Hi Professor, First of all, love your videos as a huge Sharks fan. It’s great to see content creation for our smaller team. I wanted to bring up that while I've grown attached to Guschin and Bordeleau, I also understand GMMG's perspective. If the Sharks end up with a top 5 pick in a loaded draft class next season, there may not be much room for new high draft picks if Guschin and Bordeleau stay. Teams are built through a good mix of free agent signings and homegrown talent. With potentially five top 6 forwards around the same age (if two of Musty, Chernyshov, and the two 2025 FRPs develop), the focus shifts to filling out the rest of the roster by signing or trading for proven veterans while continuing to draft productive players on minimum deals. By showing that the sharks have open positions on the 3rd line, they are also expressing to interested FA that there will be playing time for them. If the Sharks give playing time to Guschin and Bordeleau, they will eventually need to pay them. I believe they are saving money for players with higher ceilings. If Guschin and Bordeleau prove themselves in limited games, they will be worth it. Otherwise, it sends a message to free agents that the Sharks will continue to invest in their young core. There are 4 top 6 spots locked up for the foreseeable future (Eklund, Smith, Celebrini, 2025 FRP). Musty, Chernyshov, Bystedt, and even Edström and Halttunen arguably have higher ceilings than Guschin and Bordeleau, not to mention the Vegas 2025 late FRP. The vets the Sharks signed aren’t Guschin and Bordeleau’s competition, their competition is the ridiculous amount of promising young players within our system.
@professorhockey
@professorhockey 18 күн бұрын
I do see your points, just a couple of things. In regard to the 2025 FRP, it’s possible the Sharks might go for another defenseman. Obviously it’s too early to tell, but I’d be surprised if Grier was specifically planning around having another lock in the top 6 when so much can change in a years time. Bordeleau to me, right now, is a very capable third liner, and it remains to be seen if he actually has top 6 upside. That’s actually pretty good value from a second rounder. You mention a few of the Sharks prospect, but they are still very raw. Like I say in the video, I think it would be silly to forgo developing Bordeleau and Gushchin simply because some of the other guys could be better. In two years time, when Halttunen is in a similar position to Bordeleau now, should his development be scrapped because some 2025 or 2026 draft pick might have a higher ceiling? If anything, if Grier truly doesn’t see a future for them on the team, it’s still better to see what you can get out of them this year as that can raise their trade value.

@@professorhockey Those are great points prof. They definitely should go after a defenseman idk how I forgot about that. I also agree that given bordeleaus defensive game he has proven to be a very capable 3rd liner. I think it would definitely be silly to scrap his development, but I think Mike Grier wants players to force themselves into the lineup when as you said bordeleau has proven to be NHL caliber but maybe not top 6. If halltunen followed the same path and a 2025/6 pick looked to have more potential maybe he would scrap the development and wait until a player is so good that he has no choice but to insert him into the lineup. Im a big fan of bordeleau and agree that he should be a third line guy, but it does seem like Griers waiting for someone to wow him.

I'm debating on if Smith and Celebrini get their 8-10 games in the NHL and then get put into the AHL. Letting their contracts slide for one season. I think it's one more season at the bottom before of the pacific before becoming contenders for a playoff push. So many 1 year contracts and short term-small cap hit contracts. I expect some trade moves and a signing or two for 25-26 playoff run. Someone like Kyle Connor, Alex Tuch, Rasmus Anderson, I like the Lund line together(ek-gran-zetter) Which puts toffoli-wennberg-bords(idk there) then on too kunin-sturm-dellandrea 4th line- PK klim-goodrow-bailey Love the content. Seriously great video. So many decisions to make. I can honestly see goodrow just getting bought out or benched at some point. There’s probably gonna be a lot of rotation in and out this year. I am starting to think that this goodrow acquisition was not the best of ideas , unless or until we see why it was done. Graf goes to ahl for sure. I think we see guschin as a lineup and either he or bords traded before or after the start of the season. Great job professor!

It’s certainly not impossible, but that’s really the problem, we have no clue. Gushchin has produced at the AHL level and has shown flashes and production in the very short amount of games he’s played in the NHL. That’s why one would think he’d be given the chance to show what he can do this year. He could get traded and amount to nothing, or as you say, put up 40+ points.

Hey Professor, Yeah, I understand what Grier is aiming for. He want's competition. Iron sharpens iron kind of thing. I also understand the point you are making about young players getting frustrated and leaving for greener pastures. Personally, Bordelo and Gooshin are not 4th liners which makes the situation even more difficult. I also expect that Grier will part with some of the veteran bottom 6 at the trade deadline. Its a nice problem to have I suppose? Pete Clovis, CA

I’m really hoping the new coaching staff is a little more open minded to putting younger players who can prove themselves over vets just because they’re vets. Would love to see them start the season start with some rotations in the bottom six and letting the players that produce stick around. I also suspect some of the new acquisitions become trade deadline flips to clear some slots up for younger players. If they can take that next step then hopefully the following season we see them graduate to full time NHLers. Well just have to wait and see but I agree with you I would really hate to see these players that we have spent so much time developing get put to the wayside. Also just wanted to throw out there. I’ve noticed your videos are getting a lot more traction and engagement and I’m super stoked for you. love your channel and hope to see it continue to grow.

Out of all the current forward vets on the Sharks team, Sturm does seem like the one who might be most likely to be traded before season start. One year left on his deal, pretty affordable contract value, really good 4c, can even flex up to 3c in a pinch. He is even a cup winner, which some teams love

Musty 9 games, then Bordy takes over on his wing after? I agree Bords needs a 💯 legit spot, so u know if he’s a keeper or doesn’t fit the team picture in the next 5 years (I personally really like him) but there’s only upside to playing him 70-82 game…. as a trade asset for RHD as well, but I think he’s still young and has 2 more years to show it in pro

Defensive disasters like him need to be possession monsters to hide their poor d-zone play. Is that Bordeleau? No. He sucks. He's been overrated by the same faction of the fanbase ever since he's been drafted. He isnt good enough for a top 6 role and hed be hilariously bad in a bottom 6 role. Please learn how to scout. Kunin should never be in the top 6(and only was because of how bad the roster was last year) but if you think Bordeleau would be better than him on the 4th line you just don't know the game of hockey. Grier has had to purge all of Doug JR's useless small boi picks and Bordeleau will be the last one.
