I've always disliked how 4music showed non music related content, I'm glad they're going back to a primarily music based schedule!

The Box is staying, Box Hits was one of two sister rebrands launched in 2016, Box Hits replaced SmashHits showing 00s and 10s music, and Box Upfront replaced Heat, focusing on new music and emerging artists (Box Upfront was closed in 2020 at the end of a temporary BoXmas rebrand). The Box Plus Network now consists of 4Music, The Box, Kiss, Magic and Kerrang!. On the programming side, I should note that until 2019, Box Plus was a joint-venture between Channel 4 and Bauer Media, so Box Plus had its own management team, I used to have email conversations with the Programming Director, who was the one buying in the rights to shows, it wasn't Channel 4 deciding to place them on 4Music rather than E4 (at least until Channel 4 took full control of Box Plus and merged operations into their own).

Having left this genre of channel behind after exiting my teens, it makes me feel my age to see The Box brand disappear. I didn't even know it was owned by Channel 4 until watching recent episodes of The Ident Review. Oh, how luxurious it seemed when The Box launched, when you could choose the video to play next instead of waiting for MTV to play the one you liked! On a landline number! Wow... 🤯😉 And showing how far back I go, taping the ones you liked on VHS, like a video version of the mixtape, except in hindsight, not as good because you can't take it with you. KZfaq fixed that... Chasing ratings by putting general entertainment on a previously specialist channel has been a recurring trend in the digital channel age. Cartoon Network fell into that trap with Toonami, as the owners rebranded it from its former anime and Western action animation slate into a general kids channel to justify their live action acquisitions, but it killed the ratings, and it later became Cartoon Network Too (iffy pun) before they gave up. Strange fact: thanks to that rebrand, the final season of Batman of the Future didn't air in the UK until almost a decade after its US airing, when Chart Show Entertainment scooped up a lot of 'action' animation and anime properties to air on Pop and its boys targeted spin off Kix. You could tell as all the episodes had the first episode's credits at the end for Toonami to do credit squeezes with. With broadcast regulations changing over the years to redefine what is considered acceptable for children, an outlet for that stuff never returned in the UK, like it did in the US, so DVD, Bluray and now streaming has had to fill that niche. I wonder if that hurt profits for their producers because the potential audience was limited in the UK and Ireland until streaming came along. Back on topic, straightening out what goes where again, hopefully will do as the press release states and gets people looking in the right place on All 4 for shows and gets music back to the forefront on 4 Music. I didn't particularly watch it, but as you say, clear purpose and sticking to specific audiences instead of the classic market obsession with ALL the audience ALL the time, should be the way forward. Channel 4 is certainly busy right now, isn't it?

Man, the box! That’s been around since the mid 90s when I was a teenager. You used to phone a number and enter.the 3 digit code for the video you wanted. It would come up on the screen and you’d see if it was one you liked as you’d remember the code. Simple times! 🤩

Can we talk about Trending Live: You Select? If anyone doesn’t know what this is, 4Music used to have an daytime live broadcasting entertainment show called Trending Live and for about a year of that show, the Trending Live people add another show to their programming called Trending Live: You Select (April 2017 - April 2018) In this show, the presenters would give you 2 songs to choose from and the viewers would vote for their favourite song out of the 2 via Twitter and their favourite would get played on 4music Because the show only lasted 1 whole year, i kinda miss it and us music lovers would really appreciate it if they put it back on or at least let us watch episodes online.

It is going for good. Rumors say that it could be the end of the year.

Having been whisked back into TV fascination thanks to KZfaq reminding me it's still a thing, I was surprised to see not only the shift with Channel 4's line up, but also with a lot of major players on traditional TV. I grew up watching FreeSat after it's incredibly successful launch as we waved farewell to analogue in the UK (£15 for a full satellite install and a box as part of the switchover scheme was just something that couldn't be missed!), enjoying the extra offerings of The Box, 4Music, Clubland, Kerrang, and the unknown to most but free to air on our satellites, a hidden MTV channel from Europe! Best part about Satellite was always being able to scan to see what hidden gems there were as they were testing or moving things around ;) *all* Disney's linear formats on traditional TV whatever the platform, worldwide are now completely defunct, MTV have lost a channel here and now rebranded yet again so we have 80s and 90s branded ones to compete with NOW Music's 80s and 90s options, Replacing MTV Base and Rocks, and dropping Classic completely... We also lost POP a few years ago on the children's front and I am very surprised to see the sheer amount of content that has simply vanished. It proves that in today's day and age, everyone and their dog is moving to Streaming content, albeit sometimes *not by choice* but because they have to in order to actually access the content (Disney being a huge example, but Nat Geo and Discovery choosing to keep their linear content platforms running!)

Controversial opinion: I would put 4Music in 4Seven‘s spot. I like 4Seven, however, it’s drifted away from what it’s remit was originally, now essentially being Channel 4 +24. It hasn’t been good for 7-10 years at this point so give it a rest.

I still remember when it was The Hits and had that never ending competition where you could win a Mac mini (but they didn't name it as a Mac).

I'm back as I do want to say something, but Wikipedia is wrong about something, that been Box Hits been the only one left of the Box Network, as Wikipedia is inaccurate regarding that. On my EPG, there is a channel called The Box that also still exists (as of 18:15pm on June 28th 2022)

I only watch this channel because they are showing Japanese Ninja Warrior - I'm a Ninja Warrior fanboy - but cool to see yet ANOTHER sister channel in the Channel 4 network.

This reminds me the time when MTV spun off their music content on a new channel called MTV Music when they took over the channel space of MTV Rocks in 2011.

4Music leaving Freeview will mean the end of music TV on Freeview since all the remaining music channels on the service are Manchester-only.

Do people realise that if Channel Four is sold off, they will have to pay a subscription? At present, the ads pay the bills, and as there are no shareholders or owners, all surplus is plowed back into the content. Once sold, all channels will be expected to produce a healthy profit for the owners and shareholders. Pay per view plus subs will be mandatory.

My opinion about the new channel from Channel 4? E4 Extra Late. But at least not too much Extra Late!

When 4Music was actually becoming kind of like an E4 2(or E4 Extra?) Channel 4 saved the day by putting 4Music back into the music game and not sitcoms(pre-2018 4Music) and I'm really excited to what E4 Extra becomes. I think MTV changed to reality shows only because of MTV Music and MTV Hits(also formerly MTV Rocks, MTV Base, MTV OMG(VIVA), MTV Classics and Club MTV(MTV Dance). Who remembers when 4Music did that really weird phase from 2015-2017, I thought they were funny, how about you? I won't really miss Box Hits as it didn't really look that pretty to begin with in hindsight. E4 Extra will be a new page in the E4 book, and I like Gordon Ramsay, so that's a plus! :)

4music was taken off from Freeview I believe. It’s other services but it was taken off from Freeview.

The Box and Box Hits are separate channels, only the latter is being replaced, the main Box (original) channel will remain.

this slapdash approach to calibrate or just outright throw new channels at us is a trend I hope absolutely dies on its arse frankly. what the broadcasters should be doing is stripping back the amount of channels we have (80% dear air or just repeats, which is now occupied by streaming and catch up) and reforming the likes of the main channels bbc1,2, itv, c4, five (I guess) and a handful of others and invest in just making new stuff that gets shown there first before it ends up on streaming. maybe a broadcast TV exclusivity thing? like watch on TV now and will be on catch up a week later?
