I recently moved houses and had to store my tools in a storage unit while waiting to close. When I removed my table saw and band saw from the storage unit I saw nothing but RUST! This video will show how I removed the rust and brought my table saw cast iron back to life.

Good job. Thanks. There are a lot of "rusty table saw" videos out there. You did a helpful overview for folks like me who need to catch up on maintenance and reduce friction for good clean cuts.

I run into rust as soon as the summer months roll around. That humidity wreaks havoc on cast iron! I figured that others probably have the same issue and my method works great so why not share. It’s amazing how old, rusty cast iron tables and be refinished for look brand new! Thanks for watching and don’t forget to subscribe. 👍

Nice video. Looks like you need to do the same thing to your band saw top too. Love it BTW. I have an el cheap o Taiwan band saw that I bought cheap. Put new tires on the wheels and it is serviceable but that's all. Thank you for the video. I appreciate it.

New subscriber here. I was sold with the Saw Stop sticker. That is hilarious! I have a Saw Stop fund going myself. Amazing job you did with removing that rust. Very nice technique. One thing that has always amazed me with people selling table saws on places like Craigslist or Offer Up or other sites, is they don't take the time to remove the rust and dirt and junk collecting on the table saws. I mean if they took a little time fixing them up they would probably get a better price for them.
@ShorePointCreations

I couldn't agree with you more!!! Taking an hour out of your day to remove the rust could potentially get you another $100 on the sale of an older saw. I would gladly take $100 for an hour of my time. It also makes potential buyers want your saw over the other rusty saws on those sites. Thanks for subscribing and I am going to be releasing new videos soon. Also I'm getting close to 3,000 subscribers and will be giving away the sharpener I demoed in one of my videos. It's a complete bundle with diamond stones and more. Keep an eye out for that!

vinegar with a little bit of dish detergent and a stainless steel pot scrubber works for me. won't rust if you wipe it dry right away because of the residual vinegar.

Thank you. Do you recommend going through the progression when busting the rust or can you go straight to the WD40 and sand paper option? Your "after" picture was remarkable. What do you recommend in terms of maintenance w/ the Bostik? Also, I've seen some videos recommend paste wax for the preservation / lubrication phase. What's your take? Thanks again!
@ShorePointCreations
@ShorePointCreations 4 жыл бұрын
If your rust is really bad or you want to save on time, you could go right to the sandpaper. I have done it in the past when I knew a scotch brite pad just wasn’t going to cut it. For preservation, I have switched to a carnauba wax that is for cars. I put it on using a random orbit buffer to work it in and then with a polish pad I take it off with the buffer. Leaves an AMAZING shine to your cast iron, makes it ice slippery, and prevents future water penetration. I apply a new coat of wax every month to keep up with the protection. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and the great comment. Good luck with yours! It should come out great!

Cool video, I just got a new used tablesaw and bandsaw. I need to clean them up the same. I really like using turtle paste wax on my vehicles, I'm wondering how that would be on the tool tops. I might give it a try.
@ShorePointCreations

Just make sure it doesn’t have anything in it that would leave a residue. That could transfer to your workpieces whenever you cut them and impact your finish. I have used straight carnuba wax before and it works great.

This is going to sound odd but I have had the best luck and fastest results using a wide sharp chisel as the first step. A razor blade works really well too. Dry, no lubricant or liquids. I’ve found that sandpaper, scotchbright pads and especially steel wool takes a very long time and a lot of work especially with a lubricant. The above (minus the lubricant) works excellent after the scraping process but not before. Try it out sometime, you’ll be delighted with the results. So my method is scrape first. Then scotchbright. Then fine steel wool. clean and degrees with naphtha or denatured alcohol. Then paste wax the top, fence, any sliding mating surfaces and sweet Suzy she’s ready to perform!

I typically will start with 220 and move down as needed. Just make sure you use WD40 or whatever you want when you wet sand it. Dry sanding just doesn’t give the same result. Good luck with it! I’m sure you will like the result. Have a good one!!

One of the best things I did was to add air conditioning / dehumidifier to my shop. Has saved the cast iron surfaces unbelievably. Before you replace the top I would give this method a try. You could go down on your sandpaper in grit to maybe 120 or even 80 if that bad. What do you have to lose? The method works and makes them look brand new. Good luck with it!!! Btw that’s a good screen name. Springsteen all the way....of course I’m near the Springsteen epicenter here in NJ so just have to be a fan.

A cleaning will do wonders - I just restored a 30 year old craftsman with cast iron wings and it's perfect. A few stains here and there, but it's just character and doesn't affect function. A tip I have is carefully use a razor to scrape off the worst of the rust before or during cleaning. Worst case if your table isn't flat at all anymore, you can get it machined.

You can use water as a lubricant so long as you use a liquid to drive off the water. I'm in your camp as it seems pointless when wd-40 makes an extremely effective lubricant for this job
