1B Umpire Lance Barksdale ejected Rays manager Kevin Cash for arguing warnings issued to both teams after Yankees pitcher Albert Abreu hit Tampa Bay batter Randy Arozarena for Arozarena's 2nd HBP of the game. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2023/...
Facebook: / closecallsports
Twitter: / closecallsports
Discord: / discord
Arozarena had hit a home run in his first at-bat (1st inning) and was hit by a pitch for the first time in his 3rd inning at-bat.
Given the Intentional Throwing At Batter and Ejection vs Warning rules, what would you have called here?

1. Arozarena Has been doing that with the 3rd base coach all season. 2. Warnings should have been issued after the *first* HBP. He just hit a home run, there’s bench chatter, warn. Boom. Done. The crew allowed a second attack by the same team. At that point there absolutely should have been an ejection, but it never should have reached that point.

That would be a silly way to handle it. It's more likely he'd have thrown a couple out of the zone, _then_ thrown at him. As you said: right after a mound visit seems suspicious. It's a sinker with a lot of run, so it's entirely possible he's pitching inside to jam him to have him put it on the 3B side so they could hold the runner at second, and it simply got away from him. I can't fathom why they would throw at him that early in what is still a reasonably close game in any case.

@@mbdg6810 I disagree -- I think a HBP in the first AB following when he hit a home run and hot-dogged a bit on the bases (whether he does it all the time or not is irrelevant -- right or wrong, the Yankees clearly thought he was showing them up), and immediately following a mound visit, is about as clear an indication as we can have. But even if there's plausible deniability, as Lindsey continually reminds us, the umps can warn at any time for any reason. If they had done that they might not have found themselves in the shitstorm that they did later.

After one in that situation? Warn. Two times? Eject. Frankly I think more pitchers and managers should get tossed after HBP. I can't justify risking a player's ability to play the game if: A) The pitcher doesn't seem capable of controlling his pitches. B) The catcher and pitcher have decided they can't get him out unless they take that risk. C) They got their feelings hurt. An ejection doesn't hurt anyone other than the team and pitcher that decided to risk the batter's ability to play. If taunting gets out of hand warn or toss the player that's doing it.

I don't think randy had any intent on running into the player at 2nd base. He was just getting out of the way. That just seemed like an awkward play and nothing there. After the HR by Randy, yes the pitch was inside but difficult to say intentional. The second one was definitely intentional with how inside that was. However, first pitch at bats results in Randy getting hit. There's intent there. The pitcher definitely should've been tossed. Both sides warned. It's not like you're talking curve ball pitches here.

I thought the umpire handled it pretty well overall but he should've issued a warning after the first one. Without him doing that he wasn't probably gonna eject a pitcher right away on the 2nd one. I understand Cash's frustration cause no way both were unintentional. That said, Randy shouldn't be doing that. Yeah I get it's supposed to be at his 3rd base coach but it's also right at the opposing dugout. People act like baseball is the only sport where people get mad about that stuff but in basketball you get T'd up and in football you get a 15 yard penalty for taunting. I love the way Randy plays but he's gotta know what comes off as swag and what comes off as disrespect. That said both teams should move on...if they wanna use this as competitive fuel go ahead but this would be really dumb to carry into the next series between them in terms of throwing at each other, etc. It happened. Everyone's fine. You move on.

You, Yankees dugout, are completely clueless!! Arozarena denied showing off in front of you. He was just having fun showing off in front of his third base coach and he lights the fans up at Tropicana Field. That’s what he does. Plain and simple. By the way, Yankees, you’ve been treating Arozarena and other Rays players like s*** because of the amount of bad blood there has been between you and the Rays over the past few years. The first hit by pitch was nasty and so was the second one. Why didn’t the umpires issue warnings on Arozarena’s first hit by pitch and eject the pitcher on the same batter’s second hit by pitch. Good for Kevin Cash protecting his players before receiving an ejection.

Definitely should’ve ejected the coach and pitcher. The Yankees completely misread the gesture.

Im not really sure how you can determine intent so how do you issue anything? In some ways the old days before the warnings were better; at least it was obvious a message was sent, no guessing needed.

if i were umping i would let the second hbp go and let the rays retaliate then send out warnings. i think the sport should embrace the hay day play and let the balls start hitting batters again an eye for an eye as they say!

I agree with this. Let people retaliate then put a stop to it. If they want to get ejected after that so be it

The problem with this is there is a universal DH now, so pitchers don't get their just desserts for intentionally throwing at people anymore.

Baseball has been pansified over the past few years. I somewhat get it because these guys are paid enormous amounts of money. If y'all like to be pansified, I dont see much talk about that non-slide into 2nd base that could have injured the Yankees infielder? Man I miss pre 2000 baseball.
