Crappie are one of the most popular sport-fish among light line anglers. I have caught plenty of Crappie in my day, but have never devoted a lot of time to learning about this species. In this series, I intend to target both Black & White Crappie in an effort to learn more about them and share that knowledge with all of you. Stay tuned for more episodes of Slab Stories in the future!

In today's episode, the Crappie were fully spawned out and I was targeting them in early summer. This can be the beginning of a tough bite in my experience, but fortunately I was able to locate them and make them eat. I think the real challenge will come as the water temperature continues to get higher in the heat of summer. On this particular day, I caught most of my fish on a Mule Minnow 2.2 rigged up on a 1/32oz Mule Jig. I simply drifted it along a weedline and the suspended fish were popping it as it sank. The other technique I started to figure out was "tightlining" which is essentially a pendulum motion with a slightly heavier jig (3/32oz in this case). In both cases, it was a micro finesse plastic which made them eat. As much fun as these fish can be on live bait, the ultra finesse plastics are always the way I like to get them! Fun trip and I learned a lot! Also I got 10 fish in the freezer to make tacos with :)

Glad you had better luck! went to a lake yesterday I'd never been too and I was really hoping to get some Crappie, Gills and Bass, but after 7 hours, all I did was hook one nice Crappie and right as I got him to the yak he did a little flip and came off the hook.... so I was pretty down about it, but I'm just going to go to my river tomorrow and try it again! Also I got a TFO rod thanks to you and so far I've been loving it, but yesterday would have been the first good day with it, so hopefully tomorrow will be a banger with it.

I’m really excited for this crappie series. I’ve been trying to go to a great crappie lake out here but unfortunately it’s been like 15+ mph winds every time I wanna go. Not ideal in my kayak. Do you use regular GoPro batteries? Mine just seems to die so fast. I use the 5 min loop mode.
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah wind makes kayak fishing a bit harder! And yeah I just use standard GoPro batteries. I don't do the loop mode but I do run pretty much the entire trip. I go through several batteries usually.

@@FishAnything sweet I bought a case for my GoPro that lets me just plug into a USB port I installed on my yak but it is best used for say a pole mount or chesty. But I think the video on sheath is a pain while wearing a pfd. Head mount seems the best which sucks with a cord attached.

Hello @Online Outdoorsman, I have been enjoying your videos for quite a while now and I am finally starting to ultralight fish myself. I have been having a few problems, i am trying to cast 1/32oz jigs with a 2inch crappie minnow like you and I use a 5ft ugly stick gx2 with a shimano sienna 500 reel. I put 10lb power pro braid with 2lb fluoro leader. It didnt go very far so I decided to get a 7ft gx2 as I am a bank fisherman. Unfortunately my jig is still only going about 10-15yards max. What exactly am I doing wrong? Is my line too heavy? Thank you for your videos I love them.
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 2 жыл бұрын
I bet it is the 10lb braid to be honest. A 500 reel has a narrow spool diameter which will cut down on distance, but I think the braid might just not load up well with the smaller jigs. I would consider trying either 6lb braid or 2-4lb monofilament. You should be able to get more distance. That said, 15 yards is 45 feet. That isn't bad!
