had consistency issues with the my e collar out of the box. Increasing the amount of contacts made it so I would be able to give very consistent corrections at lower levels.

@@allaboutroofing2 yes I've tested it on myself on max level... but I've never done it to my dog. The whole principle is to give your dog the least lowest possible level to get the desired outcome and then lower it even less than that once they understand the process. But I did it on max just bc I wouldn't ever do something to my dog that I wouldn't want done to me. And exactly for the reason of, if anyone told me it was inhumane I could tell them I did it to myslef and know how it feels.. So if I know how it feels on max and it didn't cause sever pain and I use it on the bottom 15% of what its capable of then nobody can tell me shit.

@@allaboutroofing2 I've heard dog youtubers say that dogs prefer low electric stimulation than vibrations. it's said in the video but if your dog don't react to elec stimulation, mb it's because of poor contact and don't increase the levels until there is a random contact and an unexpected big shock cause damn that felt bad when I did that to my dog

Might sound silly, but I have an e-collar for my pug. This hack seems like the perfect solution for me. This will let me get much better contact with the pug’s skin while easing up on the tightness of the collar simply because the strap won’t be pushing the box into her neck. My shepherd doesn’t have any issues with her collar, but I‘ll do that for her, too. Great tips!

Bet that would flip the 'no negative training' people on their head.. yes. I am being extremely sarcastic. Thanks again for the incite

??? Great video. I used an ecollar in conjunction with long line for recall training my Rhodesian Ridgeback. The collar (Educator) has a tone to shock function, so eventually, in conjunction with a whistle or "come," I would tone as well. Now my dog comes, even from deer just using the tone. It has made his life so much better because we back to woods and we can go on off-leash hikes every day. My question is, what are your thoughts on using the ecollar for redirecting a dog that is hyperfocused on other dogs? I don't want to create an association that seeing other dogs =unpleasantness. The possibility to meet/play is stronger than the highest value treats (rare steak cooked in butter and a little brown sugar). Even that is not enough for certain dogs (dogs that are similar size and look like the would be fun to play with. It makes walks a challenge. He is so great until we have to try to pass a dog going the other way on the street (especially when the owner is not paying attention- for example: flexy leash and on the phone)... I've been considering getting the "comfort wings" that Educator Collars sells as an additional add-on. I'm not as "mechanically minded" as you are, Robert, and a little worried I'd screw this up somehow. But watching this, I realize part of the idea of the comfort wings is to disperse the stimulation a bit more, and they DO say you can often/usually use a lower level once you use those "Comfort Wings", "Comfort Pads". For someone who's not as comfortable doing this hack, do you think spending $40-50 for those "Comfort Pads/wings" might make a meaningful difference in my dog's comfort? Thanks Robert--you've heard it a million times, but let me tell you once more--you're the BEST out there!! When a collar sits on a dog's neck, the dog's skin forms a closed circuit between the 2 points. Doing so with a prong collar (more metal) only decreases the resistance. Where are you getting this idea that you're going to short an ecollar (which is operated by a battery) and what is the "downside" to this if it's connected to a rechargeable battery? You just recharge it right? I'm confused by this part... I've worked very little with electronics but I don't think metal is more conductive than water and if water/dog's skin doesn't short it, then neither should metal.

So when I tap the button on the remote I'm still only feeling it from two contacts instead of all four. Am I doing something wrong? Are the transmitter contacts weaker because the flow of electricity is going to the added contacts? Or is that how it's supposed to work, one pair fails the other pair will make contact?

What is the thread size and pitch? i tried it on myself 1st. went up to a 7 on my own neck. WOW. On my cattle dog, the collar was not working so i kept turning it up, tightening, re-adjusting. Then all of a sudden my poor dog barks and jumps 6 ft straight up. So i put it back on my neck and pushed the button at 16, bang! I might have jumped higher than he did. now i feel like such a dick. eventually i got it to work at 5 but the collar feels so stinking tight . too tight to go trail running. This showed up in my feed at the right time. What is the thread size and pitch?

If I use this lower on my GSDs neck while also wearing a Prong "Keepers Collar" snug just below ears/high on neck, would that be okay? I'm wondering about the risk of shorting the collar. You say NOT to use a "Fur Saver" chain collar with this die to risk of short, that makes sense as those are loose and move around a lot. But what kind of collar would you use to attach a leash? Even with a plain, flat collar & leash, is there a risk that the metal clasp on lease & d-ring on plain collar could touch prongs & cause a short? I'm wondering if you are suggesting to only use this set up if your dog is ONLY wearing this & otherwise off-leash?

Robert, everyone says (including you on past videos) that the smaller Herm Springer links are better when used as a regular training collar--but with your hack, especially on a undercoated/thick coated dog like a German Shepherd, I imagine the bigger Herm Sprenger links would work better with your hack, right? Because you're not going for a better "pinch", you're simply going for better contact (when using your hack--no pinching or physical leash pressure involved, just mild electric stim). Agreed?

The dog feels the shock much more intensely than a human does. So I suggest if you feel it on 4 then use less like 2 or 3 on the dog and really observe how the dog reacts because some dogs are much more sensitive to shock than other dogs. My collar has vibration and shock. Some dogs hate vibration.

Why does a dog feel it more?
@perrypelican9476
@perrypelican9476 2 жыл бұрын
@@alaskayoung3413 thats from my observation. Why are some people more sensitive to pain than others? I guess we will never know for sure why dogs are different than people. When I try it at a certain number that I hardly feel and the dog reacts heavily, it seems obvious that he feels it more intensely. Maybe it's something to do with their skin or how much hair they have that causes electricity to conduct more easily. I don't know why. Maybe short haired dogs conduct electricity less than long hair. I do think it's a good idea to watch how your dog reacts and not base it only on how you feel. Dog trainers suggest that you use the lowest setting that works. It's like when you say a command. It's best to say it calmly and get more and more intense until it works. You want to use thé minimum amount of intensity for anything. If a child misbehaves and stops as soon as you calmly tell him to stop, then great. No need to get heavy u less he continues. Same idea. That's my opinion.

Hi Robert. I have a chihuahua that is short haired and have the smallest educator for her. The problem I have is getting a proper fit, as it’s either to tight or shifts and doesn’t make proper contact. I decided to attach receiver to a soft leather collar, which seems to fit better for the time. However I am unsure if leather is ok to use? I plan to make a bungee type collar set up for her. Thanks for your time and great content!

Will you take responsibility for the risk of sending a dog into water with an electronic tool conducting electricity to metal prongs that has been altered against safety recommendations and outside manufacturer testing? Or does your statement that this is only for “advanced handlers” (yet posting it online for all to see) do enough to clear your guilt?
@Karina-Loves-Andreas
@Karina-Loves-Andreas 3 жыл бұрын
@@emilyanderson5832 I don't use the Educator Collar while it is wet. It was developed by electrical engineers. The charging ports have rubber plugs that prevent water from getting into the unit. The collar is stated to be safe to get wet in the manual. The company has been around a long time, and the product appears to be safe; Mr Cabral's alteration doesn't actually change the way the electricity is conducted, and he's also done this a long time-- so no, I'm not sweating it. I did look into it further.

The problem is telling people, as a whole, that this modification is safe for XYZ. Altering the wiring and making modifications to a product that conducts electricity is incredibly dangerous and unethical. Obviously everyone can take the risk of they’d like but it is not something that a “professional” should be putting out to the general public, even which the acknowledgement that only “experienced handlers” should do this - because we all know some jackass will inevitably screw it up and fry themselves or their dog. It has happened to people with a regular ecollar malfunction, and creating a modification without safety testing is dangerous.
