Welcome to the EarthtonesGirl Podcast!!
My name is Denise and this is my channel, my space to share my love of knitting, making, and living in my own earthy tone of voice.
Welcome to the Knitting Techniques Series. Your resource for learning more about the "how-to" of knitting. These tutorials are designed to help beginners and experienced knitters learn more about the basics of knitting. I will be covering things from casting on and binding off to increases, decreases, cabling, colorwork and much more. My goal is to replace fear and frustration with knowledge and understanding.

In Today's class we will learn the German Twisted Cast On also known as the Old Norwegian Cast On. It is a variation on the Long Tail Cast On. By adding an extra step or twist while casting on, this method produces a more stretchy edge. This cast on can be applied to socks, mittens, cowls and other accessories/garments.

This is my kind of tutorial! Well-produced, up close, in focus and paced perfectly to follow along. By watching this, I finally discovered why my cast on stitches were always twisted on the needle when I've done this in the past! Mind blown!! You are great at what you do my friend!

Thank you so much for sharing! You're an excellent teacher and I can't wait to try this on my sock project I'll be starting today. So glad I found you! Making socks was the reason I learned to knit over 30 years ago but I've never found comfort in beginning! Now, I have found guidance! Thanks again!

Thank you so much for your library of technique videos. I watched several other videos about Twisted German Cast On, even one in slow motion, and just couldn’t get it. But this one, yours, was just the ticket as always. Don’t know why I even checked anyone else. The twist of your thumb in the final movement made all the difference. I could finally see the movement clearly.

Wonderful Video!! Something to consider: At the end of the steps where you turn your hand a bit to accommodate the drop of the right needle into the loop, you might be able to make a smaller movement by dropping your left thumb towards your ring finger instead. I have found that this movement provides a clearer, less obtrusive opening for the last pass before finishes the stitch and starting the next.

Love this tutorial Denise! Clear, concise, and enjoyable to watch. Saved it to my "Knitting Tutorials" playlist. I use this cast on for all cuff-down socks. Actually, I think I use this cast on for all projects (sweater necklines and...I can't think of what else right now but everything that calls for a long-tail cast on, I use the German Twisted Cast On! I think I've heard it referred to as the Old Norwegian Cast On too??). Thank you for doing what you do!~ Stephanie

I quickly learned this cast-on when I started knitting and I don't even remember how to do a long-tail now. The twisted German/old Norwegian is SO versatile. I am curious to explore new cast-ons and bind-offs though. I've done the alternate cast-on for ribs which looks nice and invisible, and I'm curious about those cast-ons that allow you to create pairs of stitches. I may be a bit of a nerd...

Hi Ginna, there are so many kinds of yarn to choose from and so many yarn dyers or commercial companies. I would start by looking at yarn companies on Instagram. One of my favorites is The Cozy Knitter. Explore, look around at local yarn stores. Half the fun is shopping and learning what you like.
