To be fair, I'd say fewer than half the Caps fans know the "O" is a reference to the O's either. A lot of them are just following what everyone else is doing. There is one super awesome guy that insists on shouting "V" after everyone else shouts "O", even though nobody has ever joined him in almost a decade of doing it. At least he is persistent... But, even outside the Caps games, Marylanders love screaming the "O" during the anthem no matter how solemn the occasion, which is why everyone else calls it the "Baltimoron" chant. A better (and much newer) tradition here in DC is each player getting to pick their own unique goal song. They started that a while back, and it is always exciting when a rookie or new player gets their first goal and we get to hear their song for the first time.

Agreed, great tradition. As a Canadian, I'm particularly touched by this. As an additional nod to the Canadian influence on the sport, Seymour Knox the founder of the Sabres opted for the Canadian spelling of SabREs versus the American SabERs. Could call the spelling another Buffalo tradition.

Since he included specific singers for the anthem, I think he also should’ve at least brought up Rick Jeanneret. He was the announcer when my dad was growing up in northwestern PA, which got him super into hockey, and he was the announcer for me growing up in SC. I love Buffalo simply because he was the one who really got me into hockey. I’m sad that he won’t be around to see the Sabres win the Stanley Cup, and i think every Sabres fan thinks the same.

Missed one tradition with the Blackhawks, and one that is found throughout professional, college, juniors, and has made its way into other sports. The goal horn. It was first used in the 1973 Stanley Cup finals against the Montreal Canadiens. Former owner Bill Wirtz took the boat horn from his yacht and installed it in the old Chicago Stadium. Every time the Hawks scored, the horn would sound. Birthed one of the greatest traditions in hockey.

The "O Say Can You See..." thing during the National Anthem came from nearby Baltimore Orioles by local taxicab driver, and devoted fan, "Wild Bill" Hagy in the late 1970s. Baltimore is where the Nat'l Anthem was started. Any Mid-Atlantic sports fan does this.

Another big tradition that is traced back to the Islanders is one of the biggest. The Islanders were the 1st team to grow out their playoff beards during playoff runs. Now, every team does it. For some reason Wikipedia (well they are not always right) says that it was started by the Red Wings in the mid 80s, but the Islanders were doing it during their dynasty years from 1980-1983. Butch Goring is the one that actually started the tradition.

As a Washington Capitals fan I will mention the "O!" chant was there long before Ovechkin. It was also used in reference to Olie Kolzig, as some fans even took it one step further and yelled out "OLIE!" instead of "O!"
@TheStafman97
@TheStafman97 7 ай бұрын
It’s older than Ollie even. It’s a DMV tradition that started for the Baltimore Orioles
@cleech74
@cleech74 6 ай бұрын
@@TheStafman97Was going to make this comment. The “O!” is from when the Star Spangled Banner is played before Orioles home games, and is fitting since Francis Scott Key wrote it while on a boat, just outside of Baltimore’s harbor. The tradition probably carried over to the Caps to honor Olaf Kolzig, then Ovechkin. The Baltimore Skipjacks also had some great traditions, which was an AHL team that once had parent teams of The Pittsburgh Penguins (during the mid 80’s), and then for a few seasons with the Capitals in the late 80’s. Sadly, the team was moved to Portland, Maine, due to financial difficulties. The Skipjacks had a great “old-time hockey” styled song that was played when a goal was scored. The song climaxed with the crowd singing the verse, “For Baltimore, and Maryland , every Skipjacks fan will shout, FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!!!” The verse is very similar, and lifted from the Baltimore Colts NFL team fight song, played by the marching band after a touchdown. Lastly, the Skipjacks started the game with a “Fire on Ice” theme, where they put an arched wire by the rink entrance, and when the team’s starting lineup was announced, they lit the half-hoop wire on fire, as they players skated onto the rink passing underneath it. With the lights turned off in the arena, it was a pretty cool effect. As a young teenager, and a fan who went to a handful of games each season, I was disappointed to see them leave Baltimore. Still a Caps fan, and it was a magical moment to see them finally win one, and Ovie getting to hoist the Cup, as well.

Another Washington Capitals tradition is the goal siren. Since the team was formed, a siren would sound when the team scored - instead of a goal horn. They would also light red and blue rotating lights like on police cars. The operator would control how long the siren would sound. For important goals (like overtime or late playoff goals), the operator would sometimes let it run for a full minute. These days, they do use a goal horn, but they still sound the siren, too. If you listen carefully, you'll hear it in the background along with the horn.

I'm a lifelong Blackhawks fan, and the national anthem is something else. I was at the game on January 7th against the Flames, and the crowd was quiet during the Canadian anthem. But during the American anthem, everyone went wild and it gives me goosebumps every time. Even just thinking about it can give me goosebumps. Also Chelsea Dagger! The crowd will usually sing along after goals and wins, and I happen to know the lyrics by heart myself. Plus after wins, Sweet Home Chicago plays, but last time I went it was played on the organ.

They also gave fans yellow signs painted with a black shark fin to wave when the song played,at the start of a power play. They also had signs in the team colors that read "HEY!",which the fans waved around for goals, because they used "Rock And Roll Part II" by Garry Glitter,and the song became popular all over the NHL (although "Party Hard" by Andrew WK is so much better,imo)

One tradition that probably controversial is the Rangers fans whistling to "Let's go, Band" but chanting "Potvin Sucks". It's a bit played out TBH

The O with the Capitals goes to the Baltimore Orioles. Fans there shout "O's" during that part of the song. As a young kid I thought it was fans warming up saying "Ohhhh" for when a shot missed.

Yeah I was surprised that he didn't have the Towel Man counting the goals. Also being in St. Louis all sporting events have an organist that will always play "Here Comes the King" paying homage to Annheaisuer Busch. I never knew it wasn't a staple sport song til I went somewhere else. Such a true St. Louis tradition.

For the Senators, they share a tradition with the Maple Leafs, the one of the giant Canadian flag during the anthems. Tsunami by DVBBS & Borgeous has been the power play song for lord knows how long, Song 2 by Blur can almost be called tradition for how long it's been used as their goal song too.

Not sure if it’s exclusively the Bruins, but I think the best Bruins tradition is the ‘shirts off our backs’ ceremony. After the final regular season home game, the Bruins will bring out winners of a season ticket holders(?) raffle and every player, including those out with injury or scratched, will take off their jersey, sign it, and give it to a fan

the kraken one made me think of one that Montréal does I don't know if another team does the same but when the Habs at home have the first star, the player goes around the ice and throw 3 puck to the fan (a bit like the kraken with the seafood) Also, with the Habs, during the first game, I think, all the players gets to hold the torch and the captain is the last to hold it. he then goes in the middle and bend down to have the torch touch the ice for a fire animation start from the middle and go everywhere on the ice

Even got to kiss it twice. I will say I was like a kid on Christmas morning every time. It doesn't get old. The greatest trophy in sports.
