We've had a few questions about singing and playing bass at the same time. Here's a lesson to help with that kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mduIZdqQva2Uk3U.html

No! It's about singing another melody than playing. What does she mean in THIS video HERE with singing an playing at the same time IMEDIATELY without of practicing or thinking of the melody before?

I can see why a musician would find this lesson helpful, I'm actually frustrated again in my quest to find a melody in my head. I've never had any musical training. I used to joke that I was born with two left ears. Actually, my singing nurtured my life as a comic, since I could make my brothers laugh at church, and they would get into trouble. Choir teachers told me to move my lips and never make a sound. And when I signed up for a singing for beginners class, as I was trying to develop a stage voice, I was devastated when the teacher asked if it wasn't too late to be reimbursed at the first lesson. It was. She apologized, but I was already devastated. Now I've started playing the piano, but I think my past experiences are holding me back. I've got a patient and a friend who is a piano professor at our local conservatory, and his comments are priceless. He also says I need to sing...but it's hard since I have to make sure my neighbors aren't around! BTW here is my video for exercises for low back, as well as treating shoulders, arms and hands. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qrFppsZhyNG3oKs.html

It's a joy to see a clear confirmation of a process l tried over the years. Cuz other than the rhythm thing l always try to make little dialogues with vocals and other instruments. It's not an easy process unless you come from the same planet as Pino Palladino😂 anyway good tips here👍bless

Good explanations! I'll have to try the singing exercise maybe it will be helpful. I usually just listen to a song and match it up by ear, but have always been told I should try to sing what I'm listening to and match the bass to my voice.

Thanks Katie, I found this simple concept enlightening. I can play virtually any song with the bass but... I need to have the tabs at least in front of me, the chords (I.e IrealB), so that I can play these chord notes, on any song, accompanying it. Problem is that without the tabs I can' t play. I want to try now, slowly, your advice, to test if with a song I don't have the tabs but I can think of the notes, by singing them I can accompany a tune. Thanks !
@VentiMocha1Rasp
@VentiMocha1Rasp Жыл бұрын
Muscle memory has no favorites! You have proved that your fingers go where you are SEEING a tab (using your EYES). Likewise, you can retrain your fingers to go where you HEAR (using your EARS) your voice singing the pitches. It will take work and might be a slow as molasses process but you can switch over.

A great lesson but I'll let myself to disagree with the beginning: it *does* matter wether you play bass or keys - not only in terms of technique - strictly the instrument and the way of "common" use of the particular instrument makes your brain functioning in certain "different" way. That's why even using a Moog (keys) instead of usual bass guitar (at least) triggers the certain "way of thinking" - because our neurology :) I am a huge fan of your content guys!

Don't understand: how shoud I sing together with playing immediately, if I didn't thougt about which tones I must play? My way so far is: *first* singing, *then* playing.

This sing then play practice is manageable over minor or major key center tunes like Autumn leaves and Beautiful love, but it's virtually impossible to do over tunes with lots of modulations like the bridge to Miss Jones, Blues for Alice, Stella.. How to approach those?

In that lesson, the student is supposed to be able to recognize or sing the 3rd or the 7th of a chord, that implies he already has a good ear. That lesson does not help a person who needs ear training. Sorry for that, but this video is intended for good 'ears' that don't need ear training 😂
@flyingdics1
@flyingdics1 Жыл бұрын
It does feel like it's going from 0 to 60 on the ear training. I've always struggled with internal pitch and singing, even though I can do all kinds of other relative pitch work well enough. Starting with simple pentatonic melodies is a good place to start, and I hope her actual course has a more reasonable starting place like that.
