This was Ron's grandma's: 3 cups of flour 1 & 1/3 cup of butter, cold Salt, a pinch Vinegar, a dash 1 egg 1/3 cup cold water Combine the flour & salt. Add the butter (if you cut it into cubes first it's easier to work with). Work into the flour with 2 knives until the butter is the size of peas throughout. In a bowl whisk together an egg with your water & vinegar before combining this with the other ingreidnets to form a dough. This is enough to make a top and a bottom crust. For the pie: Wild blackberries, at least 3 cups but the more the better 3/4 cup sugar + more for sprinkling on top 1/4 cup flour A bit of butter for rubbing on top Lay a pie crust onto the bottom of a pie plate. In a bowl combine your blackberries, sugar & flour. Mix up well before pouring this filling into your pie plate. Cover with a top crust and crimp the edges as you desire. Be sure to cut out a vent on top so that steam may be let out while baking. Rub the top crust with butter then sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 30-40 minutes at 350 degrees.

Grew up on my grandparents' farm in northeast Georgia, and there was several acres of pasture not in use any more where wild blackberries had taken over. When they were at their peak, usually just after the 4th of July, I would wake up early in the morning, load up a couple of bushel baskets on the tractor with a couple of gallons of water and some PB&J sandwiches and spend all day picking. First thing my grandmother would do was make me a blackberry cobbler or pie. The rest of the berries she would make into jams and jellies. Thanks again for sharing

This video brings back a memory of picking blackberries with my grandpa in his garden many long years ago. I was a city kid so I loved going to visit my grandparents in the country. So peaceful watching you make pie the old fashioned way. And I love that you dance with your kitty (I used to have a black cat named Boo that I danced with).

Oh the memories this brought back! We used to pick wild blackberries in the back to make jams and jellies with. The leftover pie dough was used to make patty pans which are like tarts with leftovwr fruit or just a bit of flour, egg and cinnamon sugar. Keep up the good work!❤

It's my favorite dessert of all time! Oh, and you're correct about the GMO stuff they put in our stores and try to call it "food" compared to the real thing. There's no comparison. Cultivated has no flavor, or is bitter, while real fruit is sweet and bursting with flavor!

Ahh...the memories. As a farm boy in a time when fields had hedgerows and berries could grow wild, my Mom made berry pies in season. We had hickory nuts and naturalized cherries that had been planted by birds here and there.

I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I love your cat. I have 2 sisters that look just like yours. They were strays that came to my home, and I kept them. They are my most loyal friends. A good cat is a wonderful thing. Nothing tastes like wild blackberries. The ones from the store pale in comparison.

I planted thornless blackberries (forgive me...I'm old 🙂) in my front yard last year. Today I made a blackberry cobbler - first I've had in many many years. The bushes are loaded - only 6 bushes, but doing very well, and I'm hoping to get enough in my freezer for at least 3 pies for the future. LOVE this video!!!!

I remember wild blackberries growing in several little ditches around our neighborhood when we were kids. My mom would send us out to get stuck a thousand times and collect a couple big bowls full, LOL. Then she'd magically turn them into the most amazing pie ever, so it was totally worth it!

Starting about 60 years ago when I was eight, I used to grab a pail and walk up and down the roads picking blackberries when they were in season. Sometimes I'd eat a few of them right off the bush. My pail would be filled to about an inch from the top. But since my family was a large one, the blackberries would go fast. My mom would use what I brought home to top vanilla ice cream with or make jams or add them to coffee cakes. You're so right! Those little wild blackberries tasted better than the giant store-bought ones.

You know, we used to live by a bunch of berry bushes in the woods. My girls would pick them and bring them home. I thought they were raspberries but now I’m thinking they were blackberries. We went and picked as many as we could find and I baked a bar pastry. It was delicious and the girls were so proud that they had picked the berries! I agree with store bought berries. As every experienced pie baker knows, however, dancing with your cat is the real key to a great pie. 💖😺🥧

The sight of you picking blackberries brought back two memories--one, when I was a toddler in Massachusetts, I remember we went out to pick blueberries. Thing is, I don't know if we brought any back, because no sooner had a blueberry hit the bottom of our bucket, it was picked up by one of us and eaten! When I was a kid (here in California) I asked my paternal grandma what she used to do, and aside from caring for sick people with commonsense home remedies (baking soda bath for chicken pox), she picked berries for pay. One of the other girls she worked with always had loads of scratches on her hands and arms, while grandma had none. This girl asked grandma why she didn't get scratched by the thorns, and grandma said it was because she picked the berries from the bottom up, and this girl was having to break through the thorns and branches to pick from the top down. Yes, she started picking the way grandma did, and stopped getting scratched by the thorns.

I have only had pies and cobblers made from wild blackberries so I wouldn’t be able to compare those made with modern types. I used to play these videos for my bed fast mother as she was going through Alzheimer’s disease. She forgot how to walk and I helped her through those hard times by trying to help her remember her past. My mom grew up in a small one bedroom cabin in the Appalachian Mountains so this setup here was exactly how she grew up. With the exception of having two parents, seven brothers and sisters and a dog that is. Actually this video brought up memories of two generations because I remember sneaking into moms fridge and grabbing a few of those blackberries that she had prepared just like the ones here but had ran out of time that day to bake the pie. She literally called these pies “poor man’s pie” because of the simple ingredients used in the recipe. There were so many hours spent over the years with us kids, three boys and mom along the roadsides here in North Carolina picking blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. I pray I remember these things always. Even though Alzheimer’s took my mother’s memory and she didn’t know who I was during the last 6 years I knew who she was and tended to her every need until she passed away in my arms as I sang “you are my sunshine” into her ear. It was the single hardest yet most beautiful thing I’ve ever done. Soon, on her birthday I will trek up the mountain to that cabin where she was born and spread her ashes. I’m not sure I’ll be able to leave her there but somehow watching these videos makes me feel connected to her. I remember her lying in her bed watching them on the monitor I had placed over her. Though she had forgotten how to talk I relished the little noises and mumbles she would make when she would see things inside this cabin that reminded her of her past. Please don’t ever stop producing these as they’re having a much greater impact than you may have imagined. Blessings and good health to you!❤

My favorite thing to do with my dad is to pick the wild blackberries and raspberries in our yard. We also had a garden at the same time when I was growing up. Wild blackberries have a lot of great antioxidants and other benefits for your health.

We went to St Genevieve today! 😊 We stopped by the museum and drove all over the town looking at the beautiful houses and cool buildings, we didn’t stop in anywhere else because it was POURING RAIN and we had a couple more hours to drive home, but we plan to come back asap ❤❤

When I was a kid we would go out into the country in the late spring searching for dewberries. When I was 12 we moved to east Texas and we got to know where the good dewberry patches were. Whereas blackberries grow up on bushes, dewberries grow more on trailing vines along the ground. We found one dewberry patch where the vines grew on the steep bank along the roadway and you could just stand and pick the berries as opposed to having to stoop over to pick. Mom would make cobblers and jelly from the berries. Yum! The berries today have been engineered to be much larger but in doing so they don’t seem to have the flavor they used to. Strawberries today are huge but don’t have the same flavor. Some of the strawberries are big as golf balls.
