In Delhi, the onset of the monsoon coincides with the fruiting of the jamun tree. The smell of squashed ripe and unripe fruits that fall on the ground mixes with that of the soil and creates a heady aroma that informs us that monsoon is here. Jamun is said to be a native of India and thrives in dry conditions. The jamun fruit has a host of health benefits. It has antimicrobial properties which make it perfect for monsoons when infections, especially those of the stomach, are common. Fruits are prescribed under Indian Systems of Medicine for controlling diabetes.
