E3 is Dead - Why Nintendo Fans Should Care

Күн бұрынIt was announced today that E3 2023 is officially canceled, and it seems like E3 is gone for good. In this video, I discuss why Nintendo fans should actually care about E3 dying, as that era of Nintendo represented the best way the company has ever delivered game news and portrayed its brand.
While we still have Nintendo Directs which have replaced E3 presentations since 2013, they pale in comparison to the best E3 years for Nintendo like 2004, 2006, and 2010. Remember the Twilight Princess reveal in 2004? Or the iconic Reggie speech? To date, those have yet to be beaten.
What do you guys think? Should Nintendo stick to Nintendo Directs or try to revive the magic of E3 with their own live press conferences?

Completely disregarding how great Nintendo directs could and HAS been for the past decade or so because of that one direct from late last year. I can easily do the same BS arguement with Nintendo’s live presentations with “Wii music” and taking about the “sales chart” or how about the confusing reveal of the Wii U and Nintendo Land Fireworks? Or how about when Miyamoto tried to demonstrate Skyward Sword and the game wasn’t working right? Sure there are some bad directs, but they are few and far between compared to their bad LIVE presentations. There are some good ones like E3 05-07 but after that, from 08,09,11 and 12 they weren’t that great! Plus the reaction scene hasn’t left, it’s changed. There are dedicated channels uploading live reactions from streamers and content creators alike and of course Kirby GCN who’s been recording these live presentations from the blessings from Nintendo NY and NOA mind you! Nintendo still knows about the reaction scene and have at least been doing their best at it. Finally there’s a reason why so many gaming companies are following Nintendo’s footsteps, because they realize how convenient they are and to some extent like State of play, it works! The way you said at the end that people prefer the directs = preferring garbage is such a dick move to your audience! Nintendo Directs and presentations had given us great announcements like most of their first party games and even some great timed exclusive games that are not “farming RPG sims” or “Smash” We got great announcements like Splatoon, Metroid Dread, Metroid Prime 4, Tears of the Kingdom, Prime Remastered, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Monster Hunter Rise, NMH3, Astral Chain, NSO retro games like N64, Genesis, GB/GBA, etc. I understand why you want live presentations, but there’s reasons why Nintendo hardly does them anymore and it’s mostly because of the fact that their last live presentations weren’t so great. And even with the Switch live presentation it was a bit underwhelming besides BOTW, Odyssey and SMTV.

I appreciate the detailed comment, but as I said I don't mind directs if the announcements are amazing. But I would enjoy the announcements even more if they were presented in a live format. And I would say even the bad live presentations are fun in a way since that leads to infamous moments like the Wii Music demo as you said or Konami's hilarious E3 presentation in 2010 or so. A bad prerecorded presentation isn't the same to me. Nintendo Directs are fine and better than nothing. But why can't I ask for more? Yes, Nintendo fans still react and try to do some of Nintendo's work for them by going to the NYC store and recording the reactions. And I appreciate that. But it's not the same. It's like the Olympics in Tokyo in 2021. Nobody was in the audience. Are you going to tell me that was one of the better Olympics? Of course not! People wanted to be there and to react in person.

Also my point about the farming direct was that Nintendo would probably not try to cram 10 farming games in a live presentation because someone in rehearsal would probably notice how poorly paced that is and say "Ehh let's rework this." They don't want an audience to laugh or boo at them. Yeah I understand that direct isn't every direct, of course, it was just an extreme example. I didn't mean to insult anyone who likes directs (I like directs too more than nothing).

Why would Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft skip the next one? That's a guess at best with no proof

It's extremely unlikely they would have a presentation there. They might show up in some capacity (which I doubt) but it wouldn't be anything like the past.
