There will never be another Earl Scruggs. God bless him.
@bryankeller34924 жыл бұрын
I had the priveledge to meet him in 2011, shortly before his death. It was a sad occasion though because he was ravaged by Alzheimer's ....I pushed his wheelchair to the stage, where he would get up, walk to his place and take his seat. When the music started however, he came alive, and all was just like it had always been. It was the second time I'd ever seen him. Once with Doc and Merle, John Hartford, and his band in 1980,...THEN, this occasion. Full circle.

I like how Earl is doing percussion with his banjo while the others solo. There’s a guy who’s seen it all. You can tell he’s just tickled to be up there with a group of relative youngsters who are keeping the music alive.
@truthlikevelcro5689 Жыл бұрын
Hehehe I do that with my guitar with my thumb and index finger. do the downbeat with he side of my right hand. make great percussion. And yes, I remember them looking up to greats like George Jones, Conway Twitty, etc., and like George Jones (he wasn't a favorite of mine, but he did have a 'signature' voice. Looking up to Johnny Cash. And now I see the younger musicians with them and looking up to them! Every generation has this phenomenon., and I suppose it will always be that way!

Earl Eugene Scruggs (January 6, 1924 - March 28, 2012) was an American musician noted for popularizing a three-finger banjo picking style, now called "Scruggs style," which is a defining characteristic of bluegrass music. His three-finger style of playing was radically different from the traditional way the five-string banjo had previously been played. This new style of playing became popular and elevated the banjo from its previous role as a background rhythm instrument to featured solo status. He popularized the instrument across several genres of music.

If anyone has a recording of Lil' Jimmie Dickens in the summer of 1993 at the Opry, I would love to see it. My grandparents took my aunt and myself. I was 13. I would love to see it again as an adult. There were many other greats performing but don't remember. I got to meet Porter Wagoner and Reba's back up singers. We watched Marty Stuart and Tanya Tucker on an Opryland stage. It was amazing. It was a hot summer and had gone on a water ride not realizing we were going to the Opry a little later. I was still soaking wet and wished I had a chance to clean up. It was amazing experience nonetheless!

Bluegrass people nurture the next generation. Off the top of my head: Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, AJ Lee, Sullivan Tuttle, Billy Strings... I think music is safe enough for another while!
