This DIY SUV bed has changed our lives. Finally, we can sleep comfortably in our car at trailheads, and wake up refreshed and ready to start our hike before the rest of the crowds hit the trails.
These DIY car camper conversion instructions are for you if you:
-Have zero knowledge of building anything
-Have zero tools and zero interest in buying tools to do this
-Have zero time or patience build a bed. Seriously, who wants to spend hours drawing/mapping out a bed, sawing, cutting, glueing, etc? We just want to be out hiking! This will take you 1 hour or less so you can stop planning and start getting out on those trails!
This DIY SUV bed is probably NOT for you if you:
-Are an expert builder
-Took wood shop in high school
-Have tons of tools or resources to buy tools and want to use said tools to build intricate bed
-Want fancy bells and whistles like cubbies and wine storage and hinges and... we're getting exhausted just thinking about that. Moving on.
Plus, don't miss our easy, cheap DIY mosquito netting! It's awesome to be able to breathe fresh air at night, and not wake up with millions of bug bites. Warning: mosquito netting is not bear repellant.
It's easy, it's cheap, and yeah, it's totally ghetto, but gosh darn this SUV bed is awesome!

Round the corners of the plywood board with rough sandpaper. Wrap the board with an old but large bedsheet (large so that you wrap it like a burrito with several layers, then fold the ends over) The bedsheet will protect the car from the board, and you won't need foam pads or anything.

Yes Joe! We're exactly the same. It doesn't need to be fancy for us -- we just want to be able to install it in 2 minutes before each trip, and then break it down in two minutes once we're back. No muss, no fuss!

Very clever, great ideas! Never thought of something so simple and effective. Love the garage below the bed board! Thanks for a very useful demo. Some tips: 1. Make some holes in that bed board for aeration. In time, the mattress will get moldy. Classic van life problem. Cars have more moisture inside than houses. Using holes at the corners or middle, you could also tie down the board to the car for safety in accidents. 2. Harbor Freight sells cargo nets that could secure items in back so they don't become projectiles in a crash. They also have tie downs for the ammo cans which can be deadly. 3. IKEA has netting very cheap. I would sew those magnets into the netting and try to mount them inside so they are not stolen.

Oh yeah, so creative. This is such a great solution to make the back of the car flat. We do car camping every year... but not in our car. We also use an old memory foam mattress inside our tent. Plus comforter. Plus pillows. It's so cozy when we crawl inside! Love your mosquito solution!

HAHA I love that you guys go full on memory foam inside the tent! That is true glamping in style! Sounds so cozy actually. Adam really struggles with tent camping because of back issues so we often only do it if out backpacking on the trails. Maybe I can talk him into it with our memory foam mattress!

I am car camping so I needed drawers. I took the seats out of my Camry and set up a bed and file drawers in the back. I never get out of my car at night. I scoot over the console and into the back, and climb over the next morning. I also keep a luggable loo in the back for midnight potty breaks, and wash it out at a manual carwash in the morning, when no one's around. I'm all set!

Thanks Nigel, and yes being taller is a real issue. I am very tall as well at 6-6 (or 200 cm if you use metric), but I don't sleep fully stretched out so this works fine for me. @@LiveHardxLoveHard not sure. But next year definitely plan on getting out there and exploring whilst living for days, weeks, maybe months from a vehicle. I live in an apartment and don't have much of an outside lifestyle. But that is not through choice it's more through life and that needs to change. So I've been surfing the web for people much like yourselves to help inspire me in the right direction ... Thanks again :-)

Now that I've seen many of your videos (your interests match a lot of mine), I can definitely say "channel name checks out." You guy crack me up. Always smiling and always positive. I'm sure you hit a few bad days along your journeys, but that never shows in your videos. I especially liked your "Half Dome with Cables Down" video. I've hiked Half Dome many times with the cables up, but never with them down. After seeing your video, I've been practicing my Prusik hitch. And, yes, Elise is definitely a cutie. A keeper personality for sure! I truly enjoy the videos you guys publish here. Good information with a wonderful presentation.

I will definitely let you know how that hike goes later this year. I've got your channel at the top of my subscription list, so I'll be following along this year. I have to figure out how the "Join" and "Thanks" tabs work to help out a little bit. I know it takes a lot of work to create the content that helps all of us. I've never had a FB, Twitter, Instagram account or any of the others (don't need the aggravation), but I have learned so much from YT channels like yours. Thank you for the very informative DIY video. In the engineering world you achieved 2 very important goals. One is, “form follows function”, the other, “kiss”. Great video, inspirational. I'm planning to do some SUV camping this summer (solo unfortunately, my girlfriend isn't much for the outdoors) and this has shown me that I don't need to learn carpentry or permanently modify my rig to do it comfortably. I wonder if milk crates would word as a more cost effective replacement for the ammo cans

That's a great question, Mosey -- I definitely thought about milk crates but they were too high for our needs because we only had a six-inch drop. But with a big enough drop I bet they'd work great as long as they could bear the weight, which I think they could. Love that frugal thinking!!

Way to keep it simple! Also, you can leave the bed in your car all of the time. This way you can use the bed to take a nap in your car at work during lunch. This can be very helpful, since a lunchtime nap gives you extra energy to exercise after work.
