It's honestly mind blowing how interested I am on a review of a show I never even heard of

I love how he didn't even mention the horrrible CGI

Naomi is like a when a bunch of robots decided to write a story and thinks the main character is all about power

I've been noticing this trend with "strong" female characters. The writers either don't want to or aren't allowed to let women struggle and just give them the powers they need to win the day to make them seem "super." It makes them uninteresting and when people naturally stop watching or review it poorly, they people behind the show/movie will claim it's misogyny and that "men hate strong women" when in reality we just hate poorly written characters with no flaws regardless of gender.

Never doubt the CW writers in their ability to make a show worse than what you are imagine. I feel like it happens so much it should be its own law like Murphy's Law.

This show is like Smallville if it was written by people who automatically think Superman is nothing more than his powers and can use them as easily as he breathes from the instant he gets them. Smallville isn't perfect, and I don't even like Superman, but that show is a masterpiece compared to this, by the sound of it.

Please tell me that effect of Naomi flying wasn’t in the actual show, because it looks terrible.

You know, the original Naomi comic is also not very good for a lot of the reasons that you are mentioning, but one of the only things about the book I actually enjoyed was that Naomi had two loving adopted parents. Her dad turned out to be from Rann, sent to assassinate D because they're people were at war. But then he met his wife and decided to go AWOL. Then they found out they couldn't conceive children, so they keep Naomi when she shows up as a baby. They had NOTHING to do with Naomi's parents being killed.

4:16 wait a second, is this the first time she uses her ability to fly ?! If yes, then it’s automatically the most funny moment of the show. Imagine FLYING for the first time with your own powers while making a face expression like you’re stuck in a traffic jam and forgot your phone at home 😂

Its basically all the CW shows combined into one entity that doesn't make any sense since Naomi is an uninteresting OC as far as I heard. Its so bad that not even the people shitting on it was enough to keep it from getting canceled after 1 season. Who knows, Gotham Knights might end up the same way.

I literally had to hide how I truly felt about the show around my mom because she refused to see any flaw that had a black woman as the protagonist and would've came after me if I did regardless of the reason.

This show is a dishonor to the late legend Dwayne McDuffie’s name.

Can we please get some more female characters who are strong but also realistically flawed? Naomi McDuffie reads like a fanfiction original character. Also, this show is an insult to the McDuffie name. That man created Vergil Hawkins/Static and shaped the mythos of the multiple Ben 10 series. I hope his ghost isn't around to watch this.

The only way this show could even be slightly redeemed is if it ended with her travelling into the Superman and Lois universe and Tyler Hoechlin's Superman just went "Nah, we don't want any of this." and used his super breath to blast her back through the portal.

To be fair, she has all these powers in the comics. She's a powerful character, the show just has HORRIBLE writing.

The two evil parents just confound me even more when they explain, "They thought we were crazy. No one believed us." SERIOUSLY? No one even considered the theory that the 29 GODLIKE PEOPLE would be able to fix the devastating world-ending disaster that birthed their powers? REALLY?

This is proof there is actually proof that so many powers is not cool actually. Like not just in bad writing but in good writing too. Like if it's in good writing, too many powers always overwhelms the character with them. In bad writing it overwhelms all of the people trying to enjoy the media

The "WRITERS" of this show also don't take the opportunity that comes with writing a character with so much power- having the character having difficulties with controlling their power, to the point that they start to be afraid of them, and this can lead to some interesting character development. But no, it's just mary sues all the way nowadays...what a shame.

About the whole invulnerability ability and how it breaks the show, there is another show I watch called Monkie Kid and the main character got the same powers on top of being a gary sue. But the difference is, In the FIRST EPISODE, the show takes away that ability because of how overpowered it is and actually makes the character struggle a bit. You can't write a good, compelling character if they literally can't get hurt.

Naomi the comic book character was created only for the cw show. they went into production together the first DC and CW team work simultaneously, for more info look comic pop naomi episode they go on detail about her creation. she was push so they make the show.i repeat the comic character was made so that this show could exist in the DC universe.

She got more powers than Superman. It reminds of the latter run in the Christopher reeves Superman movies where they just gave him powers for plot reason

This is why i love shows like Ben 10, Generator Rex, Danny Phantom and Max Steel. They have all kinds of abilities but the flaws in their powers are what made them entertaining. Heck they even made their fights fun to watch as well. Sure Max Steel and Ben 10 get new powers but they at least give reasons as to how that power came to be

one thing i noticed, they could made that when she gets the power her life gets to problematic, like her friends don't like her anymore because she seems different, the groups she was part feels she forgotten them, show how thing she could do without any problem are now difficult to her, because she has now to deal with the responsibility of the power she got, so she has to chose like spider man, basically use the ideia that she's soo cool and "perfect" and contrast it with the responsibility that comes with the powers and show that even the "coolest" person has problems. and yeah consequences are important. and of course explore the side people. also Icon does Naomi a lot better.

It’s ridiculous how writers for these kinds of shows haven’t caught on to the formula for a good op character. If you want a one punch man, fine, but it has to be so over the top that it keeps you interested. Or they have to cause problems for their self, or others around them. There has to be some stakes. I thought it was weird that the commercial for this show came on pretty much between every KZfaq video I watched.

In the 1995, Star Trek Voyager came out. One of the main criticisms for the first few seasons of the show was that Captain Janeway was literally never wrong about anything. As it turns out, behind the scenes, there was a mandate that the captain could never be wrong because she was a woman, and therefore if she was ever wrong, the audiences would not take her seriously. Obviously this is absurd and only the kind of thing executives think, because they are a bunch of rich old white men who are completely out of touch with the reality the rest of us live in. I feel like the exact same thing must be happening with the slate of shows in the last few years with black female main characters, and it does them a huge disservice. Whether it's Naomi, Ryan Wilder, or Michael Burnham, it seemed the primary goal was to make a perfect badass that could literally do no wrong (even when they did awful shit), while the other characters literally worshipped the ground they walked on. But when you make such a character, they just end up being insufferable. It took them several seasons but they managed to repair Michael Burnham's character to a large extent, explaining that putting herself in the middle of everything was actually an unhealthy hero complex she had, which recontextualized a lot of her actions as a set of dangerous neuroses that she has to manage and be aware of. She's still the main character, and she's still a badass, but now she's relatable. There was clearly a concerted effort put into it. But no such effort was put into Ryan or Naomi's characters, which effectively took two shows and drove them into the ground at superspeed. And it's sad, because both Batwoman and Naomi had a lot of potential as shows, they were just utterly wasted. The executives need to understand that flawed characters are way more interesting, layered, and relatable than perfect ones.

I have not seen the show to be fair, but the twist with the adopted parents seems like it was put in last minute. I don't know how it works in Naomi, but did all the people with powers in her dimension have the same powers? Because if not, how would they have predicted that she would have powers that are useful for their goal? And in her home dimension her adopted parents were seen as nutcases and everyone ignored them even though they had an idea how to fix the tear, which apparently they all wanted to do? I don't think that nobody would have at least hear them out, unless they literally wanted to sacrifice them in some sort of ritual. Like I said, I haven't actually watched the show, so I can only talk about it on the base of hearing it here, I might be missing some things, but it sounds like a stupid plot twist just for the sake of having a twist, the way it was presented here.

As soon as I watched the trailer, I knew that this show was going to be a hot piece of mess. The protagonist has 0 charisma and it's not the fault of the actor portraying her, it's the writers fault for not giving her character an ounce of likability.

It's sad because a power set like that is perfect for not only making a good wish fulfillment character but they also coulda sqeezed out like 5 season of her just learning how use them. Sounds like a huge waste of potential.

I'm confused; If Naomi is an alien, Then the whole thing about her being from another Earth doesn't make any sense. Because she's technically not an alien she's a human being who like her birth parents. Was given powers due to some kind of meteor or whatever was that fell out of the sky that gave certain people abilities. So she's not an alien she's just from another Earth. Brought over from the Earth by her parents for her own protection. And Zombado( sorry if I'm spelling his name wrong.) But he too is not an alien.

Great work, I'm looking forward for your take on the Flash. About Naomi. I think it had ID issues, it wanted to be a Sci Fi-Super Hero Comic- CW teen drama show. It was too much to handle. Being honest, I kind of liked the pilot. I thought it was going to be a teen discovery drama who realized that super hero comics were real, just in another dimension. Can you imagining being a comic book nerd teen who has to opportunity to train with someone who actually met Superman. But that same old "The Only One Savior" story didn't help the show to become a success.

I cannot believe David Zaslav would even consider Greg Berlanti to direct the DCEU moving forward. I mean not a chance. Berlanti greenlit that abomination for 2 more seasons.

Yikes! My brain is melting from how much of a lazy trainwreck this whole show is.....and I'm saying this as someone who hasn't even seen Naomi at all! Based on what you're telling me, her status as a mary sue is probably lower than Rey, Captain Marvel and Batwoman combined. Honesty, much of the fictional content that I despise more than anything else has been produced by the CW, which is infuriating since they introduced me to The Flash's glory days in seasons 1 and 2. After they're all cancelled, I'm never watching the Arrowverse from beginning to end ever again....unless I decide to review them on KZfaq or something. Side Note: It might be unfair of me to say this without watching the show.....but I argue that even Halle Berry's Storm was a more compelling character than Naomi.....along with cooler action sequences, despite being in early 2000's.

Thank you for the entertaining review and the summary of... the "plot"? x) I had a feeling that I dodged a bullet when I decided not to watch another CW Superhero show. One minor criticism though: "Telekinesis" describes the act of moving something with the power of your thoughts. What you described in the video was more like "clairvoyance" or (if she sensed the assassin by his cognitive presence) "telepathy".

Naomi is Smallville without the personality. Smallville spoon fed us the Superman story yes it did go off the rails more than once but it at least tried to make the characters interesting and three dimensional. People loved Clark but they weren't afraid to tell him off when he was wrong.

The so called "twist villain" shit they did with her adopted parents at the end is the cherry on top of the shit sundae that was this show! In that as a reminder, the flaw of Twist This character was a the Villain all along is that the story has to PEPPER it along! It's obvious this was a last minute addition and as pointed out! They had "all this time" since she was a baby to test her for her power, see their point of view, raise her with the mind set that would be to THIER advantage and get everything they wanted! But instead as POINTED OUT ALREADY They "raised her like a normal girl," DID NOT tell her about her powers or the tear or any of that shit! And then at the end, the writers expect the actors to last minute "oh now your crazy people" when I'm sure the actors of both parents had a "my god I need to fire my agent" since THEY knew the audience would not take this well and see the woodenness of the acting. The show runners didn't think anything out and this part cemented it

I want to personally thank you for this video. Not only did you save me from watching that show because i haven't yet and was on the fence since I heard it was canceled. You showd me what not to do when writing a story. See I'm writing a superhero story myself and I actually did what Naomi did. Give my hero powers at the right time he needs them. And I see now that is not the way to go. I need more development so thanks for that lol.

i always try to give a show at least 5 episodes, but my god, when Naomi entered the house for the party and everyone stopped to say HI and basically kiss the ground she walks on, i almost lost it, i did watch for three episodes, bud i couldnt no more

It's all subjective, but it you make a lot of great points. Hollywood seems to be more focused on inclusion, which is great, but then you wonder if they are trying to pander to certain groups more so then bringing a balance between great storytelling a long with diversity?

i really wanted to like this show because it sounded promising, but every week I was like "I can feel this getting cancelled". and the thing is I could see what they wanted to do but they simply did not achieve it. there were a few good things about it, - like the way it looked, I know it's ava duvernay, and she's very passionate about lighting black bodies and it really looked beautiful. and i know the average vewer doesn't care, but the outfits naomi wore were really good at capture a specific time/vibe. - i really liked whenever dee and annabeth were in scenes together or when dee had to interact with humans and be normal but he had no clue how to, good comedy moments a lot of good intentions ended up poorly executed though - I could tell they wanted to build the team from the start, have the group of 6 kids be there from the start instead of building the team slowly, but i fear it was just too many people. you could really feel it when they shoe-horned the entire group together. like, oh well annabelle's coming and she was on a date with jacob so he's tagging along. and nathan is coming so anthony gets jealous and comes too. oh and we need someone to drive so lourdes is coming too. every time they tried to make them all be there in the first half it felt too forced. like when they went on a college visit and lourdes, who dropped out, is also there because of a silly reason. it just never felt natural. there was simply no connection. and i get what they wanted but there was a way to do it better. like i really liked the moments when naomi connected with each person, but it was so rare, it felt like we were supposed to feel like they were friends but except for annabeth, we really didn't see it. and even annabeth, it felt a bit like they had no chemistry as friends, it was just a generic friendship. like she has history with nathan. okay and? i'm supposed to care when they get together? i don't know anything about nathan as a person or how naomi feels about him. she's friends with anthony? okay cool, why? what's so special about their relationship? do they relate to each other in a specific way? why was he there??? he served no purpose! lourdes is her comic book nerdy friend she can geek out with and kinda flirts with. alright, great, show me them bonding, lourdes helping with her comic knowledge. oh whats that, lourdes is almost never there? okay, thanks for using them for queer points and doing nothing with it babes. the only one we see her connect with is jacob, and that's just for one episode, when we see they're both smart and into figuring out the alien stuff. and he's not even her friend, he's her friend's boyfriend like tell me why we see his connection with naomi most? we see 3 people fawn over naomi and we have no idea why??? and why she likes them??? i did appreciate the sentiment, of wanting to have 3 people have feelings for naomi, but be mature enough to get over it and even be friends. like that's a good idea. but it just felt like nothing because the building of them and naomi was not there so there was nothing to get over. - now idk if this is a superhero show thing and ive been un-desensitized, but the adults felt so stiff? like whenever there was any adult, dee, zumbado, the parents, any one at all, it felt like they were in a different show like they were so dramatic and cold and i was like is this an acting problem or a dialogue one or what? because it distracted me so much. - i wish the show had a clearer over-arching plot. because it felt like it was changing so much, i was like wait what are we doing? or maybe it needed to find a clearer tone. because i feel like they didn't want this to be a superhero show, they wanted this to be more like an origin type thing, early stages like smallville. which is cool, but i wish they committed to something, not all things. like i have trouble remembering what happened at all, like what even was the plot? - and also why did they keep dropping things? why was lourdes in the neighborhood and why did she get so defensive? when are dee and zumbado accept their feelings for each other and just fuck? WHERE DID THE DISK COME FROM WHO STOLE IT FROM HER ROOM WHAT THE HELL??? like i was watching that and was like huh? did they imply that her parents took it? when did she find it back? i'm so confused. - the freaking ending. i feel like all they wanted to do was a twist. because the episode 9 reveal that her parents were aliens was a twist, but i guess if you read the comics or the wikipedia page, you knew that kinda. so they wanted a bigger twist of but wait they're actually bad guys!!! it just felt kinda meh cuz the entire season she kept finding out that they were hiding things. like every few episodes she discovered a new secret they had, wouldn't you just assume they're liars at this point, why were they always lying? it was just frustrating. overall, i see what they wanted to accomplish, and i respect some of the ideas, but the execution was just too lackluster, and even if i wished they got the chance to develop, i could tell it just didn't have good foundations, mainly the writing, it jsut didn't reach the level it needed to. i never could latch onto it

Hold on, Zumbado is a GOOD guy in this? I swear he's the main villain in the Naomi comics. And I don't think Brutus looks like that in the comic at all. Are they really that scared of making a person of color a bad guy that they had to manufacture a white guy to be the villain???

I completely agree with u on the super power part. That is so true, if the character is going to be that powerful. It should be years before they master all of their powers. Their most powerful form should be when they are vets in their crime fighting careers. It gives the story more to build on and more room for others things to be more interesting. Making the viewer want to watch it.

If it helps to know, it seems like with Batwoman, legends of tomorrow, and Naomi. Quality had nothing to do with it. After reading some stuff about Nextstar and Wb-discovery that the CW executives cut the Arrowverse shows and Naomi along with other CW shows like 4400, legacies, charmed, rosswell new Mexico, and Dynasty. The cancelations was primarily a numbers game.

I only watched a few episodes. I use to watch the flash, black lightning, DC heroes of tomorrow. As the seasons progressed the story lines got unbelievable and plots thinned. I guess they were suppose to target a younger audience ? But CW as a whole has declined. Atleast with the super hero shows.

From my local comic shop, most people only watch the first episode or the first couple episode then checked out. They’d said they wait for streaming or didn’t care to finish it.

I am pretty sure the ability to touch something and get visions is call tactile clairvoyance, not telekinesis.

I really just watched this show cause I thought Superman, Hawk man, and any of the Dc Universe super heroes would have at least make some parallel universe travel through several alternate earths with Naomi

Well made video, friend. I have never heard of this character and after watching this, I am not surprised. Just another insulting token mary-sue created in lieu of a well developed and written character. As a black person it genuinely feels insulting how Hollywood and even American comics seriously think this is how to write characters, especially diverse ones. It's this post-modernist nonsense that causes them to write female characters so terribly without any development, not build-up, no challenges or likability. At this point, for well written and developed characters, female or otherwise, I just watch anime and read manga.

I've read Naomi's comics and the comics where she is in the Justice League and, honestly, her character as a whole is a bit messy. She joins the Justice League pretty immediately and is really powerful from the beginning. When seeing other fan reactions, most people haven't read her individual series and were wondering why this out-of-nowhere character is suddenly in the Justice League (tbh a lot of people think because a prominent comic book writer authored her series and was pushing for the character). It's surprising the changes they made in the show. In the comics, Naomi's good relationship with her parents it's the strongest part of her character and Zumbado is basically a cartoon villain through and through. Zumbado in the show reflects more of Dee's character from the comics. Honestly, I'm not surprised the show is a mess. The comic is alright but her origin is a bit messy, her powers are undefined, and her strength rivals Superman.

You keep saying telekenisis (move things with your mind), but I think you mean telepathy (communicate/create illusions with your mind). Both powers in the comics which Naomi does not possess. I think what we're seeing in the show is supposed to be a version of Hyper Cosmic Awareness or Interdimensional Vision (Yes, these are actual powers she has. Google it, trust me.) Which in themselves sound ridiculous and probably hard to explain on a show.

Imma sub just because you put in visualizations with animation scenes for your metaphors. I only know of Angry Joe doing that when he does video games, though not as often, and he uses costumes and green screen. And yeah, it's the same issue with Naomi'c comic being a Mary Sue, all perfect with no consequences. I like the idea of her, but they are going to have to Spiderverse her story to do her justice. She is pretty much another Superman, which is what I call any hero with specifically speed, strength, and flight at a minimum. She just also has hearing, sight, and energy abilities as well.
