Show Notes:
0:30 - Jason meets Aly Orady, the CEO of Tonal, a smart home fitness center that measures, monitors, instructs & adapts for a personalized full body workout.
1:11 - Jason gets Aly to explain how a tv monitor is used as the focal point of the Tonal smart home system.
2:44 - Aly explains why Tonal is the most advanced piece of fitness technology, as the system functions using “digital weight.” All resistance or “weight” that the system provides is not produced by physical weights, but by magnets.
6:29 - Along with Liz, a personal trainer, a tutorial is delivered on how to set up and start a fitness program with one of the built in trainers. All programs begin with a strength assessment.
10:12 - Thank you to our sponsor Uber! Visit www.uber.com/moving forward to keep up with all of the great improvements being made to the experience.
13:18 - Jason inquires about the use of camera and sensors on the unit, and what their purpose is.
15:11 - Liz speaks on her experience as a personal trainer, and what the top reasons are for people deciding to quit on fitness programs.
20:53 - Does this technology take away jobs from real personal trainers?
22:15 - Thank you to our sponsor, Walker Corporate Law Group. Call 415 979 9998, or email scott@walkercoporatelaw.com, or visit www.walkercorporatelaw.com to have the best legal advice and coverage for your business.
25:13 - Aly shares how long he’s been working on Tonal for. 3.5 years of building hardware, software, marketing, showrooms, etc.
28:57 - Aly shares what motivated him to create this software.
36:50 - Closing remarks. Visit www.tonal.com to learn more about the product!

A $49 OPTION is fine, but something this expensive should come with a built-in set of programs at no extra cost. I'd also prefer if users could BUY additional workouts rather than RENT them.

Agreed. My friend has one and says you can create your own programs as well, without video of a trainer but just text and stats of what you are supposed to do.

People knock this product, but it's absolutely genius. The price point, mostly the monthly subscription is it's biggest draw back (The price of the product is justifiable, but not the subscription price). With that being said, as shown with Pelaton and other new technologies eventually prices will go down and competitors will make similar products.

I think the price for the actual machine is doable, the subscription should be reduced or at least optional. I think it will all be fixed with time but need to sell it first then add the subscriptions later. Would be cool to see different packages, example, have one with Spotify or pandora, or have some that connect with apple etc.

I dont know man... Xbox one had a big problem when they told everyone that they were gonna have a camera and mic always connected and watching lol I was almost on board until he said something about the camera and mic, that arent programmed to do anything yet. I'd need an extra room to place something like this in. I think that the people in my house would feel invaded if i placed it in their space lol. Yall should scrap the mic and camera and make it so that you could mount your phone to it to work its mic and camera. So the thing is watching and listening ONLY when you want it to be watching and listening. Man that would be lit

The going rate for home fitness classss as of early 2021 is $39. And that includes live classes. I hope Tonal, which does not have live classes, has dropped their prices to match. And now they have serious competition from Tempo, which is similar but uses free weights and live classes and is like half the price.

I use a door pullup bar and add loop tension bands to assist when necessary. Pushups in various hand positions and resistance with weights and bands. I have some dumbells and kettlebell that I can increase weight with soft strap weights. I have a good set of handle resistance bands that stand in for lateral flies and other exercises by placing one end in closed door frame. I have an ab roller, some mats, an exercise ball and a ambulatory walker without the seat so I can do dips. I run stairs, hills and flats. I have a bike trainer for back wheel and a real bike for long rides an hill work and a good fold up rowing machine. All of this takes very little space and provides everything one needs for mixing up workouts. No one really needs fancy programs and hyped up routines to do the job. Check out KZfaq videos for more ideas and your good to go..

I think tonal is onto something. peloton's indoor biking and treadmills is competing against a person going to the real world biking or running with beautiful sceneries. Running is free in the outside world, biking is also cheap with a personal bicycle. However, Tonal is competing against indoor gym with is not a better scenario than your home. gym equipment is more expensive than tonal and gym doesn't have dynamic weights.

I don't know - I have to wonder - "Who will/can buy this?" It seems to me that the ideal customer would be someone who: a) Has a lot of disposable income, b) Doesn't have much space, AND c) Has social anxiety issues. The unit, installation cost, and subscription cost raises the question of "Why not just get a gym membership?", and frankly, I only see with a lot of disposable income being willing to purchase a unit plus a subscription. But a person with a lot of disposable income would probably be able to afford to have a home gym AND hire a personal trainer for one on one trainer (like the trainer in the video), so this unit would only make sense for someone who has a lot of money, but for some reason, doesn't have a lot of square footage where they live (which is strange), AND doesn't like dealing with real people. My opinion - they aren't charging ENOUGH for each unit, because their potential customer base is probably really small.

I like it but I think $3000.00 is too much and on top of that you have to pay a monthly subscription to access the videos. I would rather buy a functional trainer with actual weights with more adjustability for $1500.00 and a bench for maybe $50.00 and do the same exercises. As far as the screen and videos go I don't need that stuff.

I know it’s a psychological thing but it’s damn offensive. I’d rather they just charge me an extra $600 for the price of the machine. Maybe I’ll get rid of some of my other useless subscriptions to pay for this. I already know how my body will react to this and I can’t wait. The monthly fee is dumb. Everyone’s trying to keep their hands in your bank account every month. Sick of this shit. Ring Doorbell was the last company I bitched at about this. Ring wants you to pay $3/mo to review video vs just installing a damn memory card into the doorbell. Returned my Ring with a big F U note. Replaced it with a $35 camera from amazon that does the same damn thing (same features) besides ring the doorbell.

You may be new here, so please allow me to provide background on this "terrible interviewer". Jason Calacanis, the interviewer you're referring to, has a wealth of experience in media and angel investing, and has been conducting interviews for a long time with some of the top people within the technology space that has provided a tremendous amount of value to people. It's actually quite shocking Jason doesn't have a larger community. He's also gearing his questions to provide insights to founders/investors, which may differ from the typical questions asked because he is considerate of the mindset of his audience. Finally, his "ignorance" about fitness may actually be intentional so that he can act as if he's the average consumer in the fitness space that isn't as well-informed as more experienced consumers, thus providing the founder of Tonal with the opportunity to explain the full range of benefits. Hope this helps!
