As a kid, I loved the "Cloak and Dagger" (another Henry Thomas film, see what I did there? Lol ) of trying to sneak ET out to the forest 😁. We were spared the trauma of dissecting a frog. Our science teacher did it while we all crowded around the counter, then he handed out some sheets for us to label and study.

i believe ET had lost hope of his kind ever finding him, leading to his “death”. but once he felt they were near, his heart lit up and his joy couldn’t be contained. i always thought he was young also, like henry, and was maybe a bit impatient when his ship didn’t answer his call immediately. the more he had to wait for them to answer, the more he lost hope.

It's more scientific than that. ET's species need to be connected to each other in order to survive. Hence, it had no choice but to connect w/ Elliott. But they're not the same species, which is why they both couldn't stay healthy. Plus, they could only establish one connection. ET let Elliot live by disconnecting, but was revived later on after the rest of the species got in range on their way back to Earth.
