EASIEST DIY Roof Vent Install ( For Tiny House or Camper Van / RV ) | Fan Tastic Vent:
Step 1:
Make sure you have all of the tools that you need to complete the project before you start. For my vent, I used the Fan-tastic RV roof vent made by Dometic. You will also need 100% waterproof silicone, a drill, drill bits, a marker and a jigsaw or a circular saw.
Step 2:
Decide the placement of your roof vent based on the other things that you intend to occupy your roof with. In my case, I intend to install solar panels toward the back of my roof, so that area is off limits for placement of the fan. It is also important to note that you should not try to place your roof vent fan on any curved or angled surfaces on your roof if you have any. On most of these old vans (like the one that I'm working on in this video), they often times had a slight incline before becoming a flat roof. Installing a fan on the inclined area of your roof may cause your fan to detach when driving at highway speeds, so pick your placement wisely!
Step 3:
Use your template to draw out your cutting surface on top of your roof. If the roof vent that you chose to use does not come with a template, trace the area of the vent that is supposed to be recessed into the living space. It may be a good idea to draw your lines slightly smaller than the opening is intended to be. Its always better to be able to cut more off to make a snug fit later on compared to cutting off too much early on in the process.
Step 4:
Drill holes in your Tiny House, camper van, or RV roof using any drill bit that is larger than your saw blade. This will allow you to place the blade inside of the hole to begin your cut. Drilling a hole in all four corners of your square will make the cutting process a little bit easier.
step 5:
cover the edges of your hole and the edges of your roof vent fan with 100% waterproof silicone or caulking. This will ensure that your roof vent will not leak any water during rainy days after the install is complete. Next place your vent in the hole and drill it into place.
Step 6:
Hook up your fan to your electrical system and you should be finished! Depending of the type of roof vent that you have, You may need to do a few additional steps to cover the opening from the inside of your tiny house or van in order for it to have a finished look.

Looks good. However, you must use BUTYL TAPE to seal the fan in, that silicone is going to start leaking soon. It won’t stand up to the heat of being on an exterior roof. There’s considerable more sealant necessary to keep this from leaking long term. Fantastic Fans tend to be louder than MaxxAir .If you keep the windows cracked open you should be OK with only one vent. Research How To and not just style ideas on KZfaq: Greg Vigor (?) has stellar instructional van build videos also ‘Rolling Earthship’ & ‘Huge Tube’ and of course, ‘CheapRV Living’. I love your videos you’re addressing a lot of concerns. Keep in mind safety when you build, especially fire risk. (Also- eye protection is #1 before you pick up a saw) FIRE RISK: some sheet metal is needed on the bottom side of your stove cover so it the burners don’t contact the bottom of the wooden cover. Can’t wait to see more of your van building. Congratulations!

Yes correct Butyl Tape and Lap Sealant is a must over silicone. Yep im sure man will comment on Maxx Air over Fantastic fans..

Just a small tip dual, but it's up to you, don't forget to silicone the screws you tapped into the outside of the roof, that's where some vent fans starts leaking first, you don't have to put much, just enough to cover the screw👍

Top notch vid, amazing how you summoned the rain to test the fit 😂 Another tip during install is to wipe down the areas you're applying silicone to. Alcohol wipes or a rag soaked in acetone and scrubbing the area clean in general, that always helps me get max silicone adhesion.

You don't want to use silicone sealant on vehicles because it dries out in just a year or so and becomes brittle from road vibrations. You end up with leaks, electrical shorts, and eventually install replacements. Use dicor and butyl tape. It's what the RV industry uses.

Good job on your install! My only suggestion would have been to use dicor sealant instead of the silicone. It may be sealed now but could have leaking issues down the road.

I want to share my review of the Fantastic Vent 3350 because my experience with the fan is anything but fantastic. I bought mine 18 months ago, as friends, who have an older model, said it was very good. However mine makes a lot of noise and pushes so little air that I can barely tell if I have it set to exhaust or blow. If I turn it up to get more airflow it becomes even noiser! The rain sensor closes the vent at night so I can only assume that it senses the night time moisture and closes even though it is NOT raining. My friend's older model seems to push more air than my newer model. I get much better & quieter airflow from my little Sirocco fan and it was only $!60 not over $600. Dometic agreed to replace the fan and the airflow improved a little but it is still very noisy AND the rain sensor closes the fan at really odd times like late afternoon. So we can't use the fan unless we manually open the cover. So in summary, I have found it an appallingly poor performing fan that is just not worth the money.

The roof of this van is fiber glass instead of sheet metal
@stephenyork7318
@stephenyork7318 7 ай бұрын
I really wouldn’t have gone straight onto the roof. I’m organising to have mine professionally installed and I sourced some 3mm thick, 25mm wide rubber to use as a gasket between the roof and vent. The rubber is stuck on the roof with sikaflex and then the vent is attached to the rubber with sikaflex. Then screwed to the roof as well to cinch down the vent to provide compression to form a real water proof seal that will last. You will end up need to resilicon that seal as it wears and it’s going to look so bad. But the I guess, everything about your build looks sooo rough so pff I suppose

There support wood already inside of the fiber glass on both ends of the ceiling so I drilled framing strips into that and attached my ceiling wood to those framing strips. If it didn’t have that wood Already in there I would use strong adhesive

Do you like Fantastic Fan over MaxxAir or was it just because of cost that you chose this? I've been studying both. I prefer MaxxAir due to the rain cover living in San Diego and its rainy winters, but I read a lot of negative reviews regarding customer service and warranty issues on the MaxxAir!! Have you found this to be true?
