Thanks for the great video. Can relate to everything you said. My wife and I also live and work from a 40 ft monohull. I can also confrim It’s hard. My experience is, it’s hard to make living on a boat work if you’re trying to take your full time 40 hour a week salaried job and do it from a boat. Especially if you’re at anchor. Having flexibility in your schedule makes a big difference. Also worth noting you do this with out the proximity of your friends and family. Having only your partner to lean on and share a stressful week can additional stress on your relationship. We often underestimate how much we go to on our friends for perspective and relief from the everyday grind. It’s A LOT to manage on your own. I don’t think we could do it with out a home base to come back for part of the year.

Since your clients and co-workers are aware of and support your floating office, I have a suggestion for you. Put a wireless video camera up on the mast and during the time before the meeting starts substitute the mast camera for your laptop camera and share moments of solitude from Polar Seal. When the meeting starts, switch back to the laptop camera; everyone will sigh and have a much more relaxed meeting.

I had a home based office for years. It was difficult to get away from the 'office' just because it was there 24/7. Even if I didn't enter that space. Every time I came 'home' I arrived at my office - even if the door was closed. Your tiny situation adds to the cross-over. However I would do what you're doing in a flash. With good discipline there are wonderful benefits. The negatives can be put in their place - literally. Your office view alone helps with the cramped lifestyle. And a little bit of rocking is atmospheric :) And yes, I would want a slightly larger boat with a permanent work station set up especially where editing and sound recording is involved. I will be doing this in a small rv once I land in Europe later this year. On water time will be my 'pleasure time' away from work.

In the US, if you kept 1/4 of the boat ( one cabin) separated as a work area only, you would also be essentially able to subtract 1/4 of all boat expenses as business expenses. If this is news to you, tell Ryan to spend an hour with a tax accountant.

@brownnoise357
@brownnoise357 Жыл бұрын
you might find the USA sailing courses a much better deal. Good luck Selling your house very very soon, as a huge Crash is incoming, but the upside of that, as it will be Worse than 2008, and after that one, people just couldn't find buyers for boats and many great boats sadly got taken Offshore and Scuttled. One incidence I heard of was a guy with a 250,000 dollar yacht, and was no longer able to afford Marina costs, or maintenance any longer so the harbourmaster where he kept his yacht havingbbecome a good friend, he gave his yacht to him to Save it. In 2009, I traveled to Hungary on my way to a Motorbike Rally in Romania, and the site I stayed at in Hungary, the owner as well as being mad about Motorbikes, had a couple of horses, and a lot of land. Local horse owners couldn't afford to keep some gorgeous horses, so gave them to him, because he knew he would look afterbthem. Pretty much every Property I passed in Hungary had a For Salevsign on it, and lots of people were doing up old Skoda, LaLa, and Trabant Cars, because they couldn't afford to keep the mostly German new Cars they had bought within the previous 2 years. Those who had bought cars 3+ years earlier, generally had finished paying for them, but there were very few of those around. I had never seen anything like it before. On visits in following years - it's a great Country to visit - it seemed no Hungarians were interested in buying Anything Berman ever again, as it seems they'd been really badly stitched up, and they had switched to buying Suzuki Cars Made in Hungary. So advice, if you sell ok, is difficult if Boat prices haven't already Crashed so you can use the money right away, what to do to keep your Cash Safe, as the Plan is no more Bank Bailouts , there'll be Bail ins instead, like the Grand Bank Geist done in Cyprus in 2014 ? Personally I bought Vaulted Audited daily Silver Vaulted Offshore, Outside of EU and British Jurisdiction, and as the most undervalued Asset in the World, Post Crzsh it is ,ikely to have a massive price rebound after over 150 years of heavy price Suppression. Boat New Build Construction Slots should be easily available, or what I'm looking for say 2 to 3 years old, I expect to be spoiled for choice. Given the Riggers of the Precious Metals Markets have just been Convicted, the Silver price may start going up soon anyway. Of course things may not turn out how I expect, as nothing like this Corruption of Markets and Currencies has happened to this extent ever before. So all I can do is wish you and yours, as well as the rest of us, the very best of Luck. Fair Winds and Happy Anchorages. See you out there. Bob. 👍🙂🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇺🇲

My hubs and I also work full time while living on a boat (about 5 months per year) and I completely relate to everything you said, Sophie. The only difference is that there are still very traditional companies that do not accept remote work, unfortunately...so they don't know. I think it is a lot harder to work and live on a sailboat but there are rewards, of course, which is why we do it. But honestly, I don't think I would want to do it full time. 50/50 is a perfect balance for me.

For many of us, it is a constant battle to balance income with time-off. I have been doing that for a long time now. It is far easier to immerse one-self in either than attempt to do both. The reality is that people need income so it is not a matter of choice for many.

To be honest it sounds like a nightmare. I would want to be able to concentrate 100% on both sailing and work. Doing it this way the one constantly interferes with the other. I would prefer to work in a office during the week and go sailing at weekends or on extended holidays - no mobile phones allowed and no internet (except as required for navigation), definitely no work or even thoughts of work. My main observation after viewing this video is that you obviously are both keeping jobs rather than generating income as KZfaq creators! It appears that while others can support themselves through KZfaq, Patreon etc. you are trying to juggle it in a way that sailing is not your income generator. The downside that I can see from that which you have actually mentioned yourself Sophie, is that you have little time left to run around explore and discover the places you visit, which those other creators use as an income method and do extensively. The enormous upside of your choice of lifestyle is that you can end you’re sailing adventures and go back to work “normally “ while the others are less flexible.

Hi Guys. I was interested in finding information on the portable laptop stand you are using and did not find it in the links you posted. Can you get me info on this item? Thanks... and fair winds.

A great insight. But it applies not just to sailors. But anyone who wants to work with more flexibility. Space is a problem for everyone.

Most of us work on land to meet our expenses and save for retirement with the hope that one day we might buy a sailboat and sail away to some romantic spot. Do you think you both might become burned out on sailing if you didn’t have your work to keep you challenged in other ways? Since you mentioned you have Starlink (not setup yet) I’m sure you’ll give us a review once you have the opportunity. This is a great video for the current status of using Starlink on boats - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rc5pf7FpsNKapXk.html

Great video guys, me and my wife are nearly ready to start our boating adventure, (same boat as yours LOL). Regards work, I have been fortunate in the stock market (Go tesla) and amassed just over 1mil GBP, we have no mortgage, no dept, no kids. If we rent out our house in the UK we could get around 900gbp per month. I'm 49, wifey is 40. In your opinion would this be enough to float away. we want a simple life, no marinas if poss (only for storm conditions) , cold beers and large shots. My Wife watches all your vids and is flip flopping regards starting. If you guys were in our shoes what advise would you give. I do also have sailing experience. Thanks guys.
