In 1923 Schulhoff has made his return back to Prague, where he later became a professor at the conservatory. The first piano sonata (1924) is a unique mixture of the classical genres, jazz and dance rhythms, but at the same time aiming at an expressive simplicity and smaller emphasis on rhythmicity compared to his Small pieces inspired by jazz. It is bound together by the reccuring cluster motif and the bizzare Liszt-sonata G in the bass. The dedicatee of this work is the German novelist Thomas Mann.
