What I like about the German twisted Cast on is the fact that it is quite stretchy.

I called this one the old Norwegian cast on. Here is how I remember. Under 2 not 1 like the long Tail, then “dive” between the 2. Grab right side yarn same as long tail. Twist hand a bit to pull thru loop on the left. For whatever reason the word dive for that extra step helped me a lot. Great cast on…stretchy and sturdy.

This is my go to cast on. I find it a bit stretchier than long tail, which just is too tight for me. Also very durable for edges that get a lot of wear, like mittens and top down socks.

I TOTALLY agree! The CO method gives you the first knitted row automatically. It looks apparently to be purl on both sides but MAKE NO MISTAKE, there is a difference 😉, so make a few swatches with the first row after CO. Start e.g. with a knit and then CO another swatch with first row after being a purl. Then you'll get a pretty good idea on how brilliant this cast on is.

My grandmother taught me this cast on in 1967. She told me it was more elastic. She also said you knit the first row along with the cast on. This is my preferred cast on, but when knitting things like the eyes of your knitted dolls it adds too much volume in the pupil which effects the look of the eyes. So now always use the regular long tail for your patterns.

I think the German twisted will be a good solution to a conundrum I perceive the regular long tail CO (LTCO)…LTCO makes the stitches present themselves as purls when you start row 1 of the project. German twisted means that you are able to begin your project with the knit row facing you. Thanks for reminding me about this CO!

It reminds me teaching 4 of my friends to knit last year. It was a desaster.😂 one of my friend got angry and called herself idiot. I was so frustrated and told her : It's okay,no worry! All you need to do is practice. No one was born to know doing long tail cast on! Please don't call yourself idiot! It took me a year to learn to knit and I didn't think myself as an idiot. Just relax and have fun playing the yarn! After all I let her did the finishing such as cast off to make her feel a bit accomplished of this project. Then she finally had a smile on her face! LoL

Arne & Carlos, you mentioned during your German Twisted Cast On Tutorial, that you felt that your delivery was a bit chaotic. It was the best tutorial you have ever done! You don’t need the ‘Slow Wheel’ on KZfaq for this tutorial. Arne, you were slow enough with the demonstration, used thick colorful yarn, and the camera angle was perfect. (Thank you Eric!) BUT! When Carlos tried to recreate the cast on, your language prompting him was JUST what someone who is learning this ‘Cast On’ technique would need to hear. AND the camera angle, again, was perfect. I will use this tutorial when ever a German Twisted Cast On is called for! Well done and thank you! 🥰

Thank you for all the tutorial videos you've been doing - I've learned a heap from them, and having an autoimmune condition that makes me a lot more prone to tendinitis learning to knit in the Norwegian way has meant that I could knit without injuring myself. I've been having a lot of fun, and I love the way in which you present your videos. :D I'd love to see you do a series on cast offs. They're currently the main thing I'm struggling with (the edge ends up too tight), so I'd love to see some techniques done in the Norwegian style that can help keep the same/similar level of stretch in the edge as was in the rest of the knitted fabric.
