I saw this video and it was educational. I had hearing problems, so I went to a Audiologist. I was tested and prescribed hearing aids. I have Unitrons with bluetooth for use with my Android. I have had them now for 10 months. They cost a bit, but being a Vetran, I only had to pay for one and Medicare paid for the other. I can get new ones or update each 3 years. The warranty is three years on the item complete. I saw the Audiologist in the first three months weekly for adjusting and answering any questions. My three year warranty covers anything with them, repairs and complete replacement parts, in batteries batteries. Now I see the Dr. Every six months for follow-up. He said call him anytime I need help of accessories. He even have me His cell # to call him anytime. This is the way to go in my opinion as you so well stated. Excellent videos, as I watched them all and I know now I did right. Thanks for educating the public.

I am researching the purchase of my first pair of hearing aids. Fun fun fun. The audiologist says I am at the edge of really needing them. I have the loss in the high frequency range, the loss that comes with age. I appreciated the maintenance and repair comments. Your battery charger will probably fail before the hearing aid battery, so you will be buying a $400 charger. We are all test subjects as this industry grows and gets better. Because of it's infancy, the products may have growing pains. Eargo should know this and have excellent customer service because there will be problems. The ability to return the devices after 45 days (less fee) adds trust. I want Eargo to work. I want something easy and simple for the first pair. Your review confirmed what I have been reading. Eargo is novel, less expensive, corrects in the most common frequency ranges, and will reply to your phone call or email. On another note, I was told it was a 6-8 week wait to see the audiologist at the big discount membership store. To hell with that! It makes me wonder how many weeks for a service appt.

Super helpful. Thank you. I friend has them and I was considering a purchase. I do have a larger deficit in my left ear aid have moderate to severe high-frequency loss. Put it this way, if I'm not wearing my hearing aids a flock of birds can land at my feet and I would not hear them. I've owned Recon, Oticon and now Kirkland. The main reasons for me not to purchase, no adjustment for different loss in each ear, and no follow up, I get adjustments yearly... You might mention they are not Bluetooth nor do the offer telecoil

Doctor Cliff AuD is a great resource that would be even more helpful if it also covered discussion of other parameters of the reviewed items, such as: -How natural sounding they are on a scale of 1-10, - How prone they are to cause “hearing fatigue” due to artifacts introduced in D/A conversion (such as jitter) on a scale 1-10, - DAC chip specs of the reviewed model (bit length, sampling rate, S/N ratio, frequency range, etc.). -Sound quality compared to a reference or SOTA model.

Dr. Olson, thank you for a very thorough review. I am a retired biomedical scientist so I appreciated your approach to the review and the data you provided. My initial interactions with the company are consistent with what you described and I believe that their devices would provide me with some benefit. What I found particularly helpful, though, was your comparison of the eargo device with prescription in-ear hearing aids. I had a hearing test last week and have mild to moderate high frequency hearing loss, so potentially in the sweet spot for eargo. However, the data you showed makes me think that, if I'm ready to take the plunge for hearing aids, I should at least research what my experience would be with prescription devices. Since there is such a big price difference, in the end I may go with eargo even if they aren't perfect for me. Alternatively, in the short term, I may just turn the TV up a little more and pretend I don't hear my wife's complaints! :-)

Your review is very helpful and has an objectivity that I've found elusive around hearing aids. I now have four year old Phonak Brios from Costco but I'd like to have the features of the Eargo approach. Eargo's in the ear means that the ear can funnel the sound to the microphone, which I imagine would improve directional focus (Phonak's microphones are outside and in back of the ear which is distressing when someone starts talking directly in back of me). I also like the rechargeable batteries. The whole concept just seems more advanced than what Costco offers, and my experience is that most hearing purveyors (audiologists) rely on the excessive pricing to give them a good income. They pretend to be providing an objective service but the pricing model shows them to be no more than highly compensated commissioned salespeople. Costco is much friendlier and more consultative in its approach. Unfortunately, Costco doesn't offer Eargo and they reflect an assessment by Costco that Eargo is not yet up to Costco standards. I did order the demo set but I never received it. Moreover, registering to receive the Eargo demo resulted in my quickly getting a phone call from a salesman looking for a quick sale. I mentioned that I had an appointment in a month with a audiologist (AuD) but even so, the salesman tried to using pricing -- act now or pay more -- to force a quick sale. That combined with the failure to send the demo makes me think that the company has moved from its beginnings with integrity toward something else. Like others on this website, I'd really like an expert review like yours on the new Neo. Supposedly, they can be programmed to map to an audiologist's test, but in light of the company's unwillingness to wait for the test results, that may be more vaporware than reality. For now, I'm highly skeptical that this would work for me, but I'd love to have my mind changed since I love the design and concept of retaining the natural sound funneling capability of my God-given ears. Thanks for taking the time to put this review together. If you were nearer, or if I could work with you remotely, I'd love to pay a fee to have unbiased objective advice not conditioned by device price mark ups or brand commitments (as is, for instance, the case with HearUSA). Thanks.

I found this review very helpful. I have been considering a hearing aid for a few years now, but am only now getting serious about the research. I know I have a certain amount of high frequency hearing loss roughly equivalent in both ears which I think is quite typical for someone of my years (75). My reluctance has been the expense. While I appreciate the skill and training of a licensed ENT professional I can't get my insurance company to cover the expense in spite of the fact that I have been paying my premiums regularly for decades. The other factor is that I can't seem to find a device with all of the features that I think should be possible given the technology available today. Specifically I'm looking for a device that combines the most desirable features of both high fidelity earbuds with hearing aid quality amplification including : - Bluetooth compatibility with a smartphone app with a diagnostic setup and an auto adjust feature. - Bluetooth link to a smart TV to allow for silent listening through the device. - Noise cancellation with adjustment to gradually adjust the input of the ambient sound. - Rechargeable batteries that last at least 12 hours on a given charge. - They should also be as small and inconspicuous as possible. From my research so far, I guess I'm looking for a menage a trois between the latest Nearheara IQ Buds Max with Boost ($499) in the form of the Eargo Plus ($2500), and the professional quality of a $6k professional hearing aid like a Starkey or Oticon. A lifetime guarantee or at least reasonable insurance fees that would cover malfunction or loss (at least the first time). I know I'm dreaming but the manufacturer of such a device would become for hearing aids what Apple and Samsung are to Smartphones, IMHO.

Very good review. My understanding is that the rechargeable battery in the Eargo has a service life of about 2.7 years and they are not replaceable. If that is the case, then one is looking at an expenditure of ~ $2000 every two and a half years. That to me is a big con which should be in your pros and cons list.

In Eargo's information they state a number of recharge cycles for which the non-replaceable batteries are rated. Running the math, I found that, assuming a daily recharge, the cycle count and the warranty come out pretty close to equal. Thus I concluded with heavy daily usage, I would indeed be "on my own" after the warranty period. Your Real Ear Measurment crush the value of this product to most of us out there seeking hearing help. Thank you for your thorough performance review.

I have been using Eargo devices since July of 2018 and as a promo, received $ off and an extra year warranty, which was important since I have returned one already and the second is showing similar problems with volume control. The one big pro for me is them being invisible and fairly comfortable. I did like that they sent out non-working samples to test the fit. Since I had never worn hearing aids before, I was able to determine in advance of purchase if I could tolerate them. They do provide some help with my hearing loss in left ear, how much is uncertain. Since I only have loss in one ear, I use them interchangeably. They are the same device, just one is stamped L and one stamped R. The one con I see is durability, but not sure if professionally fitted and programmed ones have similar durability issues. I appreciated the video showing the pros and cons of Eargo's, as they are not for everybody!

I bought these and wore them for about 30 days before asking how to return them. I agree that Eargo's customer service is excellent. Through several phone calls they worked with me to try to make the devices suit me, but without success. 1) I could never get the right one to slip into my ear canal far enough without its hurting. 2) The flexifibers made my ears itch maddeningly. 3) They didn't improve my hearing significantly.

I went to Eargo after an Audiologist examined me. I have very typical age-related hearing loss, and she wanted $3800 for one aid that was external and the size of my thumb. My insurance would pay $2500. Eargo gave me 2 plus the charger, invisible, totally covered by my insurance. So far, I feel like I have a good deal - they are comfortable, and I can hear better.

Excellent video. Thank you. My questions, not addressed, are about feedback which I find frustrating with my current aids. Do the Eargo aids eliminate this feedback? Also, I still can't hear well even with programmable aids and miss a lot of conversation. I have to use Closed Captioning on TV or I'd miss most of what is being said even with hearing aids! My concern with in the Eargo ear aids is a feeling of blocked ears.

As a person with moderate to more than moderate hearing loss - I have tried the expensive audiologist referred ones. I had the starkeys for almost 3 years. Yes, I know I need more than just amplification. The customizable ones never really came out right for me, and every time I had an office visit it was another $65. Which would be ok if it really made a difference. I never had the chart like yours with the different colors and how close are we getting to repairing? My hearing loss. These did not have any sort of trial period, once you drive it off the lot,its yours- good bad or ugly. They probably had a standard 1 yr warranty....but if anything major happens, you get to pay the full cost of replacing them. I am going to try the new eargo neos and see if they are remotely functional. While I found the video extremely helpful and unbiased- I do not think it is accurate for a person with normal hearing to try them and decide if they are good or not.... I'm curious what the 'assymetrical' test was. Mine is currently 50% in the left and 35% loss in the right; they knew this when I asked if it was even an option... Only Sam's has ever been deterred by the disparity. If they don't work, I haven't lost anything.

I have suffered through Unitron Quantum M BTE hearing aids for 4 yr. They assist for my hearing TV or movies at the theater, but are not very helpful in noisy environments like the mall. Also, as a musician, I don't like them at all. My own voice drowns out my instrument. I never wear them when performing and rely instead upon stage monitors being turned up (I play mostly acoustic string instruments) and rely on my unassisted hearing. I tried the Eargos to see if they would be better for music, they were not. My Unitrons spend most of the time stored in their case. I am almost 70 and I simply tell anyone that I'm talking to, that I have a hearing impediment and they must speak clearly and louder than usual for me to understand them. That seems to be the most reasonable alternative to hearing aids and usually works. I use a Pocket Talker at home for TV and sometimes when we have guests. The sound quality is far better than my Unitrons. Based upon your review of the Bose Hearphones, I've ordered them on line. Perhaps they will be better than my Pocket Talker. Thank you for the reviews and information you provide.

Enjoyed what struck me as an honest and straightforward a review with commentary on the Eargo...and thanks for that. As a 'late boomer' (67 and climbing) who suffers more from 'spoken word intelligibility' (The ' snooze flea file I miz dis fly' sort of thing), especially in restaurants and high background noise and ambience situations that the Eargo's may not be a solution in my case. This, confounded by tinnitus that if I pay attention to it is part of my 'daily soundtrack'. That being said, I noticed during your examples of the 'in-ear' response curves of the various levels and etc. that I could distinguish 'differences' even in the 'over the web' audio. I can chalk that up (perhaps) to being an audio buff who has rather unusual monitors and tweaked settings on the desktop 'puter...and ancient ears trained to hear such. Still, I've spoken to my GP/MD about a referral to a local audiologist to see (well, hear....*L*) what could be done to improve and protect what I've left. Please keep up your efforts to educate the consumer on the new products that are available now and soon to be available; it's always great to have an advocate in our corner. Very good review of this product. As a Ph.D clinical and research audiologist (retired) I have a few comments. I think that you are confusing noise reduction with overall hearing aid gain and compression. I only saw somewhat linear gain compression on your real-ear measurements which is not the same as noise reduction and has been around for decades. Digital processed noise reduction attempts to decrease non-speech input while trying to maintain amplification for speech input. This type of real noise reduction may improve speech understanding in noisy situations. Secondly, the lack of being able to program the hearing aid to me is its greatest con. I am sure that it will provide some benefit to some wearers, but any benefit will likely be sub optimal and the user will not know that. Other than being "invisible", there are many such non-programmable hearing aids available at perhaps a quarter of the price of the Eargo and rechargeable hearing aids have been around for at least 15 yrs. Thirdly, there was no mention of what happens when the rechargeable battery goes bad. Is it user replaceable or built in like the iphone which needs major surgery to replace. I conclude, albiet from the limited information that I have about this device, that it is overly expensive for the unimpressive technology it offers.

I'm surprised that Dr. Cliff did not reply to your insightful comments, so I will. 1) The “cocktail party problem” you described has been addressed by researchers at Ohio State University in Columbus. They have tested versions of a digital filter that not only amplifies sound but can also isolate speech from the background noise and automatically adjust the volumes of each separately in real time. One of their partners to commercialize it is Starkey Hearing Technologies. 2) It is true there are cheaper non-programmable hearing aids available, and rechargeable hearing aids have been around for quite some time, but for many users being invisible is paramount. This is the first invisible rechargeable aid I've seen. 3) Repairs-as written below, since Dr. Cliff's video was made in 2017, Eargo now offers post-warranty repairs for a fee.

Thank you for your review, so interesting. I recently lost a hearing aid (Unitron OPN 3). I had It for six weeks and lost $2,500 while it was on trial. I wasn’t particularly happy with it. I’m wondering would the invisible hearing aid type be more secure in the ear then one that sits behind the ear?

Depending on the severity & configuration of your hearing loss, the Eargo may work for you. You get no customization from the Eargo, but some people report that they get benefit out of it. Insurance companies already cover hearing aids. Some cover them 100%. You just have to ask for those benefits and pay the higher premiums.

Really appreciate the great review Dr. Olson. I've previously used siemens nitro and silk 5x for moderate hearing loss (cic and iic). Both aids made my ear feel plugged in, so this design might make it more comfortable. I have similar loss in both ears but went ahead with a device for my better ear to keep the costs economical. I've noticed that I've had to strain myself in some situations to hear and wasn't very impressed with them and wouldn't use them unless I have important meetings, would having the second aid help significantly or should I hunt for other models? I'm also considering eargo but lack of customization might be a hindrance for me.

Hi Judy. Glad to help. I would recommend getting your ears professionally cleaned the first time to determine how "waxy" you are. After that, you may be able to self-clean your ears. Or perhaps you don't produce much wax anyway. I'm not familiar with any hearing care providers in VA. Sorry.

My hearing loss from my last test is as follows: 50 decibels at 250 Hz, 55 decibels at 500 Hz, 55 decibels at 1000 Hz, 65 decibels at 2000 Hz, 60 decibels at 4000 Hz, and 70 decibels at 8000 Hz. Do you recommend any invisible hearing aids (other than Eargo) based on my hearing test results? Or is this out of range? I think you mentioned in this video that the higher frequency range wasn't as good for Eargo. That's for my left ear. My right ear is within the normal range.

I believe it's called the Eargo Neo. I'm looking into them right now because my audiologist said nothing will help you but cargo said, "we may not be able to help but lets give it a try and see how things go. Wear them daily for a month and then if they aren't working...send them back. I'm glad he recommended the Eargo's I was a bit worried. The return policy, per my hearing helper at Eargo says I have to speak with him on the phone and then his manager above him to why I need to return them, but he has already marked, "they may not workin his ears due to past strokes but lets try and see if they help, if they do. Great, if they don't full refund in place. I'm still on the fences with the Eargo. We wll see. But I would like to see what he has to say about the NEO at Eargo because that's what I'll be getting if I go with their company.

First I just didn't have the money and wasn't sure about the product. One question is if you are truly unhappy with Eargo can you ask for refund? Two would be is there away for them to do a better job at customizing? I mean as you get older and older chances of the bad hearing loss could get worst and would these even help. My last question is my father has bad hearing, and my older brother, can bad hearing be like vision can it be inherited or passed on?

I've had mild/moderate loss my whole life (I'm 56), but have somtimes struggled to afford them. A few years ago, I qualified for state voc rehab assistance and they paid $4k+ for an audiologist fitting of behind the ear aids with all the bells and whistles, tests and graphs etc... While waiting a few weeks for those aids to be custom made, I heard about Costco's new sub-$2k hearing aids. They had hearing aid specialists who conducted free tests in the store, and offered many of the same brands the audiologist did. I bought a pair of in-canal aids, which came in a week later, custom molded and programmed to my ears. Three years later, the Costco pair fit better, sound better, and are easier to care for in my active lifestyle. Costco's warranty was also a year longer!

That is the biggest issue with an open fit. However, a completely closed fit to get more bass can be bad as well due to occlusion. The best would be to have a custom vent size that could accommodate bass without feedback.

Level 1 doesn't amplify sound enough in a classroom setting, but works great when I sing on the worship team without feedback from the monitors. Level 4 is too much for me when I sing and I usually don't need it in the classroom. It's amazing how each room you walk into makes a difference in how you hear and what you hear.
