Why Not RV: Episode 137 - The Car Generator. Why does EVERY RVer need one of these? I'll tell you why! This thing seriously answers the question that I see most online... How can I use my CPAP overnight... Or How can I watch TV overnight while Boondocking? The answer is simple, you either spend a significant amount on batteries and inverter setup, do an install yourself or spend a lot of money having someone do it for you.... OR... USE THE CAR GENERATOR!!!! It seriously could not be more of an EASY, DIRECT, SIMPLE answer. Start your car, turn off AC and everything inside the car, Hook up the Car Generator and plug in!!! Cars and Trucks are engineered to support this and idle for 50-70 hours straight without issue.

I double the other comments, I would never idle my new truck all night, big trouble, now when I leave I can be at reduced power for my trip, and leaving my hood open, not even at home in my driveway. Portable generator with about 20 locks on it, and save buying all this mess. They musta gave you this one for a review.

I met the creator at the show and truly feel it will help a lot of RVers. Average camper is towed by 1/2 ton gas trucks and suvs. Diesel’s are for full timers and fifth wheels mainly. Most people with a 20’ camper this helps TREMENDOUSLY

Scroll through any facebook group. You find ALL throughout of people asking how to run there CPAP overnight. Or how to watch TV overnight with no shore power. Or how to make coffee in the morning with no power. This product is the simplest lightest most basic solution. Of course you go through my channel and I have videos showing you how to install an inverter inside your rig, how to upgrade your battery bank, etc… but for the average person, non diy RVer. This is a great solution.

idling a truck all night seems like a bad idea. Seems a Honda 2200 w generator using only a gallon of gas overnight would cost close and have more utility.

Your vehicle idles about the same as a generator will consume. Modern vehicles are designed to be able to idle for 60-80 hours without issue. Think if you were stuck in a blizzard somewhere. Your car can idle and keep you warm and safe.

@@WhyNotRV of course in a life or death situation, I would idle my car as long as I can. But other than that, it is a bad idea. and an expensive one. I can buy a 2500W generator for half the price. Not only would it run a lot quieter than the car engine, it would also be much more efficient and way more portable

Modern diesel vehicles are not designed to idle 60-80 hours, however told you that was misinformed. That dpf system would clog right up..
@WhyNotRV
@WhyNotRV 7 ай бұрын
No, diesels do need to be driven after about 10-12 hours to clear out the dpf
@jimm2442
@jimm2442 7 ай бұрын
Idling a modern diesel can overload the DPF and cause all kinds of trouble. In fact the engines in many will shut off after about 10 minutes unless the transmission is in gear (not in park). What about that?
@WhyNotRV
@WhyNotRV 7 ай бұрын
I can idle my truck for hours on end. Without it shutting off. Modern cars and trucks are designed to idle. Yes a diesel does introduce the problem of clogging up the DPF and needing to take it for a drive to clear it out. You see semi trucks parked overnight and idling all night long correct?
@jimm2442
@jimm2442 7 ай бұрын
The DPF's on semi trucks can be removed and are designed to be cleaned in a machine designed for that purpose. The DPF's (Diesel Particulate Filters) on these diesel pickups are not designed to be manually cleaned. They only clean out soot during regeneration. Long idle times are not recommended by the manufacturer as regeneration (soot burn off) cannot happen at idle. The trucks EGR and DPF systems are not designed for extended idle for more that an hour or so. Overnight idle of your diesel pickup is a bad idea even if the truck does not automatically shut off. Towing a trailer on the highway the next day may clean out the soot from extended idle but that is not always the case. For that company or you to say overnight idle of a 2007 or newer diesel pickup is okay is bad advice and will cause emission system and possibly engine damage.

As for Price, when you consider a comparable generator by itself is pretty similar we priced but more importantly, if you think about the option for let’s just say 1000 W worth of solar panels. This is an incredible deal.

This is such a stupid idea, what happens when you’re asleep with your CPAP machine on and your brand New truck starts to overheat. All it takes is a small leak or a split radiator hose and you’ve lost a $8000 engine.

@@WhyNotRV all mechanical things break, if it happens while you’re asleep, you’re screwed. Doesn’t matter if it’s a new truck or an old truck. Things go wrong if it overheats during the middle of the night you’re going to purchase a new engine.

The design of the weather proof case and its functionality is patented.
@bryan314
@bryan314 7 ай бұрын
@@WhyNotRV patented does not mean useful or even functional. I fail to see how this is better than a harbor freight inverter and a few sheets of plexi for a weather tight enclosure.
@WhyNotRV
@WhyNotRV 7 ай бұрын
For starters, it is a commercial grade inverter, so it’s definitely a higher quality than Harbor freight lol. I’m not saying that a DIY person couldn’t re-create something very similar especially just off of the design, but that’s why he has a patent because now you cannot sell that or re-created for gain.

@@bryan314 you're absolutely right, for the price of this thing you could double up your campers battery capacity and get a 2000 watt continuous run rated inverter. That is what I have done on my camper and it works great. If you're dry camping get out the solar panels to recharge the batteries. Its by far better than having your vehicle run all night
