You've just confirmed that what I've been doing is correct. I switched to 90 Octane, zero ethanol gas for all of my yard equipment about 20 years ago. I used to use Sta-Bil, but have been using Stihl Moto-Mix as a Winter-storage-and-early-Spring two-cycle fuel for 6+ years and it works great. I think your comment about not letting the carburetor diaphragm dry out makes a lot of sense.

I’m a retired federal natural resource manager; I was also a trained wildland firefighter. As a result, I came to depend on Stihl and the old Husquavarna chainsaws. So now, I buy only Stihl products....and run only “super fuel”. While I like Stihl’s MotoMix, I incur substantial savings with TruFuel. Great video, Sir!

I’ve been running tru fuel for years in everything. Steve, you could have kept that a secret and made money off of any unsuspecting person needing tuneups and carb work, but you didn’t. That to me says a lot about your character. Not only am I a subscriber for that reason, but I’ve learned a ton from your videos. Thanks for all of your knowledge. Cheers!

What I do...I use AvGas...the stuff from the airport, I've been doing it for years. It is 100 octane and it works great...of course you have to add oil, but it only cost about $5.00 a gallon.

I use Stabil Storage in my fuel all year. I store the trimmers full. It's been working for me for years. I use 93 octane pump gas that has ethanol in it. Also I add RxP to my fuel to de-carbonize the engine. The RxP is pretty incredible. So I'm running these two additives at all times. No starting in the winter.

I have a few chainsaws that i use once a year to cut firewood. After i use them i clean them and sharpen the chains and do all the maintenance. The important point is that i extract every drop of fuel and disassemble the carbs. I coat any rubber parts with silicone oil. You can buy a small bottle of stuff called silicone o-ring lubricant made by super lube. Part number 56204. Its a thick oil that doesn't wash off easily when exposed to chemicals like gasoline. This will keep the rubber from becoming dried and stiff. Its tedious but I've been doing this for over ten years and everything works perfectly! I do this on everything that i have from the power washer to the generators and snow blower. In the fall i do maintenance and put things away. Same with spring. Spend the money and buy good quality stuff, then take care of it.

I follow these steps yearly. Add the engineered fuel, usually I use it my last use or two, then store it filled up. I still start it at the first of the month thru the winter for 5 minutes or so. No problems with my two cycles.

@Steve's Small Engine Saloon. Thanks for the tip. I had it down almost. You just filled in the details. LEAVE the MotoMix in my string trimmer but COMPLETELY fill the tank instead of emptying it. I only run MotoMix in my Echo. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

Holy IPA, what a simple and effective idea. It cost a few dollars, but way less then considering the time to mess around with all the other rigmarole. Thank you thank you thank you. My chain saws are going into hibernation soon and this will be a great timesaver. Well worth the bucks. I will add a tad of oil to the container to bring it up to 40:1 ..... My preference. If someone has trouble with the "tad" numbers, I would be glad to help once the IPA wears off snicker snicker. ...OUT!

Hey Steve. I use 91 octane ethanol fuel with Stabil additive ALL THE TIME and never have a problem starting my string trimmer or lawn mower. I also keep my roll of string trimmer line in a bucket of water to keep it pliable during the season. It cuts better and is less brittle.

Steve, I run canned fuel (no ethanol) all summer long and in the carb over the winter, plus I spray some engine fog in the combustion chamber for winter storage.

I’ve been doing this for the past couple years in my Stihl trimmer and chainsaws. I’ve had no problems starting after they’ve sat for 3-6 months at a time. TruFuel is some good stuff in my opinion

My redmax trimmer has had fuel in it since 2003. Keep it full with super and never used any non ethanol fuel. I do start it a few times in the winter. Never had a issue other than change fuel lines. Now I jinxed myself for sure. 🤣🤣🤣

Steve I started storing with can fuel two years ago however as I mentioned it is very expensive. I am fortunate that I can purchase 92 octane non alcohol at the pump which works great through the season.

I watched one of your videos about taking a carb apart and cleaning it. Ended up taking the carb off my generator and getting that running again, and then my friend had a generator in his RV that wouldn't start (it was old), ended up taking that one apart and getting that running again. I use Aviation (100LL) in all my equipment including my 2 stroke racing Go Kart. So lawnmower, trimmer, etc. It is amazing if your local airport will sell you some. Last I purchased in July 2022 it was $230 Litre/CDN.

thank you so much for this tip! You mention 2-cycle engines but I just found out Tru-fuel has a 4-cycle product as well. I just replaced my carburetor on my Craftsman 4 cycle. it really does not even have that many hours on it but admittedly I have not been doing anything to prepare it for storage. to start the off-season off right I figured I better not be so lazy.

In Dallas Texas we don't worry about winterizing. We just cut the grass all year long. Well we may not cut the grass on the third week of January but that's about it. Heck I plant my garden mid February.

My method: I use non-ethanol 91 w/Stihl synthetic in ALL 2 cycle. Sits all winter, 6 primes in spring, starts right up every time !!

Hey Steve another great video. Last year I emptied the old gas, ran the machine dry. Put in "super fuel" ran for a few minutes then emptied it and ran the machine dry again. Re-used the super fuel in the next machine. Alway great watching you do your magic.

Hey Steve great tip. Here's another one. S T A B I L FUEL STABILIZER. I'VE BEEN USING THAT IN MY 30 YEAR OLD MCCULLOUGH WEED TRIMMER AND IT STILL STARTS ON THE FIRST TRY. I used it in a Chevy explorer van with the large 6 cylinder when it sat for 4 years with a full tank of gas that evaporated down to a quarter tank and it started on the first try then drove it to fill it up. Ran fine and the injectors never fouled. Just make sure you add the stable. I put a double dose and ran it half hour before parking it. Museum curators use the stuff in their display engines and vehicles so with a fresh battery they always start and run like new. Later. Ps it's hard to start a weed whipper in -15 below zero temperatures. So I chose the Stabil brand fuel stabilizer instead. Squirt a couple ounces in your tank and run it for ten minutes then put it away. No easier than that! Jpol.

Worked great Steve. Just fired up the Husqvarna in 2 pulls. Been sitting since November.

I have done this for years now along with running them every now and then. Never had a problem and my ryobi is fifteen years old now and works hard all summer. I do not run the engineered fuel during the summer just too expensive. That sthil stuff is thirty dollars a gallon here in my hood.

I had to start using the can fuel because my edger was not running good. Found out the ethanol was messing up the carburetor over the winter. So I started doing this for storing in the winter and no more problems. Nice tip.

Lol. Love the video. I was in the Dollar Store today and all of their VP, SEF Brand cans were $1.25 a can with 5 year shelf life(unopened). I bought 8 cans.

I’ve been using truefuel in my Stihl chainsaw and string trimmer this way for years. Never had an issue with either of them!!

I have been telling my customers this for 3 or 4 years now

A good quality 2 cycle oil is a fuel stabilizer. And I run 50:1 in my Stihl equipment and in late fall the last few tanks through the mower are 50:1. Upper cylinder lube and fuel stability just in time for winter. In the spring, a couple slow pulls to move things around then one to start. Retired a 32 yo Lawnboy using this method. Reliable every year without fail.

This is the way I've storing all my equipment with small engines for years. Have never had an issue with any of them. thumbs up

Steve: All I have done for the last decade or so is empty the tank, purge the carburetor of fuel using the priming bulb and tip that bit of fuel out too then start the machine until it stalls and that's it job done, have never had a problem starting come the spring time. I don't buy the one about diaphragms going brittle without fuel present. If that were true they would be brittle right out of the packet new if left on the shelf a while, never seen that happen have you ?

I use still fuel only and I don’t have any problems with starting coming out of winter.

I tend to recommend using a fuel stabiliser or a two stroke oil with a fuel stabiliser in a low ethanol percentage fuel in the UK or start looking into using the ethanol free fuels. The pump fuel in the UK will be changing in 2021 to the grade you are currently using so we will be seeing more fuel issues on a daily basis.

Thanks for this info. As a homeowner that barely uses his equipment all I use is the canned fuel in my echo CS 590 chainsaw and Stihl blower. Glad to know that it is saving my equipment, as I've been hesitant in the past to buy any gas powered equipment because of this. Every time I go to use them they have fuel-related issues

Thanks for sharing this. I had to change 2 carbs this past spring on a 40:1 and a 50:1 machine from not doing. This is too easy to do and to avoid changing or worse rebuilding carbs. Like you said... NO BRAINER!

I must be the only one in the World that never has a problem starting my equipment in the Spring. The only fuel I use is 93 octane with Stihl oil mix. I have a 1992 model Stihl string trimmer and I've replaced the carb once and that's all I've done. All my other 2 strokes run on the same mix with the same results. No I don't work for Stihl!

Hey Steve what about using super fuel to store a John Deere rider mower? Or do you have another way of winterizing the gas in a rider mower?

I don't want to contradict you because you really know your stuff, but I think that can of fuel is going to ruin my battery powered weed eater by the time spring rolls around..

Last year I started running my trimmer, chain saw and blower on the good stuff. I don't use them much so figured it was worth it, a bonus is these high revving really seem to love this stuff. I run a half tank through the mower on the last cut of the year too.

Yes , Man i love the fogging oil , I heard about it , it doe's save your lawn equipment from rust , and corrosion plus it also has a special lubricating propertie's in it for long time storage thank's man to the Maker's of fogging oil . Thumb's up👍

Hi Folks, It's about the same with all engines that we put away for the winter. I worked on boat motors and if we ran them like we do our cars, we seldom would have problems with them.

If you have a Pilot friend have him get some avgas at the airport guaranteed good for 3 years. It will actually last years longer.

That sounds like how I used to winterize my motorcycle using the gas stabilizer. GREAT tip! Steve, if I may, I'd like to say thanks on your video about restoring old bearings. (6203-2RS). I have a small collection of pulleys (3) that the bearings are frozen. I WAS going to order & replace them. I saw your video, and I thought, GEE, I used to clean and re-pack my car's front wheel bearings. THIS IS GREAT! Now I'm ahead by 3 pulleys and it only cost me a can of brake cleaner and a can of the air- duster.. THANKS!!!!!!!

Steve thats a great idea . Im not saying im correct but i put stabilizer in the can before I get gas I also use Stihl Premium 2 stroke oil that has the stabilizer in it . My stihl is 15 years old never had a problem yet .Leaf blower is 12 . Nether tool has had to be worked on . Cheers great vid and great idea

I totally agree, ‘super’ fuel (alkylate fuel) is the way to go with any small engine that you’re not gonna run all winter, or any engine that you only use rarely on jobs any time of year. Keep your fuel system brim full with this stuff and it’ll always start first time when you dust the cobwebs off it. Alternatively as long as any engine is fired up and used roughly once a month as you say, then it should be fine anyway. Like all of us a little exercise keeps things going! Thanks again Steve, I really appreciate your honesty in showing and sharing how our much loved and used machines can be run virtually indefinitely with a little care and attention. I come across this warning often and it gives helpful insight on storage: Contents under pressure. Do not use near heat or open flame. Do not puncture, trash compact, or incinerate. Do not store at temperatures above 120 F. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Do not ingest. Use only a in well ventilated area. Use only as directed. Keep out of reach of children. Therefore I shall store a weed trimmer in the same manner I would with anything that has this warning and I am so thankful the directions make it clear that I shouldn't eat it. Now I know how wrong I was for all those times I wanted to eat my weed trimmer. It would never start come spring time if I did that.

Since 1998 I have been using the stihl brand 2 cycle oil along with 91 octane ethanol free fuel with a 45:1 mix ratio, I empty out the fuel tank and run the engine until it stops before storing for the winter. The unit is a Stihl BG75 blower, all original, made in USA, starts in 2-3 pulls every time. Love your channel, thank you for your tips and for saving me money!!!

I use only high test non ethanol fuel forl my sthil weedeater. In winter I add a bit of stabil and this has worked for 4 years without any issues. Much cheaper than super fuel, but I see the value of this type of product if one is using cheapo alchohol laden pump gas. Good video..thanks

I’ve been doing this in my chain saw and pole saw because I don’t use them very often. It works great!!

I have always started every small engine I own every month of the year. I have suggested it to others that have had problems once the problem has been resolved. I often wonder how many follow through with it. This is without a doubt the best advice you have ever given. This, along with keeping ethanol out of a small engine, will keep your engines humming along year after year, season after season.

Put Tru Fuel in my Husqvarna weed eater and leaf blower for a year. let them sit 2 weeks and both wouldn't start. changed spark plugs in both, changed fuel to husqvarnas mix, and they occasionally start and only run on full choke. Also Just bought a Stihl Weed eater and leaf blower from my John Deere Dealership. happy now.
