Hashima (Battleship Island)
Hashima, located about 5km north of Nomozaki in Nagasaki Prefecture, is a small island with a circumference of 1.2km and an area of 0.06km2. About 5,300 people once lived on this island, making it the most densely populated island in Japan.
In 1810, an outcrop of coal was discovered on this island, which had been nothing more than a reef. The area of the island was expanded by 2.3 times while reclaiming land around it, and it developed into one of the leading coal mines in Japan. In the 83 years until the mine was closed, more than 15 million tons of coal were produced. In order to make effective use of the limited land, facilities necessary for life such as high-rise miner's housing, schools, government offices, hospitals, shopping stores, and movie theaters were built three-dimensionally. In 1959, the population density was recorded as the highest in Japan. However, coal output decreased from the 1960s, and coal that could be mined safely was exhausted, so the mine was closed in January 1974, and three months later it became unmanned.
Nearly 50 high-rise buildings remain, including the oldest existing reinforced concrete building in Japan, a group of seven to nine-story apartment buildings built in 1915 to 1915, and was declared a World Cultural Heritage site in 2015 as a modernization industrial heritage site. registered with.
Takashima
An island located about 14.5 km southwest of the center of Nagasaki City. Originally, there were four islands, Takashima, Kamifutagojima, Shimofutagojima, and Tobishima, but they were reclaimed with waste stones and became one island. In the 16th year of Tensho (1588), it became the domain of the Nabeshima family, and in 1623 (Genna 9), Takashima Shrine was built by order of Katsushige Nabeshima, the lord of the Saga domain. In 1642, the Tomibansho was established by the Saga clan to monitor the entry and exit of foreign ships.
Coal was discovered in 1695 (8th year of Genroku), and settlement began in 1751 (1751). The Saga Domain, which had been mining coal as fuel for salt production, began mining directly from 1817 (Bunka 14). After two years of maintenance, the domain and British trader Thomas B. Glover jointly opened a Western-style shaft, and full-scale coal mine development began. In 2014, it was sold to Yataro Iwasaki and managed by Mitsubishi, and since then it has developed as an island of coal mines, becoming the ``Birthplace of Mitsubishi''. In 1968, the population was 18,019, but in 1986, the coal mine closed, and the local community changed dramatically. Most of the coal mining facilities such as the shafts and dozens of coal mining apartment buildings have also been removed. After the closure of the mine, development of a beach and fishing park was recommended as a promotional area for fisheries and tourism that made use of the characteristics of the island.
