For collision avoidance, the Zoomie needs a proximity sensor on the front to detect objects in the direction of travel. A laser based TOF sensor failed to perform to our needs. The TCRT5000 is investigated in this video as an alternative sensing device.

Some of the technologies explored in this experiment include, but is certainly not limited to:
[*] Autonomous Robotics
[*] Photo reflective sensors
[*] Time of flight sensors
[*] Hall effect sensors
[*] Rotary encoders
[*] Odometry
[*] Line following
[*] Color recognition and detection sensor
[*] Automatic route planning
[*] Localization
[*] Robotic cars
[*] Dead Reckoning

Hi GM, Thank you very much for the kind words! I really appreciate that. I am not sure why viewership is so low but it is obviously something I am doing wrong. Hopefully I will figure it out soon so that I can grow the channel quicker. Thank you again for the very kind words! Cheers! Chris

@@MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut oh no,. do not look at other channels - they have loud music and loud speech and blend in a lot of memes and stuff. I enjoy your channel, because you are NOT like them! Keep up the good work and just be yourself :)

Hi tomek3633, Thank you very much for the encouragement and advice, very much appreciated. I really do want to stay true to myself with what I am doing, I enjoy it immensely and if it benefits others that is just fantastic. Aside from simple changes to keep it visually interesting or perhaps a switch-up of the theme music for this series, I have not intentions of drastic change. Cheers! Chris

Thank you for making this video. Your channel inspired me to experiment more with Raspberry Pi Pico. 😊

Hi Mihai, I am very happy to hear that you have been inspired to experiment more with the PICO. It is truly a great microcontroller with a lot of capability. In a recent interview with Eben (from Raspberry Pi) he mentioned the next generation of this device and he sure seemed excited. As typical though indication as to when. In the meantime there is still PLENTY to explore! Cheers! Chris

Dear Chris, one thought from me: if two of your Zoomies move toward each other, their speeds sum up hence reaction time of each car would be only half of your calculated value. Must we (=you) deal with this issue or will it not be possible to have frontal collision of two moving zoomies?

Hi tomek3633, Always good to hear from you. You bring up a VERY GOOD point, actually a couple. First and foremost, you are correct that, yes, the reaction time/distance would have to be cut in half when considering a head-on collision - I believe I ignored that completely. Fast forward to now (the project is about 3 months further along now than that video) and I am currently refining the "rules of self driving" for the Zoomies in order to start programming that into the Zoomie. Yesterday I just started removing redundant safety devices I put into the system from my very first thoughts on how to do this whole experiment. In order for the Zoomie to get in the wrong lane two "systems" would have to fail for that to happen - however there is still an unsafe probability it will happen. With all that said, Yup, head-on collisions can happen, and I need to keep the code tight enough to hopefully react before mayhem happens. Also, there is another sensor coming up that may also help in this matter. Thanks again for the great question! Cheers! Chris
