Okay I know, bring your pitchforks down! What I mean to say is it's not a TERRIBLE movie. More.. it's a terrible INCREDIBLES movie. Today we're comparing the two Incredible films together, and realising just what the sequel was missing. As at the end of the day, it was a pretty generic action plot. Shedding its skin of the messaging, heart, thrill and nuance that the original blessed us with in 2004.

Considering they copied the same plot structure for the sequel it would have been much better if they incorporated the 14-year gap between the movies into the plot. It could have started with the Underminer fight as a flash back and then it would skip 14 years to show how the characters changed (just like the first movie).

If the sequel come out 4 or 5 years after the original, it would have been acceptable. But the fact that it took 14 years and it takes no risks or even a bit of edge in maturity, it's very disappointing. EDIT: Thanks guys for giving me the most liked comment in this section!

The worst thing About this movie for me was my dad’s reaction.. my dad loves the first incredibles so much so he was super excited about the second one, but he didn’t like it. My dad is an Air Force vet who is a big family man, you can tell how much he related to Mr.Incredible, but the second movie made him a big man baby that gets jealous of his wife’s success and gets frustrated that he has to spend time with his kids. It was such a huge insult to the original Mr. Incredible’s arc and in a way to my dad. I Hate this movie.

I know! Thats just an insult to men in general and pushes stereotypes that a man will be jealous if his wife is more successful and/or that he should hate or view spending time with his family and kids as a burden or waste of time. Plenty of men love their families and want their wives to be just as successful of them. This isn't the 1600s where only men get to have jobs, lives, and success or that is seen as odd if a woman has those things. Like, come on.

I think the biggest issue with this movie is that Brad Bird, the writer/director of both Incredibles movies, doesn’t like making sequels. So when he went to make this, it was mostly because Disney wanted an Incredibles sequel. Whether Brad just wanted a good paycheck or didn’t want somebody besides him to write an Incredibles sequel, maybe both, or neither, it’s clear that it wasn’t because he actually wanted a sequel. I mean, look at the guy when he’s in interviews for this movie. He does not look happy to be there. And it shows through this movie with its lacking passion and creativity that made the original a classic. I’m sure this movie could have been worse, but it wouldn’t have gotten made in the first place if Disney wasn’t so ambitious to bank on the first Incredibles. And if the past five years or so have taught us anything about Hollywood, it’s that movies are better when the filmmaker wants it BEFORE the studio does.

It explains a lot. The villain didn't thematically make sense like Syndrome did, there was so much filler when the first movie was packed with character moments...plus, look back at Bird's filmography. The guy is a _phenomenal_ storyteller, but he has to...y'know, give a shit about that story first. There was an interview where he basically said "Disney had been pressuring me to make a sequel, but I couldn't come up with any new ideas that I thought would work or even liked. Eventually I just came up with _something_ because they were being relentless about a sequel." Which...yeah, explains a lot.

Actually, Brad Bird had always envisioned the sequel to be purely a role-reversal between husband/wife just as soon as he finished the first film according to his book. For him aging the characters doesn't particularly interest him as their powers are reflective to their given archetypes. If there was any reason for him to appear tired in those said interviews it's probably because he just finished an incredibly ambitious project where the studio cut a full year off from their production schedule. Alot of things that were precious to him were probably cut from this film, as he stated that there were many loose-ends during pre-production that he wished he had explored. I personally found this movie among my favorites from the 2010s era of Pixar, but I totally get how some people can have differing expectations for what would best follow up The Incredibles.

I kinda agree with these statements the most, as it’s very hard to believe that the cast and crew spent all those years making the sequel in the first place, wouldn’t make sense. Along with the fact that Disney had all that time to ask Brad about a sequel but they never did, so the question is: why try to make a sequel now when it’s already too little too late?

Fun fact: The 14 -year gap between Incredibles 1 and 2 was the longest waiting time between a Disney/Pixar movie and its follow-up. Finding Dory (2016)'s 13-year gap was the 2nd longest, Monsters University (2013) was the 3rd longest with a 12-year gap, and Toy Story 3 (2010) was the 4th longest with an 11-year gap.
@DanGamingFan2846

It was originally going to be a 15-year gap as a meta easter egg of Syndrome's line "You're too late, 15 years too late." But then _Toy Story 4_ needed a rewrite or something and _The Incredibles 2_ was pushed forward to release a year early. Which ruined the joke, and is probably a big reason for some of the film's faults.

But once she gets offered to become a hero again, she just runs off loving her new superhero life?!? Leaving her husband and kids behind just like Mr. Incredible did in the first movie???? It seems like every character acts like the first movie didn’t happen. Mr. Incredible learned a lesson by the end of the movie while Mrs. Incredible didn’t learn nothing. To me the biggest mistake of this Incredibles 2, is the same as lot of other nowadays productions: They don't take enough risks. They're trying so hard everytime to not shake the audience by showing and telling us things that will be generaly accepted. They usually end up with flat content, nothing too sharp, too surprising or else. Just like a lonely kid that want friends so bad that he end up not saying anything, scared of hurting anybody.

YESSS YESSS. I honestly think part of it is the "please everyone, no bad vibes, accept everything, challenge nothing" mindset especially found online is ruining a lot of media. Everything feels so safe and boring now, at least what's produced in the US. So many sequels to movies like this that are made over a decade later and probably by entirely different teams feel like a completely different company trying to make a sequel to a movie without having fully seen the original. I wanted to love the Incredibles 2, but I didnt. I'm so glad others see past the hype, I thought I was the only one. xD

Her whole goal is to KEEP supers illegal. Because of people like Mr. incredible and his family, public perception of supers was changing to be more positive, and she sees dependency on them to be a huge detriment. So, orchestrate a betrayal of the public's trust, reinforce their worries and fears about supers, keep them illegal and by her view keep them safer as a result. Biggest issue with it isn't really as much how she goes about it... But WHEN everything takes place. The sequel desperately needed to have at least a few year gap so that development of the kids' powers made sense and that public perception would have had more TIME to be a more perceivable threat to Evelyn's worldview. But she was being PROactive, not reactive. She didn't wait until they were fully accepted, she wanted to make sure that if and when they were, that she could pull the rug out.

Something I've considered before is how an Incredibles sequel could have done better than what was produced. An idea I had after considering it involved the simple question of: "What if Syndrome's gadgets made it to the public market?". Syndrome was defeated, but that doesn't mean that his company would just disappear, and whoever replaced Syndrome would do whatever they could to push the technology Syndrome had been hogging into financial endeavors. So, in the sequel, after however much time has passed, Syndrome's toys start becoming commercially available, giving Syndrome the last laugh from beyond the grave. Petty criminals who get a hand on this tech can use it to invalidate Supers like Mr. Incredible, and regular civilians can use this tech to become hero's to compete with these petty criminals. The future Syndrome talked about, where no one is super, has come to pass. Since making the company who sold the tech the big bad would be boring and obvious, the villain would instead rise from the new tech falling into the wrong hands. New villains make their debut, old veterans come out from retirement, and Bomb Voyage retires from being a mime to rival Mr. Incredible like the good old days. So, the story follows what the ramifications of that are, and how the Parr family responds.

When I saw the first teaser for the movie with Jack Jack, I was imagining different ideas for what the movie might be about. And an idea I really liked popped into my head. I thought maybe the movie would be a flash forward to when Jack Jack is either a teen or young adult, and he's the villain of the story. His extreme amounts of super powers and inability to control them himself as well as being too powerful for even his parents or siblings or other supers to fully contain him caused him to grow up disturbed. He's used to being feared, feeling guilty for his powers blowing up on everyone, and also getting his way without earning it because people want to appease him. Or maybe even the government forcibly detaining him and separating him from his family because he would continuously out the existence of supers to the world without meaning to, and also him being considered a major threat by the government. And the story is basically the Incredibles dealing with the betrayal/emotional drama of him going bad and them facing off against Jack Jack while trying to get him to turn back to the good side. It sounds like it would be an interesting idea to me, anyway. But even if they didn't go with that idea, I thought they would at least do a significant flash forward. Especially since the actors are so much older now. But yeah... We can see how that turned out...

I think that Pixar still has a chance to go with that idea, it would at least be nice to see him as a teenager, maybe Elastigirl & Mr. Incredible die of old age near the beginning of the movie, which is more of a Disney thing than a Pixar thing but it could still work imo considering that Pixar has explored topics related to death in past movies.

Man I would sooooo watch an hypothetical "The Incredibles 3" if the plot revolved about Jack Jack being abducted by the government, and we see him causing all sorts of havoc in the structure he's detained while the rest of the family tries to understand first who's responsible for the kidnapping and then going to his rescue. Maybe also uncovering a secret section of the government in which many more particularly dangerous supers are detained. If "The Incredibles 2" followed something like this whith the same serious tone of the first one it would have been a huge hit.

The biggest problem I have with this movie is, that it completely erases character progress. A family that was literally saving the world and working as a prefect unit? BAM, moving again, playing pretend again. Both parents back in hero business? BAM, once again one is doing the heroing and the other is stuck as a stay at home. Girl finally got the guy? BAM, nope, he doesn't remember that. Kids having grown into their power and helping along? BAM, kids back in school doing "exciting" school stuff. And no wonder they are frustrated with it, I am frustrated with it. Rather than a continuation of the story we get what feels like a live action remake. More "mature" and "serious", more "everyday struggle" than the Bond like flair of the original. The Bond like flair was a big selling point of the first one, the whole tone of the movie was set by it - weather it went with or against expectations set by the genre. And then we got this movie, that tries so hard to be a Nolan movie. And it is just wrong. It doesn't fit the ending of the first movie, so it rewrites it to what feels like a reset. It rewrites the world-building and character building done by its predecessor. And that sucks.

A super, a normal person...like she's almost twice the size of Mr. Incredible, who is a big guy and can't get any bigger without breaking the bounds of believable human normalcy. We're supposed to believe that these people can reasonably successfully pull off both a super and a civilian identity...my suspension of disbelief can only stretch so far. Not to mention she either is slow in the head or she gives off that impression, so presuming it's only a speech impediment and they're _not_ letting a mentally-incompetent person run around holding people's lives...she still gives off that appearance, which is not a good image by any means. And even casting image aside, how on earth is she going to deal with the media, or even communicating succinctly and clearly to police or other heroes? That is an important skill to have, especially when, you know, you're _holding people's lives_ in your hands. For the Owl, the talons could be gear, as the wings are. His face, though...mmm.

I still think the biggest mistake they made with the sequel was setting it right after the first one ended. I understand they wanted to finally show the Underminer fight, but even a time-skip after that would have helped immensely. Instead of feeling like they've grown with their audience the same way the characters in _Toy Story_ or _How To Train Your Dragon_ did, the characters have stayed completely static and have even regressed from when we last saw them 14 years earlier. And the Screenslaver plot makes them all look like completely dumbasses who learned literally nothing from what happened with Syndrome and just immediately fell for the same trick again. Even from a visual standpoint, the much more advanced and detailed animation looks completely out of place when compared to the original film, whereas it would have at least looked less jarring if it was set years later and the characters had visibly aged.

It feels like this with a lot of Disney and animated sequels in general. Rehash/retell the same story. The HORRID Disney live action remakes are another type of this imo. The characters don't age, change, learn, or progress anymore, its so annoying. I wish animated movies were treated more seriously in their story progression, especially when there is such a gap between films. The Incredibles story should have grown with its audience, but the characters and plot just felt like regressed rehashes of the first movie. Plus, Disney's obsession, especially during The Incredible 2's release, with crappy "twist" villains as obvious as the sun really didn't help either.

I did find it incredibly Terrible, mostly just by how... badly written it's... just as you said, there are a lot of really underwhelming elements in this movie that honestly don't mesh all that well together. The main villain motivation and reasoning behind her actions? Are not only dumb, but incredibly also stupid in how she approached it. This is a movie whose problem is basically focused on one point: Helen Parr... the first movie was Bob centered, yes, but not in a way that diminished the importance of the other characters, and in the end, the whole message was that Bob couldn't do it alone, but they as a family, as a unit, could do far more. The sequel? Let's empower Helen by diminishing the roles and development of the others in the process! Because it wasn't only Bob who seemed to be placed on a diminished role, but also the other characters as well. It was a movie that was, to me, more worried and centered on being bombastic and action filled movie, (The kind that at that point, has already inundated the market) than to tell a story. HISHE also made more creative use of the characters powers than this movie did, especially in how to solve the problem of the control glasses once it was discovered. I'm not afraid to say that this movie was bad, and often say so when asked what I think about it. This sequel was bad, really bad, and even worse, it was a lower tier superhero movie compared to others. And, as you've also said, instead of deconstructing the Superhero tropes as the first one did, this one fully embraced them which is why it feels so jarrying and different in tune. I for once, agree that the game is a far more apt sequel to be honest. Also, I would've feel that yes, a few years later would've changed many things in how things happened in the movie, for example, I would've liked to see them explore one of the glaring issues and weakeness of the original film, the Anti/Suppresing hero law. Yes, it's obvious that the good and law abiding Supers would obey, but... why did the villains obey the law as well... they're criminals, and if the government is basically handing them the world on a silver platter by making the people that can actually foil their plans and goals, illegal. WHY did they dissapear as well? WHY DID THE VILLAINS SUDDENLY DECIDE: HEY, I WILL NOW OBEY THE LAW! Syndrome clearly showed that, no, they didn't and they got rich and powerful to earn and build shadow organizations that governments didn't had a clue of. I would've liked the sequel to explore that, just how seamless the process was, and how strange/weird that criminal supers also dissapeared as well, did they? Or did they learned to hide better? More accustomed to do things behind the governments back, was it truly a natural thing to do? And, the damage on the civilians that Super fights tend to do, they're still there, just with the damage the underminer did, thing should've heated in the discussions of that world once again, because, so far, the villains supers were unnaturally quiet and passive until Syndrome launched a public attack. Dang, I mean, Evelyn should've grasped THAT point to hammer how much the anti-suppresing hero laws are needed, because for nearly a decade, probably more, that kind of damage or event hasn't come to pass. It would've been an interesting analysis as well of how much damage heroes do while trying to take down said villains. Why then, not also use heroes in more apt jobs that make good use of their abilities in their public personas? How are Supers created on that world? Syndrome seems to show that it's genetic, but he shows that even a crafty individual could become Super... What if, ironically, his goal of making everyone SUPER was actually a solution to their problems? There are just so many ways to explore the questions that were created on the first movie, and the second... does nothing to fully explore that completely, the movie is merely centered in how Helen is a badass heroine, while Bob struggles with parenthood and basically comes appart in a few days. And what they did to Violet and Dash... they feel just so... diminished in their roles, Dash feels even more childish than the first one, who feels asphixiated and frustrated that he cannot use his abilities and how the suppresion was affecting him, Violet just... feels bratty. Damn the whole "I'll stay here..." annoyed me the heck, because it could've been better written, for example, Violet realizing that as the oldest sibling, she also shares some responsability in the wellfare of the family. She realizing that while her parents are too busy fighting to protect them, she's literally and figuratively the shield for her siblings in the case something come to pass, she backing off to protect her siblings would've been an awesome development for her, as it would've expanded on the first movie issue with her feeling invisible, and Dash as well now that I think about it, they both suffered attacks of adults that wanted to literally KILL THEM months ago, and that... isn't talked about, at all... I feel that would've been far more potent theme to deal with, than "MY LOVE INTEREST DOESN'T REMEMBERS ME!" With how the childrens of Super, especially children that are Supers, cope with such an scenario. Agh, I'll just stop, because the more I analyse the sequel, the more frustrated I get at how much they missed the goal and the many, MANY excelent points they simply decided not to use, just to go with a more generic plot with the usual "SURPRISE VILLAIN" from them. Edited for Typos

Bob weirdly digressed as a character along with Violet kinda. Not to mention Helen brings up how hypocritical her actions in this film are to how she reacted to Bob in the first film but brushes them aside. This film desperately needed a time skip like how Toy Story 3 grew up with it's audience.

My big issue with this movie is that at the end of the first movie, when the Underminer rises, The Incredibles family put on their masks, including Jack-Jack as well! When Jack-Jack wore the mask, that would mean that the family already found out that he had his own super powers, and the fact that the second movie retcons that aspect is really disappointing. :(

Also the motel makes no sense. After the Underminer Rick Dicker says he can't relocate them again and can only put them in a motel for two weeks since Syndrome destroyed their old house and the Supers Relocation Department is shutting down. But the Underminer took place three whole months after that. Where were they living all that time, and why hadn't they been relocated already during that time period before the SRD shut down?? And more of a nitpick than anything, but why was everybody, including the ever-cautious Elastigirl, so gung-ho and confident about suiting up immediately to fight if supers weren't accepted? The entire first film end, from the celebration of the citizens when they defeated the Omnidroid to the freaking...color palette and mood tone and the family demeanors themselves as happy and whole (i.e., free to be themselves and thus just better for it in general) at the track meet to confident gearing for a fight afterwards...it all points to the implication that supers are either legal outright OR socially accepted to the point they're not really worried about possible repercussions of hero-ing. And yet those repercussions are very clearly alive and well in the second film... james said it well: the second film really is disconnected from the first.

It's ironic Bob rants about mediocrity in the first movie, only for the sequel to be mediocre, I think the Incredibles should have remained one film, for everything was wrapped up, there was no need for a follow up, but because it made money, Disney and Pixar wanted more cash for the audience.

I enjoyed this movie when it came out, but my mom, who saw the original one on cinema with me back in 2004, didn't like it. I won't lie, Helen's first fight with the Screenslaver is my favorite part in the film. The simple line: "Find anything?" Cutting through the silence, immediately followed by the loud bang of the closing door and the bright flash of the swirling lights that immediately spike your adrenaline and let you know: This was a trap. Then there's the way he immediately follows up with the electric baton, shocking Helen's limbs into submission while she's completely stunned and overwhelmed, letting the audience know that not only is this villain capable of capitalizing on the element of surprise, but that he's competent enough to have studied Elastagirl's abilities and how certain weapons might affect them. Helen starts gaining momentum in the fight, prompting her assailant to turn and run, activating a detonator on the way out of the room, a clear contingency that once again shows his competence. The following chase only further bolsters this: the way he bangs on the doors without slowing to cause a pileup of innocent bystanders to get in Elastagirl's way, his acrobatic movements, the way he occasionally turns to sucker punch Elastagirl, momentarily stunning her, all leading to an epic leap from the building, which explodes in the background, deatroying all evidence of his hideout's existence. I probably skipped a few things or explained a few things poorly, but basically what I'm trying to say is that I feel like the movie would have been better if the Screenslaver was an actual person and the true villain of the film. His monologue was actually pretty compelling in my opinion, and it felt like a waste to have such an interesting scene which showed a villain with actual competence be wasted in such a way.

The goofy, bizarrely-proportioned supers at the end are antithetical to the very concept of the Incredibles: superheroes if they were normal people. Yes, the first movie had many over-the-top ideas (giant robots, etc), but they were always presented in a way that made them easy to believe, and the most important elements were the more grounded aspects of the story. The new characters don't even look human, which clashes terribly with the mostly realistic look of the older characters. The other vital idea of the first film (that it featured a family of superheroes rather than a team or an individual) is also dropped in favor of an Elastigirl spin off duct-taped to a short film about Bob learning to dad, which hurts both the action choreography and the plot. Speaking of Bob, they also assassinated if not his character, then certainly his character growth. His whole arc in the first film was learning to value and work with his family instead of trying to do everything himself, which involved learning to be less selfish. Suddenly in this movie he's forgotten all that and is acting even less mature than he did before said discarded character arc. The twist villain is also very predictable and lacks the self-aware charm of Syndrome. Not only that, but the commentary on screen and media use, as well as its personified representative (Screen Slaver) doesn't seem relevant or well connected to the evil twist villain lady (can't recall her name) in addition to being poorly fleshed out and very surface-level. Also when I saw it they put a weird kind of clip/introduction before playing the movie, which featured cast and crew basically saying, "Look, we know it's been a long time since the last one but that's because making movies is hard, OK?" It was honestly kind of cringey and I'm not sure why they felt the need to add it.

YES! Thank you, you just said exactly what I've been thinking, but better. Especially about the new supers, which, mind you, I like, I just do not see some of them working in reality. Specifically Brick and Reflux, and probably Screech also but that depends on how much of his very weird face is real. Him and Brick are...problematic for normal covers, and Reflux is a complete liability on the field. He's in no physical shape and has no way to get one any time soon with his age and lack of one in the past, and his powers don't make up for that in any way. He's not a veteran that has the head knowledge, either. He's going to die the first time anything serious comes up. Also, Voyd needs to drop the dyed hair. It's pretty, but gives away a secret identity. Presuming that it's even dyed, because if it's natural then I have a much bigger issue here...and I fear it is, because a lot of other background new supers also have neon hair of some sort and what are the chances they ALL decided to dye -_- As you said, their whole...abnormal appearances are contrary and inconsistent to the established concept of superheroes in this universe...well, you said it all! And unrealistic... I would also like to add that all the character development of the first film was erased, too. It wasn't just family-focused, family-valuing Elastigirl deciding to leave them behind to go solo, or Mr. Incredible losing his intelligence, competence, and the family closeness he earned in the original movie, but Violet lost her confidence and went back to being shy and moody again (except worse) and Dash completely forgot any maturity or consideration that was learned before and become an obnoxious, one-note annoyance that felt like a caricature rather than a real boy. (Also a nitpick, but I didn't like his hair. It felt too polished and pretentious for a ten-year-old, like a college boy trying to be handsome for dates. Didn't fit him at all.) (Overly outwardly polished and inwardly substantially pretentious as a description actually fits this film very well, now that I think about it.) As for the villain, I am massively disappointed that the Screenslaver turned out to not be the real one. I was so hyped for him and he seemed and awesomely bad real threat, and he could have been a _great_ commentary on today's digital obsession too in the right writer's hands. Perhaps not as timeless and universal as the ordinary/extraordinary dichotomy from Syndrome, but still a relevant, good, and valid message in the present world. But no. We got discount-pale-ripoff-Syndrome instead. The whole sequel is like a watered-down version of the original (which was an opinion I held before, but wow this video really highlights it).

What is the point of just seeing the characters again if they are just going to repeat the same story again? If you just want to see the characters, watch incredibles 1. A sequel needs a reason to exist, and this movie doens't have any new idea or contribution to give to the story of the incredibles.

I LOVE the Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer game! I played it since it released on GameCube. It really is what Incredibles 2 should’ve been. I thought the Underminer was gonna be the main villain, yet the fight they hyped up for 14 years ends in 5 minutes to introduce a new villain. Why? I don’t get it. So yeah, the game is more canon to me than the 2nd movie. Great review! 👍🏻

Random cool way they could have done frozone’s intro better. Instead of him just walking up to them, take advantage of the fact that theyre by a pool. Bob and Helen are at one end and frozone walks in from the other. We see the pool freezing over as Bob and Helen look up then the camera cuts to Lucius walking on top of the water using his ice powers. Would have been a more interesting way to reintroduce him, first cluing the audience in on who he is by showing the pool freezing and having them make the connection.

I feel the exact same way. This plus toy story 4 make it obvious that pixar isn't good at making sequels anymore. Or atleast sequels to their classic films. Disney as a whole doesn't put to much effort into they're remakes and sequels I.e. frozen 2 and every live action remake they've ever made. Constantly making references to the originals without trying to make the new ones memorable.

The Incredibles 2 is what every Jurassic park sequel film is to the original. The first movie was a masterpiece and in no regard are the other films bad at all. They contain a lot of good practical effects and cgi that only improved over the vast period of time between the first film and the most recent, but if you look deeper, the story portrayed in every sequel film just isn't on par with the original. Some events within the film just don't fit and aren't characteristic of the franchise at the point in time of it's conception. Agree? (Not a 1 to 1 comparison but similar nonetheless).

This is a very good comparison. I didn't HATE The Incredible 2. It would be pretty good actually if it was a standalone film with nothing else to compare it to, but since it is a sequel to such an awesome first film, it had big shoes to fill and just couldn't quite fit them. Not a terrible film, definitely not on its own, but looks much worse riding on the coattails of its predecessor.

The biggest mistake was separating the family / focusing on elastic girl. The end of the first movie the family was united as hero team and the first thing the sequel does is break it. Bird was very hesitant to make it so it took him a long time to even begin, but I'm glad he did. The characters move and make decisions in a new scenario for the family - they have to come out of hiding, in their own minds. I just watched both films back to back and although the first one is close to being a perfect film, this one revisits the characters in a way that shows more of their struggle than before. I love that and I really enjoyed it.

For your next video about a cancelled animated movie, look into the adaptation of Mort by Terry Pratchett that Disney was apparently working on before Moana. I only recently found that piece of information while looking through the Discworld wiki and I was surprised to hear about it since I've never heard anyone discuss it. Although, given Disney's track record of getting their hands on any franchise they can, I'm not convinced that the project will never see the light of day.

I actually loved the sequel, and it’s also very relatable because I live in a family of 5. Two parents, and two siblings. I am male and I’m the middle child, I have an older sister and a younger brother so this movie is like us ;( There were also other coincidences that made us like the movie more, such as “MATH IS MATH!” Which directly relates to when my dad was helping me with math homework a few days or weeks before the movie’s release. That’s why we loved the movie so much.

The first movie does its best to set up the characters and the plot, each scene feels purposeful to get us to care and keep us engrossed. Yet, the sequel just has things happen just because. It's not trying to sell us on the heart of the story anymore, just point a to b. It's clear Brad Bird was forced into this with a hefty paycheck. Just to get the job done, I don't think it's awful, just very disappointing.

The LEGO game adds some improvements to the story of the second movie. They don't change a lot of the central story, but due to the game being either single or two player one of the new superheroes always goes with Ilastigirl on her missons so you see more of their powers. They also make it clear that Krushauer's power isn't super strength like it looks, but actually telekenisis that he uses for crushing things. It would have been cool to address that is what his power is. They only show it during the party where he shows Winston that he can crush a soda can without touching it. It's a cool way of doing a type of super strength without giving them super strength. I think the owl man has a sonic scream since his name is Screech, but they don't really show it much. They have some interesting powers, but don't do much with them.

Definitely a disappointing movie, if compared to the first one. A movie that MANY of the fans wanted a sequel of, compared to all the other movies that didn't need a sequel, or ended in a way that people were satisfied with being a one off movie. They really would've benefitted from just doing a "X" years time skip, having the first 11 mins explain what happened after the Underminer, the situation of the Supers, etc etc, and then We have Violet as a young adult, probably in University, working a job, dating, etc., Dash in High School, going through his teenager years and the chaos that that follows, Jack-Jack at the age that Dash was, possibly coping with his powers that are probably getting out of control? Instead of a Villain who's trying to make Supers illegal, when they already were, they could just have a group of Supers who start their own organization(The League of Super Villians or something like that), run by a Non-Super who's manipulated other Supers to working for them in order to convince them that THEY don't need to adhere to any laws, because THEY are above the law. Probably at this time, the military could get involved and have an Anti-Super task forced created, hunting down ANY and ALL Supers to eliminate them for good. Thus, putting Jack-Jack center stage, because of how unpredictable his powers are, causing friction between the family or something; Civil War style, I guess? I dunno. It would be fun to have seen the many ideas and concepts, they could've came up with during the development time. The only scenes in Incredibles 2 that were on par, or nearly on par, was Elastic Girl's Motobike chase, because just how creative it was on using her body, and how it effected the bike; really cool! Then I'd say, Jack-Jack's fight with the Racoon, showing off most of the powers he has, in a humorous way, but also fairly creative too. Everything else, the movie really just felt...dry to me; you could easily tell the age of the VAs, as they weren't as energetic as they once were, another reason as to why they should've just did a time skip.

Guess I'm the only one here that thought this movie was genius. I thought I was going to find it really disappointing after 14 years or the rose colored lenses were going to come off, but it was amazing how satisfied I was and I love the intro sequence with it picking up right where it left off as if 14 years didn't pass. All the nods back to the first movie was a nostalgia trip I really appreciated. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that Mr. Incredible was being a big baby about having to take care of his family, but I also understood that it's just part of his attention seeking personality. Your comment on the sound design was strange. Of course you'd here more bass with giant boulders being thrown against a mountain, but why would you expect more bass tones with a bike being flung by Elasta Girl? If anything, the sound design was spot on for someone who is more graceful then Mr. Incredible. Even Jack Jack's bond theme to catch the thief was based on the whole "the Raccoon looks like the burglar on TV" motif that the scene was going for. It would have been weird to switch to a grand orchestra. The first movie was all about their powers which was great when we were kids, but now we are adults and seeing supers deal with normal problems like public image, insured buildings, and trying to pass a law to fight for supers being back on the streets seems like a movie that grew up with its audience. How do praise the first movie for having done so much in the first 40 minutes and then complain about a bunch of plot stuff the 2nd movie did in 30 minutes? I agree there were a lot of cool things that had a "wow factor" in the first movie that kept me on the edge of my seat, but the mystery of the strange she was chasing still captured me and kept me curious the whole time. Even the villain has a better plot and plan then the original villain. The original villain just wanted to become super even with no powers because he was rejected by Mr. Incredible. The new villain framed someone while playing the good guy and pulling strings in the background, came up with technology that brainwashed supers into becoming terrorists ensuring that the new law her brother was petitioning for would never see the light of day and further tarnishing the reputation of supers forever. That's a very elaborate plan. I definitely agree that the fights weren't anywhere near the level of creativity of the first. I guess I just loved this movie. It definitely wasn't better than the first, but after 14 years it just hit all the right spots to be completely satisfying.

In terms of music, I would've liked to have different themes for the different powers used. For Elastigirl, have more drawn out sections with the jazz and then bombastic flares for brass. Violet could have a softer tune that has some brass when she lands a blow or shows herself. Dash of course would have a fast paced energetic tune to accompany him. And for Jack Jack, why not have a different theme for each time he uses his powers. Have the fire be some sorta orchestral singing like in the short, have the lasers be a bit more punctual when he just fires single shots, multiplying could have multiple levels, telekinetic could be more experimental for the movie. These are just off the top of my head but I just think that it could've built upon the great score of the first movie by introducing new themes to the characters

But then again do to the rushed production it had behind the scenes, they had Infinity War that year and yet they decided no Pixar film during the summer time wasn't something they could handle. Pixar, take as much time as you need with your projects, or end up with disappointing results as this. Like I said, it's not a terrible film that I wouldn't mind sitting through again, but this fourteen long waiting film deserved more justice.

Something I really hate about Incredibles 2 is how saturated and vibrant it looks. One of the best things about the first one was how it juxtaposed it’s lively animation with washed out color grading. It gave it a rougher feel and it also made the characters look more natural. Incredibles 2 just makes everyone look like a typical squeaky clean Disney character.

The worst thing about this movie is that it subverted my expectations in a bad way. I honestly thought while watching that Bob Odenkirk's character was going to be the bad guy, and that the big twist was all the heroic stuff Elastigirl did was set up by him in order for supers to be legal again with the moral dilemma being he was willing to lie and how far he was willing to go in order for that to happen, also the concept that was only touched on in this movie being with supers around people would rely on them instead of relying on themselves. It felt way more in line with what the original Incredibles did with putting a twist on the superhero genre itself, but what we got instead was probably the stupidest villain plan I've ever seen in a Pixar movie with a less likable character and moreover another forgettable Pixar sequel. Incredibles 2 isn't technically terrible... but it sure as hell isn't any good either.

There doesn't appear to be any kind of struggle in the story, a moment when the characters actually might lose at some point. Remember a few moments from the first movie when this happened? Mr. Incredible against the first Omni-droid, he struggles at it since he hasn't done hero work in so long. Dash and Violet against the mercenaries, they struggle with figuring out how to best evade the mercenaries. Syndrome kidnapping Jack-Jack, the Incredibles struggle in that they don't know what to do that won't endanger Jack-Jack. That struggle, that thought of they might not be able to win, that gives the situation depth and makes it feel real.
