Crappie are one of the most popular sport-fish among light line anglers. I have caught plenty of Crappie in my day, but have never devoted a lot of time to learning about this species. In this series, I intend to target both Black & White Crappie in an effort to learn more about them and share that knowledge with all of you. Stay tuned for more episodes of Slab Stories in the future!

In today's episode, the Crappie were fully spawned out and I was targeting them in early summer. This can be the beginning of a tough bite in my experience, but fortunately I was able to locate them and make them eat. I think the real challenge will come as the water temperature continues to get higher in the heat of summer. On this particular day, I caught most of my fish on a Mule Minnow 2.2 rigged up on a 1/32oz Mule Jig. I simply drifted it along a weedline and the suspended fish were popping it as it sank. The other technique I started to figure out was "tightlining" which is essentially a pendulum motion with a slightly heavier jig (3/32oz in this case). In both cases, it was a micro finesse plastic which made them eat. As much fun as these fish can be on live bait, the ultra finesse plastics are always the way I like to get them! Fun trip and I learned a lot! Also I got 10 fish in the freezer to make tacos with :)
