3B Umpire and Crew Chief Joe West ejected Blue Jays pitcher Ryan Borucki and pitching coach-not-manager Pete Walker after Borucki hit Kevin Kiermaier with the first pitch of Tampa Bay's 8th inning. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2021/...
Two days earlier, Kiemaier upon being tagged out to end a half inning on a play at the plate picked up a scouting card dropped by Toronto and took the card to the Rays dugout. The Blue Jays were reportedly upset after the incident occurred and Rays manager Kevin Cash issued an apology to Toronto skipper Charlie Montoyo.
Warnings had not previously been issued.

The ejection was 99% expected but they shouldn't suspend him. Some teams just have bad blood between the two and when you try to police it as an empire it's going to continue to boil over. Hopefully that pitch settled the dispute with him picking up cards that don't belong to him. Baseball is honestly similar to hockey where their is unspoken rules that aren't even rules in the actual game. Like I think theirs a rule if the pitcher is like 2 balls in or something you're not allowed to homer the third. Or something like that.

Great job by Joe keeping his calm when the Blue Jays pitching coach came out and you could see Joe tell the manager to get control of his coach. For newer umpires this is imperative that you don't argue or discuss anything with a coach and only the manager. This takes the heat off of the situation and now the manager has to deal with the coach and really deescalates the entire situation as you can see after the coach left Joe and the manager had a very civil conversation.

Nothing unexpected here. I'd expect an opposing player to grab the card that was carelessly dropped on the field. I'd then expect him to get plunked after he advertises it. And I'd expect the pitcher to get thrown. No drama here, except that Jays coach that had too much caffeine.

I think Pete Walker was actually arguing the ball and strike calls Joe West made last night at home plate and Ron Kulpa the night prior. Both umpires had really horrible games and the calls were skewed in favor of the Rays. There were two walks that should've been strikeouts for Manoah. But Joe West called them balls. Kirk also struck out on a pitch that should've been a ball.

setting up a camera and a tv specifically to be able to beat cans every pitch every game is a bit different from picking up a scouting card when it drops in front of you. Also, it's not like that card lists every pitch in order. Still, i agree that taking the card is poor sportsmanship - i wonder if eventually it will get put in the rules as cheating. Seems ot be football had a similar incident a while back (though i know how much CCS hates it when we mention football on a baseball rules question...)

Question for any trained umpires reading this: You’re approached between innings by the manager of a team in the Blue Jays situation from the Monday game. He explains that an opposing player had picked up a scouting card which had fallen out of the uniform of one of his players during the course of play. The ersatz Blue Jays had asked the opposing team to return the card, and the opponents had refused to do so. He is asking you to intercede and require the opposing team to return the scouting card. Do you do so? [Our hypothetical manager doesn’t think the situation is specifically covered in the rulebook, but knows that umpires have the authority to make rulings in such situations even if he can’t cite the exact rule (which I believe is 8.01 (c) ) ]

I notice a possible flaw in suspending players and maybe managers or coaches. If the player or non-player gets suspended then it is more than likely that he will be serving the suspension while his team is playing a(some) team(teams) other than the team that was the "victim" of the offense that the player or non-player was suspended for. I think that is something MLB needs to look into. What if that pitcher is suspended while his team is playing another team that is still in the hunt for the playoffs just like the Rays? That other team would actually get to take advantage of the Blue Jays team's weakened pitching staff rather than the Rays.

(1) If, in the umpire’s judgment, such a violation occurs, the umpire may elect either to: (A) Expel the pitcher, *or* the manager and the pitcher, from the game, or (B) may warn the pitcher and the manager of both teams that another such pitch will result in the immediate expulsion of that pitcher (or a replacement) and the manager. I drive 2 hours from Fort Myers every few weeks to get to a game, but Tampa residents are a bunch of babies who don't want to sit in traffic for more than half an hour to get to St. Pete. If they build a stadium in Tampa, the fans might come. Another problem is Florida fans have divided loyalties to all the other grapefruit league teams, and in Tampa especially to the Yankees. But the politics of the Bay area are such that it's going to take a miracle to make a new stadium happen.
