What kind of lunatic company, throws 125 MILLION DOLLARS, at a debut title from an indie studio ( from California, no less ), and releases it during the time of Baldur's Gate, Diablo AND a Bethesda title!? Do these people just hate money!?

From Wikipedia: **After Telltale games went bankrupt in 2018, most of the developers working at the studio moved to Ascendant Studios, including Ascendant Studios' art directors Dave Bogan and Julia Lichtblau, and lead writer Michael Kirkbride. The studio grew from 50 developers to over 100 developers in less than a year.[4]** **The studio announced its first game, Immortals of Aveum, at The Game Awards 2022 and It will be published under Electronic Arts' EA Originals program.[5] In 2023, Ascendant Studios announced that their first major game, Immortals of Aveum, will be released on July 20, 2023.[6] The game was later delayed to August 22, 2023.[7]** This development studio was founded in 2018. They managed to release literally one game in five years - Aveum came out on August 22, 2023. This is such an insanely bad development period that heads ought to have rolled. You have to ask: what the HELL were they doing? By all accounts they should have been able to do something because EA obviously didn't care, on top of having no marketing, no hype, no oversight. Most Hollywood movies are overpriced money laundering schemes and the top 0.1% of actors are so ridiculously overpaid you could make 3-4 budget movies on each individual's salary. Duane "The Rock" Johnson gets paid in excess of >50 million alone. We're talking 200-400 million USD per Hollywood movie, and MOST of that is going towards actors, who aren't even relevant anymore. The rest of the budget is wasted on backroom deals which is why every movie has been a complete flop - movies have to make back over two times their production cost to just break even. So, EA sank $125m into Aveum and did nothing to support it. A vidya equivalent to any movie flop. Just what were these hundreds of people DOING for five years, getting paid for what? This isn't a simple matter of useless roles and useless positions that plague the film industry. Aveum is the best 'case in point' for everything wrong with entertainment mediums. Also it was probably just a tax-writeoff and/or financial crime. But sure, blame the gamers and say that releasing single-player FPS games is the problem. Not like DOOM wasn't successful, or tons of indie devs like the guy behind Dusk.

In the early 2000s people theorized that Treasure Planet, Atlantis the Lost Empire and Princess and the Frog (all of which underperformed with Treasure Planet being an outright flop) were deliberately set up by Disney as an excuse to shut down their 2D animation studios and pivot fully and exclusively into 3D animation which is cheaper (and can be outsourced). I know this is just baseless conjecture, but I feel EA might've done something similar. They brought in a studio full of talentless hacks, diversity hires, and inexperienced newcomers so they could dump a few million on them over the span of several years, and when the garbage they released inevitably flopped, corporate could point at it and say "Single Player games are dead, see how they fail?" With the intent of making all future projects always-online, live service nonsense.

@@led-0185 I guess you are not completely wrong with this one. The last one is a maybe. EA indeed hates SP games. But in Immortals of Aveum's case, I will simply say it's because nobody cared to hire a real pro to look at the project and check if this mess of a game would even be worth the money. But you could still be right about them trying to kill SP games.
@Lorekeeperhaos
@Lorekeeperhaos 5 ай бұрын
More or less the same thing that happened with Wild Hearts, which had a lot more room and better timing that Aveum. They still dropped support rather than fixing the issues with the PC version running poorly-the big thing that was keeping a number of people from playing amid a string of rough PC launches-and continuing with their free DLC that was supposed to be more frequent, smaller scale updates compared to Monster Hunter World's and Monster Hunter Rise's Title Updates. The game itself was fun, if somewhat clunky with the building and field resource management and some forced cutscenes during specific quests(mainly two key quests for story that, if done online at release, could not have their cutscenes skipped). Most of the weapons felt really nice to play and unique compared to the Monster Hunter equivalents and the fights were fairly interesting once you got to the High Rank equivalent/second real tier of equipment and difficulty. They could have had a solid Monster Hunter competitor if they stuck with it, but EA is wont to abandon things that don't immediately get them the results they want over looking at what issues people are having and trying to address those to get good word of mouth and more sales over time.

Games keep getting more expensive. They also keep getting worse, same with movies. How is that possible? Has the industry been so corrupted with incompetent professionals? Even a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 (or more accurately "GTA with horses") has some odd design flaws and weird design choices, something that wasn't present in RDR. In any case, on the topic of uhh... Floyd jokes: "What song did they play during his funeral? Every Breath You Take by 'The Police'."

You... uh... answered your own question there. A good idea is free, and a single person can make a great game by themselves on a home PC now. This is somewhat true for movies as well, but to a lesser extent. The only way to spend that much money on a video game or movie is if you're hiring people just to pay them and/or paying everyone an impossible salary (of course money laundering is on the table too, but the former makes enough sense).

Same because 9/10, I know what the game is going to include. There's some game coming out where a dude and his wife's ghost are essentially monster hunting and spirit slaying. However her ghost is that of a black woman that fits the varying boxes needing to be checked, the time period is something akin to 1600's America, and, not gonna lie, the way her character speaks sounds straight up evil. Definitely a game I am going to wait until I hear some reviews from legitimate sources mainly due to the writing of the ghost wife. She sounds straight up villainous and like she is gaslighting her husband.

The games made by AAA companies are often benchmark simulators, specificly made for rich people that can afford the latest and most expansive hardware, praying that game will work. We litteraly ended saying up that anybody that wants or got the gtx 4080 was probably a benchmark player. Like why else would you buy 4080 if not to benchmark your pc? Not surprising they pin the blame on everything else beside their own poor choices. Which I when to go and take a look at the steam reviews for this game. One of the negative reviews said the game only had three weapons to choose from. If true. Warhammer 40k space marine the video game had more weapons and that was released in 2011. Republic commando as well and that was 2005, back before disney ruin star wars. Heck even one of the positive reviews for immortal here, talks about it having performance issues seven months after release. So huge budget, for a studio first game. Takes a very long time to release. Limited variety in gameplay. Performance issues, needs a high demanding computer to run it. Release at a time, when most people are busy playing hyped up sequels. Geez I wonder why this failed. Maybe they game just sucks or they picked a poor time to release it. Rather than being no demand for single player shooters. For last I looked, the robocop game release last year was rather popular. Which that was a single player shooter. Hmm. You know what i'm thinking. There is a demand for good single player shooters. Not random trash you thrown onto market.

It truly amazes how bloated budgets are getting. Indie devs and filmmakers are lucky to see seven digits in their budgets and yet they're the ones innovating the most either idea or tech wise. As the saying goes "If I can't buy it, I'll make it myself." If you truly want something to work then you have to make it yourself which reduces cost pretty quickly. Just look at all the crazy stuff the director of Godzilla Minus one had to do. Yes that's a bit bigger compared to others but that man and his team was determined and it shows.

So that headline is a bit of a lie. Namely, the game isn't "singleplayer" in the same sense that Dead Space is a singleplayer action-horror series. It's a multiplayer always online looter-shooter, with the standard games-as-service delivery method for both content and monetization that can be played alone. What baffles me is that despite it's flaming garbage fire story and dialogue, Borderlands remains the best looter shooter for at least the gameplay gets what people want out of that kind of game. Shoot enemies and get gear, to then shoot tougher enemies for better gear, repeat for as long as it remains fun. I just keep returning to Palworlds CEO and wondering why no one else seemingly has the curiosity to ask, "what do people like, and can we make it?"

The young people in my life play Roblox, Fortnite, Subway Surfer, FIFA, Valorant and Fortnite. It really is those games and basically nothing else. When I was a kid the diversity of games we played was wide, even though I was a teen during the PS2/GameCube era people were still playing games as far back as NES and games on PC like Warcraft and Command and Conquer but I don’t hear about kids playing some of the key games from when I was younger like… - Street Fighter - MMO’s (particularly WOW guess MMO’s are dead) - Final Fantasy (back then Final Fantasy meant 6-10 but I never hear about anyone playing 11-16? The kids don’t care). - Resident Evil: Very popular because of the movies but yeah kids don’t care. The only AAA title that any kid I know was talking about was Last of Us 2 which they said was alright. I don’t see that same “whoa this is awesome! From kids when it comes to games now”. When I was a kid we had adverts of kids playing games and their hair was flying backwards and the character reaches out of the screen and pulls the kid into the TV and the narrator hyped up the game and then at the end it was like “Simpsons Hit and Run. Doh!” Or something like that. Games for the youngsters are like these social things, they play the game and voice chat about whatever and the game is secondary.

There is an even deeper level of self-destruction here. A cornerstone of Progressive thought is that there is no such things as 'quality' but all things of 'quality' are only seen that way because of how much resources went into the product/service. Thus something isnt "good" but the thing would be expensive or bougie. Yet here we have a new studio full of people who self-evidently wont want to lose their jobs - so theyre trying the best they can. With the financing and budget of one of gamings biggest companies (EA), pushing messages that the left think everyonr supports. And this steelman with everything going for them but the release window completely and totally fails. Leftism must only be popular certain times of the year, I guess.

Alot of projects released nowadays just have too big a budget for something that's not even guaranteed to be great/a big hit. GTA 6 is rumored to cost 1 billion dollars and yet I have full confidence that will make back double it's budget in just the first few days...

See, everyone and their mother knows what GTA is. If I was an investor, and they said that was their budget, I'd still be willing to throw some money at it. Because a title like that, even if it's utter dogshit once it releases, will still see a return on investment. But this mysterious pile of shit? I'd rather invest in actual shit, as that has more IRL practical applications then this failed art student college reject figurative horseshit!
