My guest is Chad Gracey - drummer and founding member of "LIVE." Chad and I discuss his stellar drumming on the band's hugely successful record "Throwing Copper" released 30 years ago this month. We do a deep dive into the recording process, songwriting, and Chad's approach to creating tasteful and supportive drum parts. We discussed his drumming on "All Over You," "Selling The Drama" and "Lightning Crashes." We also talked about Chad's podcast, "The Gracious Two" (link below). So come along for the ride and please subscribe!

Another great one, John! I had the privilege of doing "Lightning Crashes" on my gigs and appreciating how Chad applied what he did to give it that great buildup at the end, at the same time playing for the song with that great feel he has.

great interview...I was at The Orpheum show...I was 17....we drove from Western Mass with a big map book trying to navigate Boston to get to the show and we know what happens if you make one wrong turn in Boston...I think Weezer opened the show...made it home around 3am and went to school for 7am...Chad was a HUGE influence on my drumming...another great guest choice John...Thanks for posting this...I remember seeing him come out barefoot and immediately went home and started playing barefoot as well

CG is absolutely one of the most underrated drummers of our musical lifetime. Everything a drummer could play, he’s played. Live material went from raging rock, Heropsychodreamer, to practically country music with Horse. Dude is the the most tasteful player ever. Listen to Gas head…seriously listen to it. This dude is the king of ghost notes. Master.

Probably the most underrated drummer of all time. Been following since Mental Jewelry. Phenominal instincts.

Seeing them with STP this summer and so bummed that Chad won't be there. Will be my 27th show.

I met Chad and the rest of the band in Chicago during a record release party (hosted by Q101 when it was a rock station) for Live's _The Distance to Here_ many years ago. They played an acoustic set. It was stellar! Had a nice conversation about his influences and what not. He was gracious, funny and seemed completely shocked when I said he was one of my drumming influences. Humble guy! Hope I didn't freak him out lol, as I was young aaaaand I'm pretty sure I hogged-up most of his time from other people. :D His drumming (and the production) on _Throwing Copper_ and _Secret Samadhi_ are among my all-time favs.

Did he say he recorded Throwing Copper on a Pearl Export kit? It really doesn’t matter if the kit is high end or not as long as it’s impeccably tuned, played and recorded.

"LIVE From my Drum Room with Chad Gracey" John, I love your channel, your amazing guests & truly appreciate all the hard work you put in to produce these interviews 🙏 But alas my friend: Considering that I saw "LIVE" play last night in Sydney with Incubus, I'm calling this podcast title, "clickbait" 🙃😅 lol (Live are still a great band, but personally I missed the feel & subtleties of Chad's playing on those songs with the original guys.)

Steve Ferrone played on Duran Duran Notorious, not Tony Thompson. Tony played on the Power Station record.

Is there any conversation on here about what is going on now with the band Live? Ed has a whole new band of terrible musicians and call it Live. Chad Graceys amazing drumming is missing. Also I met Chad Gracey on the distance to here and V shows. Chad Gracey is so kind

What is disappointing is that people dropped off after Throwing Copper. Secret is an unbelievable album. The shift in the mood of the songs was genius.
