Such a class act. Foreman said the same about Lyle. Not surprising Archie Moore passed on some of his 220+ fight experience. Caught us by surprise last week. RIP good man.

I met Earnie Shavers when I was a Golden Glove fighter out of Minor A. C. Boxing stable, in Youngstown Ohio. The year was 1984 or 1985 and I was 17 or 18 years old. Mr. Shavers was tall and imposing, but very down to earth. He put his fist up against mine and it was if my now adult hands was holding the hand of a kindergartner in comparison. The man’s fist was HUGE. I’ve never forgotten that moment.

If Shavers doesn’t even follow boxing it tells you something. The 70’s was probably the greatest heavyweight era, we had Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Holmes, Quarry, Chuvalo, Bonavena, Snipes and more. Also, those fighters really came to box each other. We’ll probably never see that again.

Thank you, Earnie for explaining how you don't watch boxing these days anymore because it's not up to the same standard as in the days of ROCKY MARCIANO!! Just like me who doesn't watch NBA basketball because of how poor it got. Football is a joke at the pro level also nowadays. I loved Ron Lyle; how hard nosed he was in the ring. All of Denver was rooting for him whenever he fought.

Baseball is going down hill too. Pitchers can't throw inside anymore, instant replay takes away some of the human element. Catchers use electronics to signal the pitcher to prevent sign stealing. It's becoming unwatchable.

Watch him vs Ron Lyle. He had a good work ethic. People seen him as the original Mike Tyson. He was hyper aggressive for like 10 rounds. His chin wasn't really suspect he just got hit flush and it drops anyone. Ali always rolled wit the punches off instinct. If he got hit he let it turn his head so he would take the full impact.
