E27 - Installing rafters on our shed with our own milled lumber

Things are moving up as we install the rafters along the ridge board on our new shed constructed from our own milled lumber. We use the Harbor Freight sawmill to make our own true 2 inch dimensional lumber and it challenged us to figure out what fasteners to use on the slightly thicker boards. The Bauer 35 lb. jackhammer was also used in this episode to bust rock and rip up some new shale.

OK, todays comments: (1) STOP standing on top of the step ladder! Get a taller one = safety! (2) Don't choke up on the hammer, this is not baseball. Hold it at full length to get the full force of each swing = easier. ( 3) Who is flying the drone while both of you are up working on the rafters? (4) Thanks for the lesson on the proper use of the speed square - really! (5) What about shrinking as the lumber cures? (6) It is looking fantastic!!!

1 - Meg just needs to grow a few more inches. 2 - You know my family is deeply rooted in baseball. This is instinctual. 3 - I was going to mess with you and say it was Autumn, but it was on auto-pilot. 4 - Proof you can still teach old dogs new tricks. 5 - This question reminds me of a Seinfeld episode. I hope I'm not standing in the shed one day thinking, "Damn, feels smaller in here..." 6 - Thank you my friend. One of my favorite things of being your neighbor was getting heckled by you whenever I had on my toolbelt.

I'm kind of surprised you haven't strapped the jack hammer to the backhoe. I think you could chew up a lot more of your quarry quickly. I'd tie in with rope as a planned point of failure in case you are pushing too hard with the hydraulics.

Hey Jon and Meg, I've been watching your stuff for a while now, this is my first comment. First off, I'm loving your stuff, keep it coming. I have a question (not a critique) : Sorry if you've already addressed this question elsewhere, I looked, but didn't see it. It seems you are using freshly cut milled wood to build your shed. Are you worried about the lumber eventually warping since it's not dried yet? If so, what steps are you taking to address this, or are you not worried about it because it's just a shed? Just curious. Hi Nate, glad you're enjoying the channel! When we built our shed, we dried the structural members in the barn for about 2 months. We figured out a rough count of 2 by 4/6/8s and stacked them. After milling for some time, it became obvious to me that the main moisture is drawn from the wood pretty early. I took the "it's just a shed" approach after a short dry time and started framing with Meg and my brother. As far as the poplar we used on the siding and all the little trim pieces, I wish I dried them like the pine because they shrunk a lot. It was frustrating, but I wasn't too concerned because the battens would cover the shrinkage gaps. That's really the only thing I would do different if I did it all over again. Maybe make the siding 1 inch instead of 3/4 as well. That would help with the cupping issue I was having. Hope that helps if you're getting into a project of your own. 👍

Congratulations on youre build now sheating and you should bring more gravel on that low side before rainfall screws up your base.

Looking good, great progress. 9x12 pitch is good for the roof just a bitch to shingle. Would recommend metal roofing so you only have to stay on the steep angle once.

That's the plan - and yes, I'm with you. 9/12 is just about the point when you start feeling vulnerable while on top of the roof.

Curious - will you stick with 2"x4" lumber for the next build, or use nomimal "2x4" size? You're actually using 52% more wood, which is awesome but may not be needed - especially with stronger woods than pine.

Yes, I have a whole mountain of it! We use it as road base but reserve the larger pieces for a multitude of things.
