Third Cast Lucky - salmon fishing with Andrew McGall

When we approach a pool it is always worth having a few casts at the top or head of the pool. Water here is often more oxygenated and attracts resident fish, but it also makes running fish to slow or even pause as they navigate their way on up river. It is therefore somewhere I will at least have a few casts as I work my way down the pool. I have also included a NEW 'Behind the scenes' section at the end, which hopefully you will find useful and be something you can put into practice in your own fishing.

@@AndrewMcGall Cheers Andrew. Not my rods and I wasn't even involved in the design process this time. I was just asked to try them out and to my surprise they are stunning casting tools. All the best !!

Hi Andrew, great video I have now subscribed. Starting salmon fishing in the new season on a similar sized river in Co. Meath. What length rod and line type / weight is are you using?

Thanks Brendan 🙏 and good to hear you’ve started salmon fishing and tight lines for the new season! 🎣😄👍. In the video I’m using a light switch rod (5# double hand rated) and using an integrated spey line which allows you to do a mix of single hand and double hand casts, so good versatility to fish a variety of pools, hope this helps 👍

Hi James - its Tag: red fluro floss tag Tail: magenta bucktail, pink fluro fibre with magenta shadow fox over (shorter) Body: Mirage opal flat mylar (over red tying thread) with silver wire rib (for added strength) Wing: Magenta arctic fox with roofed Jungle Cock eyes Front hackles: magenta cock hackle with dyed red badger hackle over Head: pink tying thread/floss hope this helps and happy tying! thanks Andrew

In the ‘heat of the battle’ the neatness of the loading is secondary, as long as it’s free moving and tangle free when the fish runs is my priority 🎣😊
