This is the video I needed. I was trucking the last ten years. OTR the last couple years and teamed the first couple years of my career. Recently lost everything and saw your video ready to roll. I gotta disagree with you about the DOT & MC number. Especially if you’re traveling from state to state. But in some cases you can ride under the dispatching company your hauling for. Most load board companies won’t mess with you without an active DOT & MC number. Last but not least, if you get pulled over by a Dudley do right police officer and/or DOT office can expect to receive multiple fines and possibly points on your driving record. It’s always best to stay within compliance with the motor carrier regulations and laws.

You're welcome to disagree but if you were turly a pro in this business you would know that vehicles under 10k gvw do not need an MC or dot number. If you're planning to load yourself and get access to load boards then yes you do need one but if you're just a driver getting loads from a dispatcher and vehicle is under 10k gvw you do not need anything and no officer or dot inspector etc will do anything to you for that. I've been pulled over plenty of times in various states by state patrol and our vehicles are not under any dot compliance.

If you want to be the capt of your own ship and run under your own authority, you most definitely need a dot/mc number.. Carrier packets specifically ask for your credentials and if you don't provide that information it will show up as "failed" and you won't get a load.. You can run under someone else's credentials and be a contactor leased on to another company, but until you have your own authority you aren't an "owner operator".. I dont care who says you don't need a dot/mc number if your van gvwr is under 10001 pounds, these companies WILL NOT fuck with you without a dot/mc number... If you don't believe me then you can go try and see for yourself.. JS

This is a big reason I haven't taken the plunge into the box truck world. When I was working at Harbor Freight Tools, I met many people outfitting their new trucking businesses with tie downs and other tools. Every one of these customers of mine had at least a spouse to run the paper side of the business. I am finding that by cost per cu ft of cargo space, small, pre-owned box trucks are cheaper than Sprinter class vans. Like you point out, they must have DOT and MC numbers. Is it possible to use the DOT and MC numbers of carriers with which owner-operators would lease onto?

Yes if you lease on with a power unit you can be under that carriers logos and MC.

lol....youre defiantly entitled to your own opinion. But when you have a direct load you dont have time to stop, bid freight, print ppwk, sign brokers agreements, sign rate cons, bill, etc etc. You are welcome to load yourself, I already said some people try and then come under someone else's wing because its not worth it.

Sure it can be done, but is it worth it? That’s the question. Efficiencies can be accomplished through a structured organization/team that make it well worth while to let those other tasks be handled by those who wake up every day to focus on just those tasks.

to get freight with brokers you cant even sign their online packet if you dont have at least 1 power unit...but you keep doing you. if its sliding and its working for you keep doing it. big brokers we deal with those are the rules...maybe small basement sitting ones dont care but thats the general rule when youre dealing with brokers who move 20+ million dollars worth of expedited freight every year.

As far as your reply about brokers and other stuff in the video, I did not comment on it because it is the same as I have experienced, and therefore, I agree with what you are saying. @Eagle-Xpress I will add, though diminishing others does not make you bigger. Your reply infers I can only deal with basement dwellers, and by extension, I am one. It's not cool. Everybody starts at the bottom. It is one of the problems in this industry. Many people think they should or can start at the top. Yes, I am a new carrier, and yes, that does limit me to smaller brokers, but it is not a reason to not begin. At one time, even the great and powerful Eagleexpress was also limited.

Since we are independent contractors, why aren't the initial/original rate confirmations given/shared with us? It is said that by Law, if the original contract is altered/partial etc, that contract/confirmation is now unlawful. Why don't they/the originators want us to see the original contractual numbers?

@@Eagle-Xpress Gotta remember, there's a lot of skimming and negotiating fuel surcharges on the original rate confirmation, then pocketed by the brokers. Huge issue here. That's our negotiated fuel surcharge money, not the broker's.

@@Axel-Live Per mile, Independent contractors. Too late. It's a nationwide fraud issue, already being litigated. FMCSA is already on it. Example; If the broker negotiates a fuel surcharge for the person paying for fuel... which is ...THE O/O INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR DRIVER! Why would the broker or carrier literally cut that fuel surcharge item out, then give the driver an abbreviated cut and paste rate confirmation?! Why would they do that? Why? Because they are stealing the fuel surcharge from the driver responsible for fuel. Anyway, this is old news, already being addressed.

Hey you're info on MC# for cargo owner operator incorrect. U just need to bring your vehicle info proving that you just have a cargo van atleast in Texas that is the way it is.

I already had my Audit by DOT..all I had to do is provide my van info..I put 0 for power unit...I think u might want to check into it..

Yeah he just lying to get people to sign up for his carrier company. You just have to apply correctly - if you don't have a power unit they will put 0 and you won't have to do all the extra logging because it's not required for vehicles under 26000 lbs

Who told you that you need a "big truck" /"log book truck" 4:09 (26k gvwr) on your MC authority to keep it? You can get an electronic log device ELD, and you are actually required to get one if you do more than 100miles 8x a year.

Not sure where you got that idea from but if your unit it not over 10k gvw you do not need log books for it therefore it's not considered a power unit so you will not keep your MC and DOT number after your first dot audit.

You have to make money and charge cargo van operators please look into it call your state auditor, not the state police state auditor and make sure if you don’t have a commercial license plate and you’re under 10,000 pounds and you don’t have a commercial license or hazmat license then you don’t qualify for that programcheck it out please.

Ive met alot of people with cargo van having there numbers and not having a truck. Idk where this info came from probably outdated? But yeah people with their own numbers and just a single cargo van run less miles and make more money.

I don't understand why they require a cargo van(10k lbs) to run dot/mc numbers and then would penalize you for not having a bigger truck? And if I understand correctly a cargo van requires same insurance as a semi truck?? Seems like they want to keep cargo vans under their thumb but it doesn't make sense

Just commercial insurance is required to cover cargo and liability. Mc and DOT numbers are not required for cargo vans because we're under 10k gvw

Sorry I didn't see that you had replied. What's confusing with need for dot authority is that I thought I read in the dot requirements that if you haul materials between states you need the authority. I understood that to mean even in a van under 10k gvw. That's where I was getting confused

That is correct, if youre looking to have an active mc and dot after your audit you do need to have at least 1 power unit, power unit is a truck that holds a log book and is over 10k gvw

To have access to load boards if you're planning to load yourself you need MC ND dot numbers. But if you sign on with a carrier lease on then you do not and are covered under carriers Umbrella of mc and DOT. But to keep and MC and DOT you need at least one big truck that uses log books.

If you're over 1001 pounds, yes, you are required to have an MC, DOT, ELD, and medical card. Then, when you get over 26001, it's another ballgame. Now, you have to add other things to your list.

Yes since ur under 10k gvw u don't need MC and DOT numbers. To have access to load boards you do need MC and DOT numbers. And to have access to good expediting boards you need to have a fleet of vehicles....not just a cargo van. Also to keep an mc and DOT number you need to have at least one power unit.... That's a truck that's over 10l gvw that runs under log books.

Nope. Its a short van we dont work with them. Must be an extended van with at least 144" long cargo space length inside. Thats our minimum standard.

It will probably cause high insurance rates and high interest rates if you're going to be financing a vehicle. We try not to work with felon drivers. As aot of times we pick and deliver from places that run drivers backround.

I can tell you one thing. I have ten years in trucking and thought of Cargo van but seen guys online say rent a truck from someplace. Well if it was as easy as that then guys with experience would all rent a truck then build your business. I think this man has a great platform for cargo van.

@@Eagle-Xpress I think the misinformation is how you talked is really broad general terms. While most cargo vans don't need numbers , the ones over 10k do and will need to runs logs. You don't need all that back office support to be successful, I do it all on my own. As I grow I will utilize support services though. New entrant audit does not require you to bring anything anywhere, it's all on line and logs are not part of it. There are so many nuances to the laws of CMVs that people need to do their own research and not rely on one youtube video.

Not true the new entry program for cargo van operators if you’re operating under 10,000 pounds you do not have to do a DOT physical none of that the new laws for the cargo van operator on the 10,000 pounds look into it look into the new program and when you do it, you file your MMC 150 or something I think that’s what it is and you just say please remove me from the New program and you will be removed. I’m a witness to it. I’ve been audited by the state auditor and you shouldn’t have to go through all of that and I did go through it for my first year now I don’t have to go through it anymore. I have a letter to prove it and ever so he’s telling you some information that’s old today, unless you have hazmat or commercial license and a commercial license plate you do not have to worry about that so look it up. I’m the proof I believe the state auditor knows more than the state police.

If you want access to all the load boards, the requirement for that is at least 1 power unit. One power unit is a log book unit that's over 1pk gvw... Without that and log book you don't get in. Nothing is Old or outdated. It's simple info.

Then yes u do but u will also need at least 1 log book truck to keep your MC and DOT number with the dot. And also to be able to fill out broker packets you need at least 1 power unit which is a truck over 10k gvw.
