This video is a complete step by step process of the easiest way to tear down a 2004 CR250 two stroke dirt bike engine. This is a full disassembly of the engine and I do things a little differently with this one by starting with the BOTTOM END first before tackling the top end. After doing it, I believe it is the BEST and EASIEST way to get a dirt bike motor torn apart. Check out the video to find out for yourself! Leave a comment below about what you think about starting with the bottom end first!
ALSO see below for the entire list of tools that I used for the breakdown. Save yourself some time, click the links below, and start using the tools to work on your engines today.

I noticed you measured the clutch steel on a wooden table and gauge went under it. I'm sure it's still within speck. The only thing you have to be conscious of is that the wooden table might have a low spot on the surface that might cause a gauge to slip under the steel. Just something to consider?
@Jack-vh2kn

A good way ive found to take the clutch hub off is put a steel plate back on and hold it with pliers, has worked really well for me so far. Dont need a special tool either. Understand its not the best way if you reuse your plates but it works well.

The 96 has a different power valve set up but shouldn't make pulling the engine apart any different. You're referring to the gasket between the cases, correct?

Thanks for the video. My 02CR250R has MTL oil leaking into the Magneto side of the engine what would cause this? Since discovering the slow leak I've been premixing a bit richer thinking it may cause a lean condition? Can oil also be getting into the crank area burning through the engine?
@GregHitchko
@GregHitchko Жыл бұрын
Hey Scott! Seems to me like you either have a blown crank seal on that side, causing air to get it, making it run lean. Or you could have a leaking clutch actuator arm seal. The clutch actuator is much easier to replace because you don't need to split the cases for it. Where does the MTL wetness seem to be stemming from, can you trace it to the source?
@scottmeyers4178
@scottmeyers4178 Жыл бұрын
@@GregHitchko Bike isn't actually running lean plug looks good I just assumed if there's oil leaking into the flywheel side of the engine it's probably seeping in air while running. From what I can see oil is coming in from behind the flywheel.
@GregHitchko
@GregHitchko Жыл бұрын
@@scottmeyers4178 dang that sounds like the crank seal is shot on that side of the engine. I'd recommend tearing it down and throwing a new seal in there if that is the case before any real damage occurs.

Ok, I’ve got a question for you Greg. Can you remove the right side case without removing the clutch side or ignition side case?? I’ve got a motor I’m doing and found a stripped oil drain bolt. My plan is to remove the right side case and send it to Eric Gorr to get the oil drain hole welded and re-tapped. I’d love to do it with out pulling all the stuff out of the left side case. I’ve always split these by lifting off the ignition side first and have never tried lifting the right side case first. Thank you Greg. You are amazing!!
@GregHitchko
@GregHitchko 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking Cody! Sounds like you've got a project on your hands. I know it is a pain but I would feel better just disassembling the entire engine and rebuilding it from the split cases. Reason being, I feel like there would be weird torque put on the side of the engine that was kept together, potentially throwing things off when you go to put it back together. That is my opinion and what I would do, but I'm sure there have been people tat have done it!
@Yqsw750001
@Yqsw750001 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Greg!! This one has been a nightmare. When I went to bolt on the new Eric Gorr 265cc cylinder, I noticed one of the case bosses for the front most left side cylinder stud was cracked. So I took it all apart, pulled the motor, sent that left case to Eric, put it all back together with new bearings, got the Lectron on and the exhaust, filled it with coolant and right before I went to put trans oil in it I thought I’d better make sure the oil drain bolt had a fresh crush washer. Then I found that problem. Oh well, looks like she’s coming out again. Why don’t people use torque wrenches!!!???? Have a great Sunday Greg!!!!
